Hundreds of years ago, Ei and Chiyo were more than just battle allies–they were close friends, standing side by side with Sasayuri and Kitsune Saiguu, who Ei and Chiyo were mostly depicted alongside. Among them, Ei and Chiyo were especially inseperable, their bond strengthened through countless battles.
Chiyo once fought with Ei against the dark forces of Inazuma. However, in one of her battles, she was swallowed by a "beast of sin," its darkness tainting her. Though she managed to tear the beast to pieces while inside its stomach, Chiyo was forever corrupted by its corrosion. She suffered extreme hallucionations, seeing all those around her as her enemies or as those who were slaughtered during the cataclysm.
In such a state, Chiyo was under the belief that her family and friends were enemies, and murdered them before she fled to Mt. Yougou, where she drew her blade against Ei. Ei used the Musou no Hitotachi to strike Chiyo down, severing Mt. Yougou in the process, and she left Chiyo with a severed arm and horn. Since Chiyo was no longer alive, Ei was able to let her sleep in peace.
Chiyo's Nightmares[]
Something interesting to note is that in Chiyo's nightmares, she witnessed the horrific event of Ei getted slaughtered by a monstrous creature. Upon seeing this hallucionation, Chiyo desperately reached her hand out to "pull" Ei away from the beast. Chiyo's biggest fear and nightmare was Ei getting hurt or possibly even dying. This shows her deep affection and loyalty to Raiden Ei, and it proves also the fact that Ei and Chiyo have a close bond with each other compared to the rest of Ei and/or Chiyo and the rest of their friends.
Fanon[]
EiChiyo is a rarepair in the Genshin Impact fandom, often overshadowed by more prominent ships like EiMiko. However, those who ship EiChiyo are captivated by the deep emotional bond the two shared and the immense tragedy that ultimately tore them apart. Their relationship is often romanticized as a story of love lost to time, tainted by corruption and sorrow.
In fanon interpretations, Chiyo and Ei are depicted as more than just comrades—they’re portrayed as soulmates bound by battle, loyalty, and unspoken affection. Many works explore the "what ifs" of their relationship: What if Chiyo had never been corrupted? What if Ei had saved her in time? These fanfics and artworks often reimagine their story with alternate endings where they escape their tragic fate, or delve into angst-heavy narratives where Ei is haunted by the memory of the friend—and possibly the love—she was forced to strike down.
Fans like to imagine that even after Chiyo’s fall, Ei mourned her deeply and kept her memory close. Some fanworks explore the idea that Ei visits Mt. Yougou in secret, whispering apologies or reminiscing about the times they shared. Others envision Chiyo watching over Ei in her nightmares, the remnants of her corrupted soul still clinging to the bond they once had.
Despite being a rarepair, EiChiyo is cherished for its raw emotional depth, tragic beauty, and the timeless theme of love enduring even through loss and madness.
