Masters of Spinjitzu

Cole inherited his powers from his mother Lilly, who had inherited them from her father. However, Cole didn’t unlock his powers until taking possession of one of the Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu. In Cole’s case, his weapon was the Scythe of Quakes, which he obtained in “The Golden Weapon.”

Cole’s Earth powers remained limited for some time, due to the strained relationship between himself and his father Lou. In “The Royal Blacksmiths”, however, Cole was finally honest with his father about not wanting to follow in Lou’s career footsteps. After seeing Cole in action as a Ninja, Cole accepted his son’s decision and the pair were reconciled. Cole thus unlocked his true potential, achieving unprecedented power and control over that power.

Unfortunately, Cole lost access to his powers after surrendering his scythe to Lord Garmadon, who subsequently stole them and the others Golden Weapons, in “Day of the Great Devourer.” He would later regain the use of his powers, albeit temporarily, through an Elemental Blade that he obtained in “Island of Darkness.” When he obtained one of the Techno-blades in “The Surge”, it also manifested Cole’s Earth powers. In “Codename: Arcturus”, Cole and the other Ninja who had relied on weapons to access their powers were each granted a portion of the power of their friend Lloyd, the Green Ninja. Each of them, including Cole, could thus wield their powers without relying on any tools.

In “Winds of Change”, Cole and the other former Golden Weapon holders lose access to their powers after Lloyd is possessed by the villainous Morro. It is not until “Grave Danger” that Morro abandons Lloyd long enough for Cole and the others to regain the use of their powers and rescue the Green Ninja.

Following the events of the Crystalized season, Cole was once again left bereft of his powers. His efforts to recover them were covered in one portion of the book Quest for the Lost Powers. The story sees Cole briefly take up farming in the hopes that it will help him reconnect to the Earth, and thus his powers. When his father Lou visits him, Cole admits that he’s felt an absence in his life since losing his powers, which farming helps ease but doesn’t dispel entirely.

Later, when his Spinjitzu skills prove inadequate to stop a band of thugs employed by a ruthless landowner, Cole struggles with feelings of powerlessness. In particular, he feels as though he’s failing to live up to his mother Lilly. Eventually, after helping his new friends stand up for their land and being grounded by purpose, Cole finds his powers once again. After defeating the villains, he sets out to rejoin his fellow Ninja.

Fanon

Cole's Earth power is a fundamental and iconic part of his character. The character is in fact introduced to audiences for the first time as "Cole, Master of Earth." It is not, however, typically viewed in a romantic context, even jokingly.
