History[]

Durin and Dvalin’s relationship is known almost entirely from lore texts, weapons, and artifacts, as the two never interact directly on-screen. Dvalin, the Anemo elemental dragon and the Dragon of the East among Mondstadt’s Four Winds, had served as the Anemo Archon Barbatos’ companion for nearly 2000 years before the Cataclysm. Durin, meanwhile, was a shadow dragon created by the alchemist Rhinedottir (“Gold”) in Khaenri’ah and was considered one of her miraculous creations.[2] Five hundred years ago, during the Cataclysm, Durin emerged in Mondstadt causing massive destruction—unaware that he was harming anyone, as he genuinely believed that his poisonous blood was a “great blessing” and imagined himself befriending the people of Mondstadt. When Barbatos answered the pleas of his people, he summoned Dvalin to confront Durin in battle.[3]

Their only interaction occurs through this encounter and Durin’s dying dream, preserved in a weapon lore, which gives the clearest and most detailed information of how Durin perceived Dvalin. In that dream, Durin believed he was journeying alongside gentle people and dancing in the skies with “a dragon as beauteous as a jewel,” describing Dvalin further as a “bejeweled, lovely dragon, like a tender lover.”[4] To Durin, the conflict appeared not as a battle but as part of a long, joyful dream of singing and dancing with Dvalin, Barbatos, and the people of Mondstadt, entirely unaware that he was actually laying waste to the region. When he finally opened his eyes, he realized that Dvalin had pierced his neck, killing blow. Even so, Durin held no ill will toward Dvalin and Barbatos; instead, he only wished that they could have met under better circumstances where they could sing and dance together.[5]

After the battle, Durin’s corpse fell on Dragonspine (previously known as Vindagnyr), leaving behind toxic blood and residual life-force that shaped the region’s environment. Dvalin, meanwhile, ingested Durin’s poisonous blood and suffered from its Abyssal corruption for centuries, eventually becoming vulnerable to the Abyss Order’s manipulation and earning the name “Stormterror” until he was later restored.[6]

Dvalin“...”
Venti“But the moment hasn't come, at least not yet. In any case, the story should have a better ending this time, don't you think?”

Fanon[]

Duvalin is considered a rarepair in the Genshin Impact fandom because the interactions between Durin and Dvalin exist almost entirely in weapon and item lore rather than in on-screen gameplay. Many fans see their relationship as plantonic, while others ship them romantically due to the way Durin describes Dvalin in his final dream—even referring to him as “a tender lover.” Some people find the pairing unusual because Dvalin is significantly older than Durin, but supporters point out that Durin’s feelings can also be read as pure admiration and affection rather than romantic intent, aligning with his canonically gentle nature and desire to befriend Dvalin and the people of Mondstadt.

Since Durin genuinely believed he was bringing blessings rather than destruction, he was unaware of the harm he caused. Dvalin ultimately killed him in battle to protect Mondstadt, yet even after learning the truth, Durin felt no anger or resentment. Instead, his final thoughts expressed hope that they could have met in better circumstances. Because of this, many fans view their relationship as tragic and “doomed from the start.”

This sense of tragedy is reinforced by the events in Simulanka, where another Durin was created by the mage Andersdotter, also known by her codename “M,” this other Durin was created to be a parallel to the original Durin. Through the efforts of the Traveler (Aether/Lumine) and Albedo’s alchemy, the Simulanka Durin eventually gained a human form, with the Dragonspine Durin’s heart becoming part of him—effectively merging the two. Even though this new human Durin now exists and carries more agency than the original Dragonspine Durin, many fans still hope that he will one day meet Venti and Dvalin, creating a bittersweet continuation of the bond that never had the chance to form in their original lives.

Trivia[]

  • When the Traveler purified Dvalin's tear, its red color turned into blue. This parallels the moment when Wanderer gently reassures Durin, the Simulanka Dragon, saying, "It's alright now," as the dragon's red eyes shift to blue.
