“So you're a Gym Challenger, too? Team Yell, was it? Pretty impressive that you already have a set of fans to call your own!”
— Hop talking to Marnie for the first time

DoubleSweetRivalShipping is the het ship between Hop and Marnie from the Pokémon fandom.

Canon[]

Pokémon Sword and Shield[]

Hop is first implied to have encountered Marnie at the Motostoke Stadium. When he and the player walk inside, he takes a look around, possibly catching sight of her. He then notes excitedly to the player that the place is jam-packed with trainers and that he considers each a rival. This would implicate Marnie as well. Marnie, however, seems too focused on Morpeko to notice him at first.

Hop and Marnie have their proper first meeting at the Budew Drop Inn in Motostoke. Hop and the player are there due to Sonia having purchased rooms for them. However, the two are unable to check into the hotel as members of Team Yell are blocking the reception desk. They tell the player that they'll stop anyone who tries to get in the way of them cheering for a certain Gym Challenger. Hop rushes in to the scene, and he and the player have a double battle with Team Yell to ward them off. Marnie then accosts a guilty Team Yell and tells them to show some restraint. She lowers her head and apologizes to Hop and the player for their actions as well as explaining that they're overzealous fans of hers.

Marnie orders the members of Team Yell to go back home. Once they're gone, she apologizes to Hop and the player once again. Hop responds to this by giving Marnie a large, friendly smile. He recognizes her as a Gym Challenger and calls her impressive for having her own following. Marnie has a stunned expression for a moment before wordlessly showing him a small smile of her own.

When Marnie greets the player another morning at the same inn, she informs them that Hop has already run off to the next gym challenge. This implies that the two ran into each other before the player got up.

They encounter each other again briefly on the player and Hop's journey to Rose Tower. When Oleana shows up to announce no one will interfere with Chairman Rose's schemes, Piers, Marnie, and Team Yell all go against her. Hop and Marnie don't speak to each other directly, though Hop indirectly compliments her by calling their involvement brilliant.

Hop and Marnie at Wyndon Station

Later, Hop and Marnie are revealed to have gone to the Wyndon Station together. They have a non-verbal interaction at this point. Hop is smiling as they face the four league staff members working with Rosa. However, Marnie shakes her head as if to tell them this isn't something they can win. This causes Hop to punch the air out of frustration and helplessness. Piers arrives with the player just in time. He creates a diversion by singing in the station. His fans create a stampede in their rush to hear his singing, allowing Hop and the player to move forth. As they approach the doors, Marnie runs up to Hop and joins them. The two ask the player what to do next, and they agree to march forth. Piers sticks around to defend them, and Marnie decides to stay with him to keep him in check rather than going with Hop and the player. At the top of Rose Tower, Hop mentions the people who helped him and the player get to where they were, with Marnie being one of them.

Hop and Marnie have more interactions in the post-game during the Galarian Star Tournament. It is possible for the two to battle together against the player. If this happens, Hop will warn them that their old rivals are coming after them, and Marnie will warn them about how she plans to exact her frustrations against them for her losses. When the two battle against each other, Marnie taunts Hop by telling him to brush up on battles if he intends to become a pokemon professor. Hop replies with confidence that she's right and that he'll become a professor that's on even footing with Gym Leaders.

Hop and Marnie watching Leon, Gloria, and Victor

During the Legendary Adventure chapter titled Howling Shield of Eternity, Eternatus poses a threat to the Pasio region in its attempt to absorb energy. Hop goes in A Massive Impact to help out. He's concerned due to Kris and Bianca being inexperienced in Dynamaxing. However, Piers and Marnie arrive just in time. Hop is shocked to see that the two of them are on Pasio. Marnie reassures him that he doesn't have to worry as the two of them will help him out. Later, in Bonds of Eternity, Hop assures Leon that his group is fine as Piers and Marnie arrived to help them out.

Marnie complimenting Hop

In a conversation between Bede, Hop, and Marnie during the Neo Champions event, Hop will grow upset at Bede after he insults him. This causes Marnie to tell them to settle down and set a good example. In the Fight for the Future story, Hop and Marnie are standing together in a crowd in the Challengers Assemble chapter. They watch as Leon, Gloria, and Victor announce that the Neo Champion challenge will involve the three of them being battled. Hop will mutter Leon's nickname while Marnie mutters the names of Gloria and Victor. The next day, Hop and Marnie battle with their Galarian Zapdos and Galarian Moltres respectively. Hop winds up winning the battle. Hop compliments the teamwork between Marnie and Moltres. She smiles as she compliments Hop and Zapdos instead. They ponder on who their third member will be. Hop is surprised as he assumed Marnie would invite Piers. Marnie reveals that Piers already joined Raihan's team with Gordie. They discuss the different teams as well as Gloria and Victor being the judges before Hop says they should focus on finding a teammate rather than what's already been decided. Bede abruptly approaches them with Galarian Articuno and asks to join their team.

Despite Bede's high and mighty behavior in the Motley Trio, Champion Trio chapter, the Hop and Marnie doubt his grandiose claims of not finding anyone to his level. The two agree to let him be on a team with them. All three express doubts in their bond with their pokemon. Bede makes a jab at Hop, which prompts Hop to bite back. However, Marnie cuts Hop off and encourages the three of them to stay on the same page. In the chapter, The Second Neo Champion Stadium, the three formulate a plan of attack. Hop mentions Leon and Victor's battling styles and how to work around it. Marnie and Hop smile at each other as she compliments him on his intelligence. They challenge Leon, Gloria, and Victor later on. In the How to Beat a Champion finale, Hop, Marnie, and Bede beat them and become Neo Champions. Hop says they'll become stronger together.

Fanon[]

DoubleSweetRivalShipping is somewhat of an uncommon ship in the fandom. Despite this, it still has a fair number of followers. A large appeal of their ship comes in Hop appearing more cheerful while Marnie appears more stoic, creating an appealing contrast between the two. The two also fill in the role of being the two kind rivals of the primary rival trio of generation eight. This is likely the inspiration behind their ship name. Fanart of them is usually sweet in nature as well.

The name WyndonShipping likely stems from the two of them sharing scenes in Wyndon together. This name is quite common for them. Another, much less common name for them, CountryPunkShipping, likely stems from Hop and Marnie both being from small country towns (Postwick and Spikemuth respectively) as well as Marnie's outfit being reminiscent of punk fashion.

The romantic pairing of DoubleSweetRivalShipping is usually dwarfed in popularity by the pairing of NepotismShipping (Hop x Marnie x Bede) in a platonic sense and slightly less popular than it in a romantic sense. A minor rival ship to DoubleSweetRivalShipping is PastelGothShipping (Marnie x Bede). More major rival ships are GothGfShipping (Gloria x Marnie), PunkBladeShipping (Victor x Marnie), CheeryFairyShipping (Bede x Hop), and PostwickShipping (Gloria x Hop), all of which trump DoubleSweetRivalShipping in popularity. Fanfiction of DoubleSweetRivalShipping tends to feature them as a secondary or tertiary pairing rather than the primary one. It is also commonly shown as a beta couple to DressedinPinkShipping (Gloria x Bede).

Trivia[]

  • A major character trait of Marnie's is that she has difficulties with smiling. However, the first smile the player sees of her is shown when Hop compliments her during their first meeting. This is notably before her troubles with smiling are introduced.
    • She also smiles at Hop without effort in Pokémon Masters EX.
  • They both have older brothers who are around the same age and happen to be friends with each other.
  • Despite the two being acquainted with each other in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Hop only ever says her name once. Meanwhile, Marnie never says Hop's name in the game at all. This is not the case in Pokémon Masters EX.
