Cytham is the slash ship between Alhaitham and Cyno from the Genshin Impact fandom.
Canon[]
Cyno and Alhaitham started on the wrong foot but, as they are now, the two have become good friends. During the EN Genshin Ver. 4.6 Livestream, Alhaitham, among others, were referred to as Cyno’s friends during the short preview on Act II of Cyno’s Story Quest: Lupus Aureus. The CN Livestream also echoed the same sentiment. There are also plenty of instances showing the two of them getting along quite well.
Alhaitham and Cyno have been seen eating and drinking together, and having idle chatter and banter on multiple occasions, particularly in Alhaitham’s Character Demo: Think Before You Act, in Cyno’s reinauguration as General Mahamatra and in Kaveh’s Hangout.
The description in Alhaitham’s 2024 Official Birthday Art also points to the friendship between the two. While talking to the traveler, Alhaitham notes that when there’s something that calls for a celebration, Alhaitham, Cyno, Kaveh and Tighnari meet at the tavern and that’s how it’s always been with the four of them.
In Genshin Version 3.6, Cyno is comfortable enough to make a joke about how Alhaitham lives rent-free in each of the hearts of everyone at the table to which no one agrees.
In Genshin Version 4.6 Trailer, Alhaitham tells Traveler that something has come up pertaining to Cyno and Cyrus which begs the question, why would he know in the first place?
During Alhaitham’s Story Quest, Cyno was quick to pick up on the coded messages Alhaitham left. After Alhaitham caught the perpetrator Siraj, Cyno then took over the hivemind case. Alhaitham’s rational nature and Cyno’s just and fair one meld well together. During the later part of the Sumeru Archon Quest Act IV, their camaraderie is well-demonstrated. However, the two did not start out as friends.
Alhaitham mentions that he and Cyno have never spoken two words to each other at the Akademiya. This means they likely did not interact much, if at all before the Sumeru Archon Quests.
On the other hand, Cyno has been implied to have heard of Alhaitham from the complaints of Kaveh in various Voice Lines coming from Tighnari, Collei and himself. Unlike Tighnari, Cyno does not base his opinion of Alhaitham off Kaveh’s and forms his own at the end of Sumeru Archon Quest Act IV where he concludes that he is a reliable guy who is able to take control of things and avert disaster.
In Sumeru Archon Quest Act III, Alhaitham and Cyno crossed blades and only upon Dehya’s interference and Candace’s urging did they desist and attempted to fix the misunderstandings instead. For quite some time, the two can be seen arguing in the first part of the Sumeru Archon Quest Act IV. Alhaitham does not trust Cyno as he is the missing General Mahamatra whereas Cyno did not trust Alhaitham as he is a scribe working for Azar. Their suspicions, while rational, were wrong. Eventually, the two work around their distrust and avoid the Akademiya’s surveillance. Thereafter, they work together to save Nahida from the Azar and succeed; thus solidifying their camaraderie and friendship.
Mentions & Interactions[]
Alhaitham's Character Story 2[]
In his second Character Story, Alhaitham imparts that he sees no gain from being revered as a hero for playing a significant part in liberating Lesser Lord Kusanali. After resigning as Acting Grand Sage, he returns to his role as Scribe but notes that he has gained two benefits from his role.
First, he has gained financial benefits. His salary has stayed the same as when he was the Acting Grand Sage and he has completed various high-quality research projects by himself.
Second, he has improved his interpersonal relationships. Alhaitham has been able to befriend the other people who were part of the Nahida-saving operations, namely Candace, Cyno, Dehya, Isak, Nilou, Tighnari, Traveler and Paimon, Uncle Anpu and Rahman and his fellow eremites. Alhaitham says they've gotten close to the point where Alhaitham would greet them with a nod or two when they see each other.
Also, Alhaitham is regularly invited by Lesser Lord Kusanali to the Sanctuary of Surasthana where he also met those who contributed in saving the Archon. Among them are Cyno, Dehya and Nilou. At one point, Nilou wonders how he was able to come up and successfully execute such a bold plan. He then explains that his role as the Scribe had allowed him to learn more about the Akasha, as well as how to alter its status signals.
Refusing to boast about how he remained unscathed, Alhaitham tells Nilou that he has noticed Cyno and Dehya were also curious about the topic but that she was the only one bold enough to ask. He then insinuates that they might have been too shy to ask themselves.
Voice Lines[]
Cyno's Voice Line About Alhaitham[]
Cyno’s line about Alhaitham is locked behind the Sumer Archon Quest Act IV, also known as King Deshret and the Three Magi. After completing this quest, Cyno talks about his dislike for people who are too smart as they constantly overestimate themselves and venture into danger they are unable to control. However, he says that Alhaitham is an exception, that he is one of the most reliable ones. In most cases, Cyno notes that he is actually in control of things and has the ability to avert potential disaster.
In Sumeru Archon Quest Act III, Cyno declared his unfavorable opinion of Alhaitham and revealed he has been pursuing him for a long time. Cyno's renewed opinion about Alhaitham indicates a change of heart on the General Mahamatra's part.
Alhaitham's Voice Line About Cyno[]
Alhaitham's line about Cyno is locked behind his Story Quest, also known as The Illusion of the Mob. After completing this quest, Alhaitham says that though the hivemind case added to the matra's loadwork, his conscience is clear as the root cause ultimately has nothing to do with him. He then adds that he appreciates Cyno's impartiality as he has not once bothered Alhaitham about the incident.
In Sumereu Archon Quest Act III and Act IV, Alhaitham was not discreet to show his distrust towards the Matra Organization and was particularly hostile towards its head, General Mahamatra Cyno. However, his voice line indicates that he has come to trust Cyno’s judgment and appreciate his just and impartial nature.
Alhaitham's Character Demo: "Think Before You Act"[]
In Alhaitham's character demo, Cyno, Kaveh and Tighnari were gathered at a table at Lambad’s playing Genius Invokation of TCG when Kaveh opens up the conversation by saying that Alhaitham calling himself a “feeble scholar” is a bold-faced lie.
Cyno confirms that Alhaitham’s modesty was a facade to hide his true abilities. He adds that Alhaitham does not want others to know his true strength. Kaveh then pits Cyno against Alhaitham, asking the General Mahamatra if the latter is stronger than the former. Cyno, crossed-arms, refutes this and says “Of course not. ”
Alhaitham finally joins them and asks “Surely, you didn’t drag me out just to play cards?” Tighnari then explains they were debating how good he’d be in a fight. Alhaitham and Cyno exchange looks. Cyno teases him by saying that Alhaitham keeps his cards close to his chest, a word play on Alhaitham’s earlier question. Alhaitham replies “not at all.”
Alhaitham then goes at lengths to explain his technique to the three, seemingly to entertain their curiosity and perhaps to show that he does not really intend to keep his cards close to his chest at least to Cyno and the rest. He then remarks that his technique is quite simple. While Cyno and Tighnari disagree in unison, Alhaitham’s eyes dart towards Cyno.
The demo ends with Alhaitham calling out to Lambad and asking to have the same type of wine. Though it is unspecified which one of the three’s cup he drank from, considering Cyno’s cup is the only one that moved off-screen during Alhaitham’s explanation, it is implied Alhaitham drank from his cup.
Vulture Volans Story Chapter[]
At the very beginning, Ilyas (a scholar) is looking for a matra to report Siraj's illegal experiments and chances upon Traveler and Paimon. The three look for Cyno but Aarav (a matra) mentions that he is out on a mission. After Aarav conducts a lie detector test on Ilyas and judges it credible, he reports to then Acting Grand Sage Alhaitham as per protocol.
Alhaitham then leaves a letter for Cyno and asks to join the investigation. Paimon teases Alhaitham, telling him it's weird that he's working with the matra and alludes that there must be a special reason for it. Alhaitham denies this and says his interest was piqued and Paimon was overthinking things.
Thereafter, they head to the tavern based on Ilyas’ recollections. Aarav asks Alhaitham what their next course of action is but he explains that the new Akademiya Decree states that even a sage does not have the authority to interfere with the matra's actions during an ongoing investigation. He adds that if Cyno were present, he would not have asked Alhaitham for instructions but would instead tell him not to interfere.
After Siraj loses to Alhaitham and the collective consciousness collapses, he asks that Alhaitham arrests him and put him to trial. Alhaitham agrees he should be arrested and be trialed but said that the duty to arrest falls on the General Mahamatra. At that exact moment, Cyno makes his appearance with Aarav.
Cyno reveals Alhaitham left him coded messages so he easily found his way to Siraj’s base. Alhaitham further explains that he left trail markers for Cyno based on the letter he sent him at the start of the Story Quest.
While discussing the case, Cyno praises Alhaitham’s foresight as everything was as he predicted. Alhaitham confirms the job well done. Before leaving the area, Alhaitham leaves the arrest to Cyno and the traveler. At the very end, Cyno affirms that the investigation is reaching its conclusion, and that if Traveler encounters any members of the Siraj’s hivemind, to come see him. He then goes on to say that Alhaitham is waiting for them at the entrance, and to rest once they've finished.
At the end of the Story Quest, Alhaitham mentions his resignation as Acting Grand Sage to the Traveler and Paimon. He says that if Siraj had acted a few days later, he wouldn't have been involved and that it’s none of his concern. As to why, he replied to Paimon that he is unfit to be a sage nor desires to be one, and said that it would be very difficult and troublesome for him if the position becomes permanent; that this position is not something he wanted to spend the rest of his life doing. He successfully resigned and went back to being the scribe a few days later.

Alhaitham and Cyno share the Indoor gift set, Of Settled Thoughts. The description provides that the boundary between wisdom and ignorance can be crossed by those willing to settle in and read these books, one at a time.
Among the required furniture for this set are Treasure from the Land of Wisdom and Scrolls from the Land of Wisdom which are said to be found in the House of Daena and contain a numerous number of Akademiya-approved books. This is fitting for Alhaitham who is a bibliophile and who works as a scribe in the Akademiya.
Another furniture is the Karmaphala Wood "Counter-Assault" Dining Chair whose title was gained after a drunk scholar tried to arrest a chair but ultimately was subdued by it instead. This is fitting for Cyno whose primary job is arresting unruly scholars and leading the matra as its general.
Yet another piece of furniture is a long rectangular table called the Spirit of the Banquet. It is said to be seen often in restaurants, taverns and cafes of Sumeru City. In its description, it notes that despite placing a numerous number of things at the table, there is still plenty of space for conversation, gestures and laughter.
Serenitea Pot Dialogue[]
Alhaitham and Cyno bear similar dialogue on the location.
Alhaitham remarks that books are meant to be read, but in some households, they serve another function as decoration. He insinuates it's likely because the owners don't have the patience to read said books, alluding to the description of the indoor set regarding wisdom and ignorance.
Cyno praises how every book is in its place; with the spines facing outward, similar genres kept together, and there isn't a single banned volume. However, he notices some are crooked and sets to correct it at once.
Etc.[]
The Temple of Silence is a mysterious organization that Cyno canonically has allegiances to, while Alhaitham is one of the only known people to have contact with a member of the Temple. His outfit, the Rational, reads: '“Don’t bother the Scribe with trivialities… What do you think those soundproofers of his are for, anyway?” So observed an experienced staff member at the Temple of Silence.'
An aspect that governs Cyno's aim when invoking justice are the six deadly sins from which almost all the Akademiya's rules and laws originally derive. According to his character story, "the six ancient sins seem to have been forgotten by most, and ambitious people have been on the move since", he's taken them to heart and punishes all transgressors harshly, depending on which one they've broken. Curiously, Alhaitham seems to be among the rare few who remembers them closely, too. In Alhaitham's story quest, at an earlier time he describes when Siraj had presented his Hivemind project at an earlier stage. Alhaitham had rejected it because it broke the first cardinal sin, and that "from violating matters regarding human evolution to attempting the forbidden and fearing none, the six cardinal sins are the origin of all evil in this world. They are also what the sages use as a reference when formulating or amending the rules of the Akademiya."
Archon Quests[]
Act III: Dreams, Emptiness, Deception[]
Duel at the Entrance to Aaru Village
Alhaitham convinces Traveler and Paimon to head to Aaru Village, the safe haven of the desert folk. As they walk towards the entrance, Cyno ambushes them from above and Traveler parries his attack. A duel then ensues between Alhaitham and Cyno. The two cross blades, seemingly evenly matched. Cyno leaps forward, his feet landing on Alhaitham’s sword. He springs backward to gain aerial advantage. He strikes from above but Alhaitham repels him backward.
Cyno looks at Alhaitham whereas Alhaitham lets out a brief smile before controlling his expression and muttering the name, “... Cyno.”
The two then put their weapons down and converse. Alhaitham says that the two of them have barely spoken to each other at the Akademiya and inquires as to how invited the General Mahamatra’s wrath. Cyno does not answer and instead tells Alhaitham that he should not hope to evade Cyno’s judgment just because he escaped his attack. Unperturbed, Alhaitham questions his choice of wods and claims “elimination” is more accurate.
Cyno warns him that if he uses his full strength, not even Traveler could stop him. However, he admits to ambushing him although that he only did so to disable Alhaitham from resisting, standard matra practice as well Alhaitham knows. He retorts and says it seems to be Cyno’s own personal touch.
Paimon asks who Cyno is and what the position of General Mahamatra entails. Alhaitham describes Cyno as the General Mahamatra, the head of all the matra at the Akademiya, a formidable hunter and the ultimate nightmare for those who have committed academic crimes. Cyno questions Traveler’s trust in Alhaitham and advises Traveler to not side with him or believe anything that he says. He divulges that he has been pursuing Alhaitham for a long time and urges Traveler to stop defending him.
Traveler and Paimon come to his defense but Cyno reveals that a Divine Knowledge Capsule in Alhaitham’s possession and demands him to take it out lest Cyno retrieves it from Alhaitham himself. Only then does Alhaitham reveal the Divine Knowledge Capsule in his hand.
He tries to badger out of Cyno his purpose in pursuing the capsule and his reason for being all alone in the desert despite being the General Mahamatra. Alhaitham claims he knows of the stories of Cyno’s disappearance and asks if he had been given a morally dubious mission. He questions Cyno’s authority and asks why he does not wield his authority and resources to judge Alhaitham within the walls of the Akademiya. Cyno looks downward, knowing he had been caught.
Dehya then joins in their conversation. She forbids them from bringing their dispute into Aaru Village and should they fight again, she would be sure to beat some sense into them. Both Cyno and Alhaitham remain silent. Soon, the five are caught up in a sandstorm. Candance then calls them to take cover in her home.
Discussion in Candace’s Home
Cyno looks intently at Alhaitham inside Candace’s abode, the room filled with awkward silence. Candace intervenes as the guardian of the village and urges the two to speak to each other and finally put their hostility to rest.
Cyno clears out the fact that he is not working for Azar. After his request for an audit was rejected by then Grand Sage Azar, he realized there was something amiss and chose to exile himself in order to investigate the Akademiya. This affirmed Alhaitham’s own suspicions that Azar was up to no good. Cyno then laments how the Akademiya merely uses the matra as tools to assert control over knowledge and how matra principles do not mean anything to them. He asserts his intention to strive to find the truth and administer judgment by his own name. Paimon then asks why he sees Alhaitham as a target. Cyno reveals that the sages asked Alhaitham to investigate the Traveler.
Alhaitham does not dispute this and admits that he was promised a glimpse of divine knowledge once he completes this task but wary of the sages, he began his own investigation. He soon realized that Azar’s true intent was to drive him insane with the use of divine knowledge after completing the mission. He defends himself by saying that he had no intention of lending help to the Akademiya and it was traveler who acquainted their self with him, not the other way around.
Unconvinced, Cyno asks if he has knowledge of the Akademiya’s secret project. Alhaitham rebuts by saying that neither are trusted by the Akademiya and that they are in the same boat. Cyno then relents that while he is not fully convinced, he would not regard Alhaitham as an enemy.
The Missing Scholars
Worried that Candace was fighting the monsters alone, Alhaitham and Cyno, together with Dehya, Traveler and Paimon, set out to find her. They then lent their blades to fight the Rifthounds in front of the village.
After defeating the monsters, Uncle Anpu, the chief of Aari Village, introduces himself to them. Alhaitham and Cyno stand next to each other while Uncle Anpu discusses the missing Village Keepers (scholars who have gone mad that were exiled to Aaru Village by the Akademiya).
Cyno then offers a lending hand and takes it upon himself to investigate their disappearance. Alhaitham takes a dig at his former position as General Mahamatra, saying that the matra are the reason for their exile and asking if Cyno is trying to atone for it. He then says he’s fascinated by how Cyno thinks. Cyno then rebuts that regardless of his position, he will eliminate Alhaitham if he is guilty. Cyno then decides to investigate the matter with Traveler and they meet Isak, an orphan raised by one of the Village Keepers who have gone missing.
King Deshret & the Three Magi[]
In the next act, they come to a point where Cyno ponders how the Akademiya is aware of their plans before Alhaitham tells Cyno he's the mole, much to his anger. However, Alhaitham goes on to explain that the Akasha System has the ability of computation, and with all the knowledge composed on Cyno, they accumulated what they knew on Cyno in the recent past and its calculations were able to predict how Cyno would act due to his solitary nature. Although it dismays Cyno at first, he works through it and they eventually come to the next phase of their plan that involves trekking into the desert.
Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises[]
In the last chapter of the Archon Quest, the group convenes at Aaru Village where they strategize with the last leg of their vendetta against the sages that involves using a group of Eremites as bait in order to infiltrate Sumeru City on the next Jnagarbha Day and draw the Akademiya guards' attention away from what the group plans on doing in order to save the Dendro Archon and release Irminsul from corruption. After completing a series of tasks, the Traveler meets up with Cyno at Caravan Ribat and they proceed from there. However, Cyno does meet it with extreme doubt due to his understanding of the Eremites and not wanting to senselessly sacrifice them, but the Eremite known as Rahman convinces him that it's what they want, and Cyno begrudgingly goes through with it.
Through a complex series of events, they and the group manage to save Nahida, Irminsul, and even reverse Eleazar among other amazing feats that comes as a result of their teamwork. All of which was because of Alhaitham's extensive planning from the very beginning that they succeeded at all, yet it wasn't something the Scribe could've done alone.
In the aftermath, Cyno and the others are invited by Nilou to a feast at the Grand Bazaar where they not only celebrate their victory, but Cyno's reinstatement as General Mahamatra. During it, they expressed similar joy at the atmosphere the feast provided despite both of them being rather solitary, especially after Nahida possessed the Traveler's body briefly to express her thanks to everyone. In the wake of the Archon Quest, they will be instrumental in restoring Sumeru, working with the Archon to reform the Akademiya and bring justice to the likes to the discriminated Desertfolk among other many works to bring peace and justice to Sumeru once again.
Miscellaneous[]
Xiphos & Faramarz[]
Alhaitham’s initial signature sword during the promotional video and Archon Quests, known as Xiphos’ Moonlight[1], contains this as part of its description:
‘Later on, the swordsman adored by the Jinni of moonlight would encounter an exiled foreign wanderer. The wanderer had accepted silver coins, blood money from kings opposed to Tulaytullah, and he shouldered their grudges and hatred against the hero. Thus they who should have become friends at some bar became foes in battle, fighting each other to the death with the moonlight as their witness. In the fight, their blades were bathed in ruby wine while the overripe pomegranate burst, vital, vivid red pouring from the rupture… The deadly duel finally settled. The pale moon cast its cold light upon the winner and the defeated alike. "Whichever direction the wind blows, there is never a single ripple in the cup of life. The three departed goddesses had long determined the heroes' fate, even if they could never fathom it themselves.’
Although it’s unconfirmed, given how Alhaitham is first shown with this sword in the Sumeru Promotional Video when he fights against Cyno, there’s the strong implication that Alhaitham is meant to parallel Xiphos while Cyno parallels Faramarz, the foreign wanderer. This seems to fit given how, when they first meet, Alhaitham has been on the same side as Cyno all along despite the latter’s misgivings; in addition, they have a very contentious dynamic with one another that could fit the description of how ‘they should have been friends’. Unlike the tragic tale of Xiphos and his would-be friend, Alhaitham and Cyno work out their differences in uniting to fight for the same cause.
"That mortal is not alike to you. He comes from a sordid land, and his hands are stained with blood, while his heart festers with delusions and madness. [...] Only then can the bright moon and the newborn stars grant him pure wisdom and help him shed his bitter memories and desires."
The Light of Foliar Incision, is proven in its lore to have been Faramarz's. Its description takes place after his tragic battle with Xiphos in the desert that saw the latter defeated and dead. As this sword's description shows, Faramarz's fate following the battle is one of delusion and madness, and he encounters the legendary huntress Viridescent and, perhaps indirectly, Viaghara. Although he's given a chance at redemption, Viridescent stays her hand and allows him to try and atone, and in doing so, forges the Light of Foliar Incision. Instead of needing redemption, Cyno and Alhaitham put aside their differences unlike their failed predecessors and even become friends by 3.4.
Reincarnation Theory[]
Although it’s fannish, it’s implied that Alhaitham could be a possible reincarnation of the Scarlet King. Those who agree with this theory[2] note that his eyes mirror the ‘Eye of the Scarlet King’ shown in a story cutscene that detailed the truth behind the Greater Lord’s demise during what was presumably the Cataclysm. Fans note how, when beings like gods (ex. Zhongli, Nahida) change form, they retain their eyes no matter how different their appearance is. This could mean the same for reincarnations, and how transmigrants of the Scarlet King might possess these same eyes as seen in Alhaitham. In addition to his eyes, the patterning on Alhaitham's shirt closely matches another Deshret-connected motif that appears to be of his pyramid with the gemstone near his collarbone aligning with the placement of a similar rhombus seen in other depictions of Deshret[3].
Cyno, meanwhile, is seen as the Scarlet King’s priest’s reincarnation. The priest, known as Kasala, was interred in ruins and recorded a last testament to the truth of the previous Dendro Archon and Scarlet King’s fall and how he remained faithful until the very end[4]. Not only does Cyno don a jackal headdress identical to the one Kasala wore, but his signature weapon, the Staff of the Scarlet Sands, is one of two parts of the scepter that the Scarlet King possessed that was emblematic of his authority in the desert over his peoples that his retainers could authenticate. As one of his retainers, Kasala would've likely had similar authority. In the Windblume 3.5 event, Breath of the Windblume, Cyno and Lisa revealed that his power sourced from Hermanubis. As written in the Lay of Al-Ahmar, it's strongly implied that Hermanubis[5] is the Scarlet King's servant. While Cyno's rumored background in the Vision portion of his character story mentions the wild rumor that he was raised by a Hermanubis priest and sent to the Akademiya to enact his will, Cyno's revelation to Lisa revealed that he does indeed house the spirit of a nameless priest that many believe is Kasala's.
Quotes[]

I wouldn't believe a single word that comes out of his mouth. I have been pursuing this scribe for a long time. I urge you, stand back and do not seek to defend him any longer. Otherwise... there will be consequences.”
- — Cyno, during The Four at Loggerheads.

Fanon[]
Ever since the release of the Sumeru Promotional Video, fans started and still enjoy the idea of Cyno and Alhaitham having either a bitter rivalry or a tenuous alliance. Their similar personalities often see fans depicting them as being prone to arguing frequently, or otherwise having antagonistic encounters with each other.
In addition, with the resolution of the Archon Quests and cameos in Alhaitham's story quest and character demo, Alhaitham and Cyno are speculated to work closely together in the Akademiya. Trivia[]
- With Alhaitham bearing a Dendro Vision and Cyno an Electro one, they're both capable of producing a Quicken reaction, which in turn is capable of Aggravate and Spread.
- In the wild, mainly in Africa, jackals and eagles are known to compete over similar resources (such as prey) despite having the odd story where they're seen hunting together[6]. Given Alhaitham and Cyno's contentious relationship and friction while working together, this fits them. In addition, Cyno's constellation is shaped like a jackal while Alhaitham's is an eagle.
- Because of Alhaitham's associations with eagles in his name and constellation, and Cyno with jackals in his aesthetic and constellation, Cyno is often compared to Anubis while Alhaitham is to Horus of Egyptian Kemeticism.
- Their English voice actors have known each other since middle school.
