The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)[]
Clopin and Phoebus come from two different worlds. Clopin is the "King of the Gypsies", born in poverty and forced to perform to keep food on the table. Phoebus, on the other hand, is the head of Paris' military and it is implied that he comes from a more uppercrust background. Phoebus attends the Feast of Fools, hosted by Clopin, but the two do not directly interact with each other.
They officially meet in the catacombs under the city, when Phoebus and Quasimodo seek out the Court of Miracles. Clopin and the other Roma stop them, and assume they are spies sent by Frollo. Clopin prepares to hang them, but is interrupted by Esmeralda. She tells Clopin that Phoebus had earlier saved the Miller's family, which seems to change Clopin's opinion on him. Clopin then asks why they didn't say anything, to which Phoebus and Quasimodo replied that they did; Clopin simply hadn't listened to them.
Unfortunately, Phoebus and Quasimodo are followed to the Court of Miracles by Frollo. He arranges to have all of the Roma locked up, taking Phoebus and Quasimodo as well. That night he attempts to burn Esmeralda at the stake, much to Phoebus and Clopin's horror. Phoebus manages to break out of his cage, and rallies the people of Paris to stand up to Frollo. His words of encouragement cause the Parisians to free the Roma as well, including Clopin.
Fanon[]
Cloebus is a rarepair in the fandom. While there are currently 10 works for this ship on AO3, the most recent work is from 2020 so it is clear that interest in this ship has waned over the years. Some fans use Cloebus as a means of keeping Phoebus in a ship so that Esmeralda can otherwise end up in a relationship with Frollo or Quasimodo.
Fans of Cloebus enjoy the differences between the two characters, such as their personalities and their upbringings. In Cloebus works, Phoebus is often shown with reluctantly putting up with Clopin's schemes and penchant for chaos. This brings a strong Opposites Attract energy to their relationship dynamic.
