Darkwing Duck[]
In the original Darkwing Duck series, Drake Mallard is the rather egotistical self-proclaimed defender of the city of Saint Canard. Initially a solo hero, he changes his ways and starts changing for the better after meeting Gosalyn, a spirited orphan, and Launchpad McQuack, a simple-minded but goodnatured pilot. With Gosalyn as his adopted daughter and Launchpad as his live-in sidekick, Drake must balance his crime-fighting duties with the obligations of being a single dad. No easy task, especially when Gosalyn insists on accompanying Darkwing Duck on many of his adventures despite Drake’s vehement protests.

In the DuckTales reboot, Drake Mallard is a former actor who grew up idolizing Darkwing Duck, the hero of an in-universe television series. As an adult, Drake became president of the Darkwing Duck fan club and was even cast in the role of his hero for the film Darkwing: First Darkness. Unfortunately, he soon found out the wisdom in the old saying about not meeting your heroes, as original Darkwing actor Jim Starling proved to be a jaded actor disinterested in his fans. Worse, upon learning that he had been replaced as Darkwing, Starling launched a psychotic campaign to hijack the film and reclaim the role of Darkwing for himself.
Drake was forced, with the aid of fellow Darkwing fan and new friend Launchpad McQuack, to confront Starling. The clash resulted in Starling’s apparent demise and the cancellation of Drake’s movie. Launchpad then suggested that Drake honor the character Starling had played and which had inspired him by becoming a real-life Darkwing Duck. Drake went for the idea, and would eventually be joined in his crime-fighting efforts by not only Launchpad, but a tough youngster named Gosalyn.
