Chloe first met Liam shortly after she and her mother arrived to their new house and she found some gnomes at the attic, which slightly creeped her out and made her to put them out of her house with some "Free" signs, which was seen by Liam, who greeted his new neighbor in a friendly way, which surprised her and she soon entered her house without saying a word, even after he asked her if he could take one of the gnomes.
That night, Chloe's mother asked her about the boy she saw earlier and commented he seemed nice, which Chloe denied with a smile.
The next day, at school, Chloe was approached by Liam in the gym who complimented her in her new green crystal necklace and then commented that Chloe didn't talk too much, while Chloe replied that he does, which he confirmed and then thanked her for the gnome and she replied he was welcome and that he could take all of them if he wants, and the two introduced themselves before Liam asked her if he wants to hang out with him after school.
However, their talk soon was interrupted by the arrival of the popular girls, led by Brittany, to which Liam told Chloe who they were and advised her against trying to befriend them but she ignored him.
The next day, Chloe discovered to her shock that the gnomes she saw earlier were alive and protecting her house from the troggs, ravenous eating creatures and that her necklace who she gave to Brittany as a sign of friendship is actually a keystone to close the portal from which the troggs arrived to the house. And she was soon visited by Liam, who asked her if they could go to school together, to which she lied she was slightly sick and also (at the gnomes' insistence) asked him to return the gnome he took earlier to her, which he was willing to do as his grandmother has become scared of it.
Soon after, he returned the gnome (which was named Charlie) and became suspicious after hearing some noises from the house, and despite Chloe trying to convince it was nothing, he peeked from the window and noticed the troggs and the gnomes stopping them, which freaked Liam out and he soon entered to the house demanding to know what is going on.
Chloe proceeded to tell him the truth about the gnomes, which made Liam to burst out laughing in disbelief until Chloe asked the gnomes to show themselves, which convinced Liam and made him to try to run outside in shock, but he was stooped and tied up by the gnomes, who told Chloe that they'll only release her boyfriend if she brings the keystone back to them, which she agrees to do, before clarifyng Liam wasn't her boyfriend.
However, after failing to get the necklace back from Brittany, Chloe returned home to find Liam there untied, who has agreed to help the gnomes to neutralize the troggs, and when Chloe tells them she didn't get the necklace, the frustrated gnomes revealed to her and Liam their secret room, where they explained their war with the troggs and that they need the stone to prevent them from entering and destroying the world.
Soon after this, Chloe and Liam trained and managed to neutralize several troggs, to which one of the gnomes commented that they look like good friends, which Chloe denied saying they're not yet.
When Chloe prepared herself to go at the school dance, Liam wanted to go with her, which she declined as the popular girls didn't like him, and he replied he thought she could use a friend, as the popular girls didn't know to be real friends, he never had any friends and believed that neither did she, to which Chloe confirmed that she didn't because her mother and her moved away too often and she wanted to fit in with the popular girls, to which a sympathetic Liam said that he didn't know that.
At the school dance, Liam follows Chloe at the gnomes' suggestion to remind her of her task of retrieving the necklace as she was a little more focused in the popular girls and in flirting wirh Brittany's ex-boyfriend, much to Liam's jealousy.
After this, Liam demanded Brittany to return Chloe's necklace to her, which made Brittany to assume that Chloe wanted it back so badly because Liam was her boyfriend and gave it to her, which Chloe quickly refuted and said "eww", which hurted Liam and he soon found himself tripped by Brittany's friends who quickly humilliated him by taking a photo and posting it on the social media, which left Chloe with a regretful expression.
At Chloe's house, Liam told the gnomes over the failure in getting the necklace but he was soon attacked and dragged into a portal by the troggs, leaving only his glasses behind.
Back at the dance, Chloe reads a message sent to her by Liam, saying there was only one person he wanted to stop the troggs with and that's her amd that he considers her his friend, which made Chloe to realize Liam is her real friend and to snap at Brittany for insulting Liam and throwing her necklace away, saying she doesn't want to be friends with someone like her, that Liam is her friend and threatens to punch Brittany if she ever calls him a loser again, before storming out.
When arriving home, Chloe learns of Liam's capture and, blaming herself for it, she decides to enter the Troggs' world herself to rescue him, Once there, she soon finds him trapped and still upset for her rejection, to which she apologizes for hurting him, saying she was so fixiated into making new friends that she didn't realize she already had him and the gnomes as friends, which makes Liam to tearfully accept her apology before she returns his glasses to him, and they look at each other for a moment before finding the original gnome leader trapped at the world and together they use Chloe's phone battery and the crystals there to destroy the troggs for good before returning to their own world.
However, the mega trogg manages to survive the explosion and cross over as well and also are confronted by Brittany and her friends wh arrived to humilliate Chloe at her own house and taunt her with her necklace, before being interrupted by the mega trogg who captures Brittany, which leads Chloe, Liam and the gnomes to save her by making the mega trogg to swallow Brittany's phone with the crystal necklace she's wearing, destroying the monster for good.
At the next morning, Chloe wakes up and goes to school with Liam happily accompanying her where she confides in him her decision to dye her pink hair into another color which makes feel her more like herself like blonde or brown.
