Canon[]

Season 1[]

Hazel and Dev first met on Hazel's first day of school, where Dev is quick to poke fun at Hazel, following her awkward introduction to her new class. Later on, during lunch, Dev approaches Hazel, formally introducing himself to her, as well as giving her a rundown on the rest of their classmates. He finishes off his spiel by informing her she sat in paint, leaving on his drones while laughing. Throughout the first half of season 1, Hazel and Dev view each other as rivals, with Dev frequently getting Hazel's name incorrect on purpose, calling her a variety of words which begin with the letter H, such as “Hazmat”,

A New Dev-elopment

When Mr. Guzman, their teacher, announces a partners scavenger hunt with the grand prize being tickets to Wave 'N Rage water park, Hazel is to work alongside her friends, before the class is informed that the pairs are per-assigned, which crushes Hazel, and is met with mockery from Dev. Hazel mumbles to herself that she wishes she understood why Dev acts in this manner, which Cosmo takes as literal, using his magic to change the list so that Hazel is paired with Dev for the scavenger hunt. Both Dev and Hazel are unhappy with this, but Hazel is determined to make it work, in order to gain the prize. Hazel shows up at Dev's house the next day, and convinces Dev to do the scavenger hunt by beating a difficult level on Dev's favorite video game, much to his shock. Over the course of the day, Hazel and Dev complete the scavenger hunt together, and Hazel discovers that Dev is skilled at puzzle solving. They solve each of the clues together, with Dev becoming more open and kind towards Hazel, the pair bonding for the first time. Hazel and Dev return to Dev's home with one final clue, and Dev calls Hazel by her real name for the first time. Hazel meets Dev's father, who is quick to brush off the scavenger hunt, which Dev seems to take to heart, deciding that he no longer wishes to partake in the hunt. Disappointed, Hazel leaves to get Pizza. Dev follows her there, apologizing for his behavior, asking if Hazel would like to give the scavenger hunt another try. She agrees, and the two end up breaking into the school, believing that the final part of the hunt is there. They end up not getting the photograph needed, and explain such to their teacher the following Monday. However, the Principal comes in with the images caught on the security cameras, proving they got the last photograph. However, Wave 'n Rage has since shut down, meaning the only prize they have earned is "friendship". Hazel and Dev are okay with this, and cement their friendship with a high-five.

Lost and Founder's Day

At the Founder's Day parade, Hazel becomes concerned for Dev, after seeing his distraught reaction to his father's golden statue of himself and his prized cowboy boots. Dev later finds out that his dad, Dale Dimmadome, is on the hunt for a hat wearing "anomaly", who hasn't bought anything for the duration of the festival. Dev is quick to draw a conclusion that it is Hazel, and runs off to find her, wishing to stop his Dad from finding her. They run into one-another, and in a panic, Dev calls Hazel an anomaly, takes the hat she won and runs off, not communicating what is going on to her, which leaves Hazel upset and annoyed, believing that Dev has reverted to his old ways. At the end of the fair, Dev finds Hazel again, offering her back the hat, but he and Hazel fight, with Hazel saying Dev is "just like his father". Thinking their friendship is over, Dev finds himself feeling miserable, which leads to him getting his own fairy godparent, Peri.

Battle of the Dimmsonian

Dev and Hazel make amends at the school's museum sleepover field trip, with hazel reassuring Dev that they're still friends, even if they have had an argument. However, due to the stress of the situation, with Dev having wished a vengeful Demi-Goddess to the museum, they agree to talk about it later on, and band together to defeat her, using the combined powers of their wishes.

Lost in Fairy World

Hazel and Dev spend a day exploring Fairy World together, after wishing to visit, and stealing Peri's wand. They laugh and play together in each of the different locations, blasting each other with spells, riding on doll-fins, and sitting on the Fairy World sign together. Upon accidentally un-wishing themselves, they navigate through the Hocus Poconos together, thwarting the Wish Dragon, before they realize that Hazel and Dev are Godkids, returning them to Jorgen's office to reunite with Cosmo, Wanda, and Peri.

Operation: Birthday Takeback

Hazel attends Dev's 10th birthday party, to which he is very excited to have her at. Hazel gives him two gifts: a copy of the new "Prime Meridian Love" manga, and a pair of rocket boots, both of which Dev loves. Peri, Cosmo and Wanda leave Dev and Hazel alone, but this is short lived, as the doorbell to Dev's house rings again. Dev's father has used an algorithm to hire a party princess, who turns out to be Vicky, much to the anguish of Dev. Vicky ends up forcing the children to do hard labor for her next parties, so Hazel and Dev, alongside Hazel's friends Jasmine and Winn, stage a revenge plan, and torment Vicky in hopes of making her leave. Hazel and Dev eventually dress as a ghost, trying to scare Vicky away. However, she sees through their ruse, making the situation worse. Hazel is willing to sacrifice herself to allow Dev to escape and find their fairies, but Dev refuses to leave her behind, using his Au-pair drones to save her as well. They end up in his father's office, where they reunite with their fairies, and learn about "Project H". Dev is devastated to learn that his father is trying to learn about Hazel, and lashes out, feeling upset and betrayed that his Father missed his birthday in order to learn more about Hazel. It is accidentally revealed that their friendship was sparked via a wish, and Hazel and Dev argue more. Hazel leaves the party defeated, wishing Dev a happy birthday.

Best of Luck

Hazel and Dev's friendship degrades more, as Dev becomes visibly more jealous of Hazel, citing the fact that his Dad cares for her more through "Project H", and the fact that she has two fairies, while he only has one. After breaking contact with his fairy, Dev teams up with the anti-fairy Irep, and wishes for Hazel to have bad luck. After winning the rock-paper-scissors tournament via cheating, Dev is annoyed that Hazel is not phased by losing, which sparks him to reveal that he is working with Irep, making as many rule breaking wishes as possible, culminating in him trying to wish away Cosmo and Wanda, which is stopped by Jorgen. After all of Irep's wishes are undone, Hazel attempts to talk to Dev, to which he lashes out. Hazel puts her foot down, throwing the prize for the tournament, a free T-Shirt, at his face before storming off.

The Battle of Big Wand

Upon arriving at Fairy World, Hazel discovers that Dev has teamed up with Irep again, in order to take over Fairy World. Dev explains to Hazel why he has done so, feeling jealous that she has captured the city, and his father's attention, and that he believes that taking over Fairy World is the thing he needs to earn his father's love. Dev then captures Cosmo and Wanda, wishing Hazel back to Earth. Hazel assembles a ragtag team in order to take Dev down, but by the time she gets back to the Big Wand, she finds out from Cosmo and Wanda that he willingly handed over the key to the net cages, upon realizing that his father would never prioritize him over business, and that he was upset because no magic could give him the one thing he wanted. Hazel restores Fairy World to normal, and confronts Dev one last time. She asks if he knew that he would lose his fairy and his memories if he didn't succeed, to which Dev says he deserves it. Hazel agrees, but thanks him for doing the right thing in the end, and freeing Cosmo, Wanda and Peri, before his memories are erased by Jorgen, and he is transported back to Earth.

Fanon[]

Devzel became popular amongst the fans after the second half of the first season of The Fairly OddParents!: A New Wish began to air. Commonly cited reasons for shipping them being the parallels between Hazel and Dev falling into a water fountain, and Antony and his own crush doing the same, or the development of their bond from enemies to friends which takes place from "A New Dev-elopment" to "Operation: Birthday Takeback". Their relationship is often portrayed by fans as either a one-sided or mutual crush, with the two developing feelings for one-another after their friendship blossoms further.

The pairing of Devzel draws many comparisons and similarities in fans' eyes between the dynamics of Buxner and Chlimmy in the original 2001 series.
