Cleosar is the het ship between Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar, a historical affair reflected in multiple fandoms, including Asterix and Obelix and Fate.

Canon[]

Cleopatra was the last queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, an empire that ruled over Egypt, as well as northern island nations. She first became acquainted with Caesar when one of his rivals, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey) fled to Egypt after losing his last battle against Caesar. Despite being allied with Cleopatra's father, Ptolemy XII, her brother Ptolemy XIII had Pompey killed as soon as he had heard of his arrival. This gave Caesar time to conquer Alexandria.

Around 48 BCE, legend says that Cleopatra first met Caesar while wrapping herself in a carpet and urging him for help against her evil brother. Cleopatra was always reported to be very beautiful, with her supposedly being 21 at the time while Caesar was 52. Caesar was a very powerful man, yet, Cleopatra captivated him. He might've been impressed with her tactics and skill to successfully avoid detection of the officials, then having the first thing come out of her mouth being her plea for Caesar to help her must've amused him. Cleopatra's wealth also helped, as Caesar was actually notoriously in debt despite his status.

So Cleopatra and Caesar had an affair, contrary to popular belief, they never actually got married. Caesar supposedly attempted to negotiate a reconciliation between Cleopatra and her brother, but Ptolemy and his advisor Potheinos noticed that he favored Cleopatra's side, thus leading to Ptolemy's forces sieging Caesar's Alexandria. However, Ptolemy dies in the Battle of the Nile, having tried to retreat from battle and drowned, Cleopatra's half-sister Arsinoe IV was exiled when Cleopatra and Caesar found out that she had a hand in the siege. Before leaving Egypt, Caesar used his power to declare Cleopatra and her younger brother Ptolemy XIV as rulers.

About a year later, Cleopatra's affairs with Caesar led to her giving birth to his son, Ptolemy Caesar, whom she called Caesarion, the last Pharaoh of Egypt. A year after that, Cleopatra regularly travelled to Rome as Caesar's client and was welcomed as his guest at his villa along with Ptolemy XIV.

However, in the year of 44 BCE Caesar was declared a dictator and made himself more and more enemies, even amongst his own circles, leading to his assassination. Shortly after, Cleopatra ordered for her brother Ptolemy XIV to be poisoned so that Caesarion would become sole ruler of Rome. However, Caesar's grandnephew Octavian claimed birthright on the throne, with Cleopatra once again having an affair with Marcus Antonius, Marc Antony. Marc Antony divorcing Octavia Minor (Octavian's sister) to be with Cleopatra solidified Octavian's already existing distrust in Cleopatra and he tried to ruin her and eventually declared war on her. When Octavian defeated Marc Antony upon arriving in Egypt, Cleopatra hears that she was to be publicly executed by Octavian as a demonstration of his triumph. This eventually lead to Cleopatra willingly drinking from a poisoned cup in the privacy of her own home.
