Before Clark and Oliver meet in "Arrow", the two had heard about one another from Lois Lane. When Oliver saw Clark for the first time, he knew who he was the very moment Lois called him "Smallville". From how he has heard Lois address Clark by the nickname she gave him, whenever she talked about Martha Kent's son. Oliver didn't hesitate to tell Clark that Lois has described him as a "geek."
Because the Green Arrow had stolen the necklace Martha was wearing, and didn't want them to own Lionel Luthor who had lent it to her, Clark decides to look into the archer's other known thefts. With help from Lionel on who the next target will be, Clark was able to catch Green Arrow in the act. During their battle, the Green Arrow notices that Clark had a few secrets of his own, while Clark realises that the thief has a quiver full of tricks. When Clark and Oliver learn that Lois was kidnapped, Clark was quick to blame Green Arrow from the article she was doing on him and voices his thoughts about the archer to Oliver. Who tells Clark that all the items Green Arrow stole were bought on the black market, and the people who bought them would do anything to get them back. When Chloe called and sent Clark a photo of a crest from the ring Lois took from around the thief's neck, he realises that he has seen the crest before. On the night he and Oliver met when he went to check on Lois, at Oliver's place.
With Oliver disappearing when Clark had his back turned on him, Clark goes to Oliver's apartment to confirm his suspicion of Oliver being Green Arrow. His theory was confirmed to be true when he finds Oliver's hidden room, that serves as his Green Arrow base. After Green Arrow saves Lois, Clark helps him to make his get away so he wouldn't be forced to reveal his identity to her. Clark then confronts Green Arrow about him knowing that he is Oliver Queen and that he now owns him one. When Oliver asks Clark why he helped him, Clark says that he doesn't think that Lois would like to know about her boyfriend's double, and that they would be even once Oliver returns the necklace he stole.
Clark may not like Oliver's thieving actions and doesn't like the way Chloe was depending Green Arrow, from returning the items he stole to their true owners, he doesn't expose Oliver's secret. Knowing what it is like, and didn't disagree when Chloe described Clark's silence for a code among superheroes. He then finds Oliver at the barn, where Oliver notices that Clark had been reading about him, and jokes that he and Lois should start a fan club on him. Clark asks Oliver if he plans to tell his secret and then warns him about the struggles of keeping secrets in a relationship. After Clark lost Lana to Lex, he didn't want Oliver to harm Lois. Feeling that Clark would do the right thing, Oliver gives him the necklace and then reveals how Lionel Luthor came to own it. Although Clark doesn't agree with Oliver's actions, he does hear him out on how people will need someone like him to help them.

After Green Arrow became a recurring character in the Smallville series, Clollie became one of its top slash ships. Between Clark and a member of the Justice League team, that Oliver funds in its universe. After befriending rich boy one for a good length of the series, knowing from the start that Lex will up to become his enemy, fans were pleased that Clark's second rich boy friend becomes a hero.
