DeviantArt is the family ship between Carl and Markus from the Detroit: Become Human fandom.
Canon[]
THE PAINTER
Markus awakens Carl, who grumpily complies. He goes to get Carl ready for the day before he takes him downstairs for breakfast. After serving Carl breakfast, Carl tells Markus to find something to do while he eats. Markus will then either play the piano, play chess, or read a book. The two then go into the studio for Carl to work on his painting.
Carl finishes his painting and asks Markus what he thinks. Markus will give an answer and Carl will tell him how at this point he's only holding onto the past, before asking Markus to paint something. Markus paints a replica of something from the studio, but Carl wants Markus to paint something from his own perspective. Markus doesn't believe he can do so, but Carl encourages him. Carl then walks Markus through on how to feel, and paint. Markus then paints on his own feelings, which Carl is impressed by.
Carl's son Leo then shows up, asking for money, but Carl denies him since he's on Red Ice again. Leo then see's Markus and accuses Carl about caring more about Markus than him, and pushes Markus. Carl tells him that's enough, and Leo leaves, leaving Markus and Carl in the studio.

Detroit: Become Human is a game based on choices. The following canon are "good" choices being made.
Since leaving Carl's home, Markus will come to visit him. Carl is weak and very ill. Markus will rush to his bedside. He will ask Carl for advice in dealing with he humans, as his people just want to free. Carl will soon fall asleep, making Markus leave.

DeviantArt is a beloved relationship within the fandom, stemming from the very beginning as Carl always respected Markus when Markus was treated less than human by other humans.
There is a popular theory within the community about Markus being a gift to Carl. After players found out that Kamski, the former CEO, was the one to gift Markus, who's a rare prototype, to Carl, people started to wonder as to why that was done in the first place. This started a theory that deviancy was supposed to happen and was planned all along by Kamski from the start. People then reasoned that Kamski gifted Markus to Carl was because he's a painter who would be able to see the humanity in him and see him as an equal. The theory is also supported by the quickest ending in the game and also the scene between Kamski and Connor.
On AO3, it is the most written relationship for Carl and the fifth most written for Markus. It is the 27th most written within the Detroit: Become Human fandom tag.
