Cute Buddies is the friendship between Yoshi and Toad from the Super Mario fandom.

Toad and Yoshi are both individuals of a species that happens to be identical, save for their color.

Toad and Yoshi had mostly been separate friends of Mario for the longest time, Super Mario 64 DS seems to be the first time they interacted at length. In that game, Toad assists Yoshi in rescuing Mario, Luigi and Wario who had gotten lost in Peach's Castle trying to rescue the princess from Bowser. Though they had interacted before, it wasn't personal with Toad often being a showmaster for a Mario Party title Yoshi happened to be playable in or just sharing slots on the roster of a spin-off.

However, the Mario Party games sometimes give them unique team names, depending on installment. In Mario Party 5 and 6, Yoshi and Toad are known as the "Cute Buddies", a reference to their appearances. In Mario Party 8 however, they are the "Good Buddies", implying that they enjoy each other's company. In Mario Party DS, they are referred to as "Star Supporters", since they support the real stars of the franchise.

The New Super Mario Bros series would allow two Toads to be playable in multiplayer, with them being able to ride Yoshis (or carry Baby Yoshis) should the level be designed to include them. According to their character portraits, the Yellow Toad's assigned Yoshi is cyan, while the Blue Toad's is pink.

The Game & Watch Gallery series for the Game Boy had its version of Manhole, where Yoshi was playable and helping Toads, along with "Marios" and "Donkey Kongs" cross the street. In Fire however, both Yoshi and Toad need rescuing from the Mario Bros. In the sequel's parachute, Yoshi and Toad are once again in danger, this time of falling. In the fourth game, the minigame Chef has a preview animation of them cooking together. However, a Boo steals the batter that Toad had been stirring and then engulfs Yoshi with it.

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Yoshi teams up with Luigi and Tails Prower to save Toad, Mario and a few others.

In Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, the track "Yoshi Park 1" features cardboard cutouts of Yoshi and Toad baking cakes together as decorations.

In the opening cutscene Super Mario Sluggers, Yoshi and Toad are with Mario and some other friends on course for the Baseball Kingdom on their yacht. However, they don't have any chemistry with each other, suggesting that they don't have strong opinions about one another (at least in terms of playing baseball with each other).

Much like their actual relationship depicted in the games, fans generally don't have strong opinions on Toad's friendship with Yoshi. The only real exception was the Super Mario World cartoon, where Yoshi replaced Toad (much like in the game of the same name), yet the writers decided to create a new cavekid character named Oogtar to serve as a more direct replacement for him. Many fans of the franchise dislike Oogtar, leading to fans wondering why Toad couldn't simply return since he and Oogtar are practically the same character.

Trivia

• The Official Nintendo Magazine (from UK) did an interview with Toad for its 135th issue (page 43). He reveals that not being called back for Super Mario World was "the lowest point of his life" and that he resented Yoshi for years for "stealing his thunder". Only when he got a new job as the showmaster in Mario Party did he come around to like Yoshi.
• In the early build of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Blue Toad's Yoshi was red, most likely to have the Yoshis be all in the same colors as the playable characters.
