DottoScara is the slash ship between Il Dottore and Scaramouche (now Wanderer) from the Genshin Impact fandom.
Canon[]
Dottore and Scaramouche encountered each other for the first time approximately 400 years prior to the start of the game at the Tatarasuna Furnace in Inazuma. Dottore was operating under orders of Pierro at the time and was disguised as a Fontaine engineer, Escher, and Scaramouche was a nameless being only referred to as the Kabukimono by the Tatarasuna locals. Dottore took what appears to be an immediate interest in Scaramouche's special constitution and was the one to suggest to Pierro that the puppet be recruited into the Fatui.
At the time, Kabukimono lived with the human workers at the Tatarasuna Furnace and considered them his friends. In disguise for his assigned mission, Dottore infiltrated the group of workers and caused an environmental disaster at the Furnace, killing an armory officer named Niwa. Dottore placed Niwa's heart inside of a device of his making and instructed Kabukimono to enter the furnace with it. The Kabukimono survived as the mechanism protected him. Dottore lied and claimed the heart came from an innocent servant Niwa had killed before fleeing. An outraged and saddened Kabukimono discarded the heart and left Tatarasuna without ever knowing of "Escher's" true identity or what really occurred until many years later.
In Inversion of Genesis, Nahida presents a fairy tale version of those events based on the memories of Scaramouche and Dottore. The tale makes use of Nahida's trademark love of allegory. Nahida heavily suggests in her tale that Dottore felt "solace" when he encountered Scaramouche, as they were both eccentric outsiders that wished to be like the humans around them. This sense of solace would then become the foundation to Dottore's anger when the Kabukimono came to be accepted by the denizens of Tatarasuna, thus leaving Dottore as the only outsider if things proceeded as they would. Dottore's perception of himself in the tale aligns with the information available in an artifact that briefly teased at his backstory.
They met once again when Scaramouche had been recruited by Pierro to become a Fatui Harbinger and became colleagues. According to Wanderer's Character Story 4, Dottore welcomed him warmly and Scaramouche became the subject of the research and experimentation that would allow Dottore to create his segments, a process that took decades. In return, Dottore unlocked the seal that had been placed on Scaramouche's powers, making him stronger and enabling him to rise in rank. Scaramouche was sent on many missions to the Abyss at the orders of the Tsaritsa, and would return to have any injuries repaired and treated by Dottore. In the Archon Interlude quest, Dottore voices his belief that it was a shame that Scaramouche was repeatedly sent to the Abyss.
After obtaining the Electro Gnosis from Yae Miko in Inazuma, Scaramouche disappeared for a time and later reunited with Dottore in Sumeru. At some point, Scaramouche gave the Gnosis (his “heart”) to Dottore, who in turn offered it to the Sages of Sumeru, asking them, ''Do you wish to create a God?" which set the stage of the events of the Sumeru Archon quest. The two worked together to create a new artificial god, Shouki no Kami, using Scaramouche and the Electro Gnosis as a power source for the body. After Scaramouche's defeat, Dottore expressed a disappointment in the conclusion of his experiment, and left Scaramouche behind.
In the following Interlude Quest the player follows Scaramouche, who will later adopt the title of Wanderer, as he discovers the truth of the Tatarasuna Incident that influenced his view of humans centuries ago. As of patch 3.3, he's sworn revenge on Dottore for manipulating him.
Quotes[]
Voicelines[]
- “It's a pity that Lesser Lord Kusanali already forced him to erase so many of his segments. The joy I would have derived from slicing them apart one by one...”
- — Wanderer's voiceline "About The Doctor"
Quests[]
- “The Doctor has never known his place. Even now, the puny human thinks himself capable of interfering in the business of the new god. You're still too naive if you think a few words will be enough to convince me to destroy The Doctor.”
- — Scaramouche in Chapter III: Act V
- “You were the most resilient test subject I ever came across. Thanks to you, I was able to garner a great deal of information. Alas, after that, you were under orders to remain in the Abyss. We barely saw each other, and it became difficult to further refine the knowledge I had gained.”
- — Dottore in Interlude Chapter: Act III
- “The Doctor: You were the most resilient test subject I ever came across. Thanks to you, I was able to garner a great deal of information.
The Doctor: Alas, after that, you were under orders to remain in the Abyss. We barely saw each other, and it became difficult to further refine the knowledge I had gained.
Scaramouche: That was gracefully worded. Ever wonder what they'd think if they knew that nothing matters to you apart from your crazy experiments?
The Doctor: I suggest you speak to me in a more respectful tone, Scaramouche. The mere fact of your utility does not make you indestructible.” - — Conversation between Dottore and Scaramouche in "Inversion of Genesis".
Fanon[]
Dottoscara is one of the oldest ships involving Dottore, dating back to before his in-game model released and became more well known after it was revealed by Yae Miko that Scaramouche's powers were unsealed by a researcher within the Fatui, which fans correctly assumed to be Dottore. It later on gained more traction as the artifact set detailing Scaramouche’s past hinted at him copying the words and mannerisms of Dottore. Fans of this pairing before the Sumeru region release depicted the two characters to be equals or at least have a somewhat mutual understanding with one another, appealing to the partners in crime trope.
Today it is a somewhat controversial ship in the fandom, as it involves two very divisive characters who have a complicated relationship and past. Most shippers are drawn to it because of its complicated nature. A common appeal may be the the power struggle between the two characters and how they both gained things from each other during their time together within the Fatui. Often the shippers joke about the Sumeru Archon Quests being the two's "divorce arc.”
Dottoscara currently has 700+ works on AO3.

Trivia[]
- According to Wanderer's Character Story 4, Scaramouche's puppet body served as a source of inspiration for the creation of Dottore's segments, with Scaramouche being his muse during the years Dottore had him around his lab for his research project.
- According to the lore in the artifact set Husk of Opulent Dreams, Scaramouche began to mimic Dottore's manner of speech (including phrases and tone) during their time together, and he also suspects that Dottore may have given him the ability to dream.
