Cleo x K.C. is the het ship between Cleo Diller and K.C. Young from the Clifford the Big Red Dog fandom.

Canon[]

Cleo and KC first meet in KC's debut episode, "A New Friend", where K.C. visits Birdwell Island on vacation with his owner. The two first exchange greetings through the fence around the house where K.C. is staying, and it is only when K.C. emerges through the gate to the yard that Cleo discovers that K.C. is missing one of his back legs. Having never encountered a dog with only three legs before, Cleo is unnerved and even comes to fear that K.C. may have some sort of contagious disease that caused him to lose his leg. As a result, she becomes nervous about being around K.C. or even touching a ball he's had in his mouth.

Eventually, K.C. confronts Cleo and her friends good-naturedly about how they've been treating him since finding out he's missing a leg. Though upbeat, he does take on a somewhat hurt tone as he addresses the way Cleo has been acting around him. Upon hearing that K.C. is just hoping to make some new friends and doesn't have any sort of contagious condition, Cleo happily agrees to be his friend. She also laughs when K.C. makes a joke, and she happily accompanies him up to sea Birdwell Island's lighthouse.

In "Two's Company", Cleo is excited to recognize a truck belonging to K.C.'s owner Bruno, and she and her friends quickly go to investigate whether K.C. is with him. This proves to be the case, and K.C. and his friends happily greet each other with K.C. and Cleo engaging in a rather elaborate greeting. Cleo is disappointed to learn that K.C. is only going to be on Birdwell Island for a couple of days, and so she insists that he play with her throughout his visit, even bumping T-Bone aside as she makes this point. K.C. acts as though he might have other plans, to Cleo's dismay, but then reveals that he's only joking and would be happy to spend time with her.

K.C., Cleo, and their other friends are soon engaged in a game of ball, but Cleo's enthusiasm for spending time with K.C. causes her to cut Clifford and T-Bone out of the game. She later compliments K.C.'s performance of an impressive trick, but she then distracts him with one of her own and asking about it so that K.C. fails to see T-Bone performing the trick himself. Cleo breaks up the awkward moment by suggesting they go see about getting snacks from her owner, which a hungry K.C. eagerly agrees to. Unfortunately, Cleo is so eager to literally cater to K.C. that she rejects Clifford's desire to try out the trick.

Later, when it's time for K.C. to go home for the day, Cleo double checks that they'll see K.C. again the next day. The group makes plans to meet up, but after K.C. departs Cleo seems interested only in spending time with K.C. the following day. When Clifford points this out, Cleo somewhat callously dismisses the idea of him and T-Bone being present since "K.C. is special." She then leaves her friends to go say another goodbye to K.C., much to the disappointment of her two best friends.

The next day, Cleo intercepts K.C. at his owner's workplace instead of meeting him at the library with Clifford and T-Bone as they had agreed the day before. K.C. exchanges a paw slap with her but questions her presence, and Cleo suggests that she and K.C. go to the lighthouse together before going to meet up with Clifford and T-Bone. As the two are trekking, Cleo asks K.C. to let her know if she needs to slow down for him only to notice that he's disappeared from behind her. K.C. then surprises her by jumping out of a bush and proposing a race to the lighthouse, proving that Cleo has no need to worry about him not keeping up.

After an enjoyable race to the lighthouse, Cleo expresses her happiness at K.C.'s presence, and K.C. notes that he enjoys spending time with Cleo as well. However, he points out that he likes playing with Clifford and T-Bone as well, and he leads Cleo to meet the pair at the library as planned. Finding Clifford and T-Bone gone, they set out to look for them, but K.C. disapproves when Cleo suggests that the two of them could continue playing by themselves and she can update Clifford and T-Bone later. K.C. then points out that Cleo isn't being particularly nice in the way she's treating her best friends, which Cleo attempts to defend by saying how she wants to spend time with K.C. since he's not around as often.

In response, K.C. asks Cleo how she would feel if Clifford and T-Bone were to do what she's been doing, and Cleo becomes indignant at the thought. When K.C. tactfully notes that she could very well lose her friends if she keeps up such behavior, Cleo becomes sober, and upon seeing Clifford and T-Bone apologizes to them for her behavior of the past couple days. She then shares the lesson K.C. has taught her with her friends, and after giving them a moment K.C. calls an end to what he jokingly dubs "mushy stuff" to suggest that they all carry out their plans for the day: going to a street fair.

In "Hooray for Cleo", K.C.-who is visiting the island for summer vacation-is thrilled to hear about a recent shot Cleo made to win a game of beach ball. He and several other dog friends of Cleo voice the opinion that she should teach a clinic due to her skill, and despite knowing that she actually didn't win the game Cleo gives in to their request. When Cleo accidentally rolls into the surf during the class, K.C. expresses concern, but Cleo brushes it off. Eventually, Cleo confesses the truth, and K.C. and the others forgive her despite some initial disappointment at her behavior.

In "Cleo's Valentine Surprise", K.C. stumbles upon Cleo as she’s in the midst of preparing a Valentine’s Day surprise for her friends. Hearing but not initially recognizing his voice, Cleo hides in a barrel, but K.C. recognizes her voice and calls out to her by name. This allows Cleo to recognize K.C.’s voice, and the pair are visibly delighted to see each other. After K.C. explains his presence on the island, K.C. learns that Cleo has secreted treats and bows around the island that she intends to assemble into a gift for Clifford and T-Bone.

K.C. eagerly offers to assist Cleo in her project, despite being somewhat perturbed by her secretive approach. He is further baffled by Cleo’s sheer amount of bows in one of her caches. Spotting a frog nearby, K.C. has a little fun by warning Cleo of an intruder. Cleo takes the joke in good stride, laying a friendly paw on K.C. as she congratulates him on the trick.

Cleo later asks K.C. to retrieve several of her treats from beneath a dumpster while she distracts some garbage men for fear they’ll find the stash. The pair then assemble Cleo’s collection into a large heart shape on the beach near the island’s ferry dock. K.C. compliments Cleo on her endeavor, but appears concerned at Cleo’s prediction that her friends have a similar gift planned for her. When Clifford and T-Bone arrive, Cleo and K.C. hide, and Cleo then makes a show of revealing K.C.’s presence to her other two friends.

After Cleo discovers that Clifford and T-Bone don't have a surprise for her in return, Cleo privately complains to K.C. He then points out that Cleo has mentioned how she loves doing things for her friends, and how much pleasure it’s brought Clifford and T-Bone. He then asserts that the holiday has been a good one, and Cleo takes his point to heart about the gift being its own reward. The two then join Clifford and T-Bone in enjoying their surprise.

In "Not Now, I'm Busy", Cleo and her friends are thrilled to see K.C. arriving on Birdwell Island on the ferry, and K.C. and Cleo share their usual greeting. However, to their surprise and disappointment, K.C. declines their invitation to play based on being busy, which makes Cleo particularly despondent. Later, during a game of red light, green light with Clifford and T-Bone, Cleo spots K.C. sitting in front of a store and tries to invite him to play again, being particularly impressed by a vest he's wearing. K.C. declines yet again, explaining that he's currently got a job that he has to do.

While Clifford and T-Bone muse that K.C. might have become a superhero, Cleo is skeptical of this suggestion and decides that they should observe K.C. to find out exactly what his new job entails. She also insists that they make sure K.C. isn't aware of their surveillance, and she and her friends follow K.C. around the island. Despite seeing K.C. in the company of his owner Bruno's mother, Cleo comes to the conclusion that K.C. isn't interested in them anymore and is simply making excuses not to spend time with them. When Clifford and T-Bone again propose that K.C.'s vest might be some kind of superhero uniform, Cleo is scathing of the idea.

Clifford decides that the best approach to find out the truth is to speak to K.C. directly, which Cleo agrees to unenthusiastically. When they arrive at Bruno's mother's house, K.C. is excited to see his friends and goes to greet them, only for Cleo to turn away when he attempts to initiate their usual ritual of saying hello. K.C., perturbed, tries to speak to her, but Cleo is initially silent and then claims that perhaps she's "busy." Realizing why Cleo's upset, K.C. apologizes for not being able to spend time with her earlier and denies her accusation that he no longer likes her, Clifford, or T-Bone.

As K.C. explains, he's recently been trained as an assistance dog for Bruno's mother, Mrs. Young, since she lives alone on Birdwell Island and is getting old. Cleo and the others then watch, interested, astonished, and then delighted as K.C. performs a task for Mrs. Young, and Cleo admits to having been wrong about K.C.'s job. K.C. notes that his new job means he'll be on Birdwell Island more frequently, meaning that the friends will have more opportunities to play when K.C. isn't on duty.

In "Doggie Detectives", K.C. goes to join Cleo and his other friends at play, and Cleo reacts happily upon seeing him. Upon learning from the group that a merry-go-round from a park has gone missing, K.C. references Detective Mike, his favorite mystery character. Cleo questions him about it, and K.C. explains before showing his friends a copy of one of the books. Cleo and the others join K.C. in trying to put Detective Mike's methods to work to solve the mystery of where the merry-go-round has gone.

K.C. suggests a stakeout-which leads to an exasperating misunderstanding about steak-and then directs Cleo and the others to various hiding places to observe the former site of the merry-go-round. After hearing a boy comment on the merry-go-round being taken, Cleo reports on the matter to K.C. and the others. She also responds enthusiastically when K.C. suggests tailing the boy, though there is initially another misunderstanding over the reference to tails. Later, Cleo asks K.C. to define investigating, but she responds enthusiastically to his instruction. Eventually, the friends succeed in learning what's going on with the merry-go-round and other playground equipment.

In "Doghouse Rock", K.C. is among the animals who form the audience for Cleo’s band, the Packstreet Dogs.

Fanon[]

Clifford the Big Red Dog doesn't enjoy the greatest online presence as a fandom, being a book and several animated series aimed primarily at young children. As such, not much fan material exists for Cleo and K.C. as a pairing.
