Clifford & Mother is the family ship between Clifford and Clifford's Mother from the Clifford the Big Red Dog fandom.

Canon

Clifford's mother appears in the book Clifford's Family, in which Clifford and Emily Elizabeth go to visit Clifford's relatives. She is the first of the family that the pair meet, and according to Emily Elizabeth Clifford's mother hardly recognizes him at first. Despite this, and Clifford's impressive size, Clifford's mother demonstrates a forceful attitude with her son, treating him as though he were still a small puppy. This includes making Clifford peel back his lips so she can examine his teeth and having him lower his head to her level so she can look in his ears.

Clifford's mother also makes an appearance in the Clifford the Big Red Dog animated series, specifically in the episode "Little Clifford." Emily Elizabeth goes to visit Clifford's mother after hearing that she's had puppies. As Emily Elizabeth is greeting Clifford's siblings, Clifford-the runt of the litter-is seen hiding behind his mother. However, upon being greeted kindly by Emily Elizabeth, Clifford emerges from behind his mother to see her as well. Clifford's mother is not seen again afterwards. However, she and Clifford share a number of notable design elements, including eyes with visible whites as opposed to the simple black dots seen on most dogs in the series.

Fanon

Unsurprisingly, Clifford's mother appears in very little fan made material, as she is an extremely minor character within the franchise. The book and animated series Clifford's Puppy Days don't even feature her making an appearance. The former even has her seemingly absent when Clifford first encounters Emily Elizabeth. Clifford's mother is also almost entirely absent from the two Clifford the Big Red Dog animated series, with the exception of her appearance in "Little Clifford." This appearance amounts to little more than a silent cameo.

As is typical of many real-world dogs, Clifford left his birth family to be with new owners once he was old enough. Had it not been for the whims of Clifford creator Norman Bridwell, Clifford's mother might well never have appeared in the books at all. Naturally, Emily Elizabeth's relationship with Clifford takes precedence over that between Clifford and any of his relatives. It is, after all, Emily's love for Clifford that causes him to grow to gigantic size, as opposed to any that he received from his mother or other biological family members. Despite this, Clifford and his mother do seem genuinely affectionate in the few appearances she has made in the franchise.
