ContraHero is the slash ship between the Voice of the Contrarian and the Voice of the Hero from the Slay the Princess fandom.

Canon[]

Depending on the multitude of paths the Long Quiet can persist, the Hero can meet the Contrarian, especially in The Stranger route. Contrarian is easily comparable and unique compared to Hero for various reasons. He's a real jokester, always seeking new ways to get under the Narrator's skin. Hero is dependable on the player, but nonetheless loyal to those he believes deserves it.

He's notably much quieter than Contrarian's robust tone. They both agree on more things than initially let on, which isn't a high bar. Examples include both naturally having little trust towards the Narrator's ambiguity, and deciding how the player should hold their knife to look cooler. The two can cross paths more than once, such as in The Fury, The Apotheosis, The Razor, etc.

Their relationship isn't always the greatest, as Contrarian can get exceptionally jerky and abrasive depending on the route, a great example being The Fur where he outright sarcastically claims he doesn't like anyone present.

The Stranger Route[]

If the player decides to turn around and trek down the path they came, and persists despite The Narrator's best efforts, will spawn The Stranger. Hero and Contrarian don't spur into much conflict, besides Contrarian offering up decisions that only raise more possibility of death. Hero takes immediate note of how serious and ethical Contrarian gets if they manage to trap the many princesses into a packed abomination. Contrarian in turn argues he didn't think his games would have consequences.

And? What Happens Next?[]

If the player initially began with the Contrarian, he'll reappear alongside Hero towards the final chapter. In addition, instead of the original princess, entering the cabin in digression of The Shifting Mound will have The Stranger (a much more stable one) present. If The Long Quiet wishes to pursue a life with her, both voices don't mind. It's said afterwards they sought to locate the other voices.

Fanon[]

On the line of voices, ContraHero is the most popular ship among them all according to AO3, as well as one of the top five in the fandom. They currently have 20+ works on AO3 and a minor count of fanart. Multitude of the community endear their contrasting personalities yet commonality, almost as if Hero is a more mellow and rational variation of the other. Given the Contrarian makes a grand return in the end (relying on the player's conduct), it rises more traction for the acknowledgment of the two.

Trivia[]

  • In the Princess and the Dragon route, Contrarian was originally planned to replace the Opportunist. He would serve nothing more than being a nuisance to the Narrator and freeing The Princess.
