Doralan is the slash ship between Dorian Gray and Alan Campbell from the The Picture of Dorian Gray fandom.
Canon[]
After killing Basil Hallward in cold blood the night before, Dorian Gray felt conflicted about what to do with his corpse now that he saw it in the daylight. So he told one of his servants to send a letter to someone he knew, giving exact instructions should he not find him at his regular residence. As he waited, he worried over what would happen should Alan Campbell be out of England at the moment. He then reminisces about how he used to be friends with him, but the "intimacy" suddenly stopped and Alan never smiled back when they happened to meet. Dorian remembered Alan as a rational mind with a passion for science, everything regarding the arts he gained from Dorian. However, Dorian remembers that he and Alan share a passion for music, which was actually one of the key factors that led to them becoming friends. They had met at Lady Berkshire's and then spend the next eighteen months being wherever they could find good music. Dorian could not recall why their bond was destroyed, Alan always excused himself whenever the two of them were at the same party and even avoided music which Dorian thinks is because it reminds Alan of him.
Shortly before Dorian was on the verge of a breakdown from waiting so long, a servant informed him that Alan Campbell had arrived, which greatly relieved Dorian. Dorian greets him cordially, but Alan coldly replies that he never intended to enter Dorian's house again, only doing so because Dorian wrote that it was a matter of life and death. Dorian waited until they were completely alone, then confessed that a dead man was sitting at a table in a room where nobody but him has access to. But just as Dorian tells him to not ask questions about the nature of Basil's death, Alan cuts him off by saying that he should keep his horrible secrets to himself. Dorian reluctantly apologizes, but tells him that he is the one man who is able to save him. He tells Alan that Basil came to his house undetected and should be in Paris right now, so people wouldn't notice that he's gone for months. He begs Alan to disintegrate Basil's corpse to destroy all the evidence of Dorian's hand in his death. Alan calls him mad for that to his face, but Dorian only focuses on Alan finally addressing him by his first name. When Alan calls him out on confessing this to him and then expecting him to help him, not caring what effect this would have towards his reputation, Dorian lies about Basil dying by suicide. Alan still refuses, correctly deducing that Dorian still had a hand in it, so Dorian finally confesses that he killed Basil hoping that that will help Alan understand his situation. Alan however is absolutely disgusted by Dorian's lack of empathy, but Dorian tries to convince him that doing that "experiment" on Basil would be for humanity's benefit. When Alan still refuses, Dorian reminds him of the times when they were friends, but Alan shoots that down by saying those days are dead. Dorian finally manages to get another reaction out of him by giving him a written note and letting him read it of his own choice. When Dorian threatens him to send an incriminating letter if Alan still refuses to help him, Alan finally relents and prepares the "experiment". Dorian insisting that Alan should not leave the house what he needs will be delivered to him by Dorian's servants, without telling them what it is for. After five hours of preparing and Dorian repeatedly shutting down Alan's conscience, the deed is done and Dorian checks to see Basil's corpse had completely disappeared. When Dorian thanks him, Alan wishes to never speak to him again before leaving.
Later, Dorian Gray hears that Alan Campbell had killed himself because he couldn't live with the guilt. Dorian, having gone too far at that point, doesn't dwell on these news for too long.
Fanon[]
Among scholars, a common theory is that Dorian and Alan were lovers and that Alan's animosity stems from a particularly messy break-up. Similarly, the letter that Dorian was planning to send is not elaborated on in the text, but Alan's reaction implies that Dorian was threatening to out Alan to Victorian high society. Readers have plenty of room to fill in the gaps before Dorian crossed the point of no return.
On AO3, Doralan is the most written ship for Alan and the sixth most written for Dorian. There are currently 20+ written works.
