DanTsu is the het ship between Dan Katō and Tsunade from the Naruto fandom.
Canon[]
Part I[]
Tsunade first met Dan at a shinobi meeting in Konohagakure. Tsunade's younger brother Nawaki had recently been killed in battle and there was no medical staff on field, so Tsunade proposed that each team would include at least one medical-nin and also called for the creation of a medical training facility. The hokage agreed with Tsunade but shot down her idea because they were in the middle of a war and did not have the time, and then Dan spoke up in agreement with Tsunade. Tsunade approached Dan after the meeting and thanked him, to which he responded that a shinobi's goal should not be to die in battle. Dan offered to walk Tsunade home as it was dark outside, and when she pointed out that they lived in opposite directions, insisted on doing so because it reminded him of walking his younger sister to the academy, who had also been killed in battle.
Dan and Tsunade began to see each other on a regular basis and became a couple at some point. The two later had a deep conversation while overlooking the village. Dan talked about his little sister's death and how he decided from that moment that becoming the hokage was his dream, to make sure that he could protect all of the people in the village. Tsunade then gave Dan her necklace that she had inherited from her grandfather, the first hokage, and had also given it to her brother Nawaki befored he died.
Dan was later mortally wounded in battle while Tsunade was with him. The other shinobi pointed out that it was impossible to save him because his kidney was blown up but Tsunade desperately healed him anyway and managed to stop his bleeding. Dan kept insisting that he was not ready to die yet and Tsunade kept promising that she would save him and that he would be okay. Dan then succumbed to his wounds and Tsunade still tearfully tried to heal him until her comrades told her to stop because he was gone. Tsunade then stared at her hands which had Dan's blood all over them.
Dan's death had a profound impact on Tsunade. She developed hemophobia, the fear of blood, after seeing Dan's blood on her hands. Tsunade quit being a shinobi and left the village, and also took on Dan's niece Shizune as her apprentice. Years later, Orochimaru offered to revive Dan in exchange for her healing his hands as long as she provided a sacrifice for the Edo Tensei, and she considered this offer, but did not follow through with it because it was not what Dan would want. Tsunade then accepted the position of hokage in honor of him and Nawaki.
Part II[]
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Dan was revived by Kabuto using the Edo Tensei and was forced to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces. After being released from the Edo Tensei, he used the Reika no Jutsu to fly over to Tsunade and saved her from one of Madara's attacks. They were able to speak in Tsunade's subconscious, and Dan told Tsunade that she has not changed since he was alive and thanking him for becoming the hokage in his stead. He told Tsunade that he would wait for her in death but to not follow him there yet and kissed her on the forehead, mirroring her kiss on his forehead from the years prior, before disappearing back into the afterlife.
Tsunade was later trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi. She dreamed that Dan was still alive and the current hokage while she walked beside him with her teammates and brother.
Fanon[]
DanTsu has a fair amount of popularity in the Naruto fandom, but it is often overlooked compared to other major pairings despite its canon status. It is mostly overlooked due to Dan already being a posthumous character by the start of the series and is overshadowed by the pairings between Tsunade and her teammates. DanTsu is loved by those who prefer canon ships and Tsunade's relationship with Dan is considered by many to be an important part of character development. On AO3, there are currently 170+ for the pairing. DanTsu rivals the JiraTsu and OroTsu pairings.
