Dad Barret is the family ship between Barret Wallace and Marlene Wallace from the Final Fantasy fandom.

Canon

Barret was friends with Marlene's biological father and an acquaintance of her mother. After Barret failed to save his friend while losing his hand, on the day their home town was attacked, he found himself adopting Marlene and raises her like she is his own flesh and blood. Their relationship is shown to be incredibly close, and Barret seems to care about Marlene more than anyone or anything else. Marlene loves Barret back, and is shown to idolize him.

When Shinra causes the plate to fall on the slums Barret is distraught, thinking that Marlene has been crushed. He screams out her name in agony, asking what the point of everything is if he lost his daughter. Tifa runs to his side and reassures Barret that Marlene is safe; Aerith told her so before being taken away by the Turks. The party hurries to Aerith's house, where Barret is able to reunite with Marlene. He cries as he hugs her, telling her how relieved he is that she's okay. Marlene comforts Barret, telling him not to cry.

If Cloud goes on a date with Barret at the Golden Saucer, the pair will talk about Marlene. Barret tells Cloud to stay far away from Marlene, due to his proclivity to attract women to him. He calls Marlene his "prized possession", then says that he wishes she could be at the Golden Saucer with them to see the fireworks.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Due to the extended length of the remakes, the relationship between Barret and Marlene is given more screen time. They are again shown to be close, with Barret often talking about how he can't wait to return home to Marlene when Avalanche is on their missions. Marlene is shown to be wary of Cloud as he is a stranger and Barret told her to steer clear of strangers. Barret nearly fights Cloud for scaring Marlene before Tifa is able to talk him down. During the mission to take down the Sector 5 reactor, Barret reveals that he likes to read to Marlene at night and does "all the voices".

Fanon

Fans of Barret Wallace love the father-daughter bond he has with Marlene. From seeing how much he loves and Marlene being the reason he was fighting for a better world. Dad Barret is essential to Barret's character, and is a perfect reflection of his soft side in comparison to his typically gruff interactions with Cloud. The relationship between the two was one of the first appearances of a father figure in the Final Fantasy series, which fans loved all the way back in 1997 as well.

Because of Barret's status as "Dad", some fans like to take this farther and make him the "Dad" of the entire VII party. The most popular iteration of this is painting him as a father figure for Cloud.

There are currently over 60 works on AO3 for this pairing. It is Barret's fourth most popular ship and Marlene's most popular.
