The Female Titan arc[]
The first time they met, Hange and Mike Zacharias are assigned to take Eren to his court hearing in front of the leaders of the Military. Hange tenderly smiles at him as they apologize for keeping him waiting in the cellar he was in. Hange is present with the rest of the Survey Corps as Eren goes to court, and they give him encouraging words beforehand. After the tribunal is over, Hange checks on his condition, noting that Eren's lost tooth grew back.
Later, when Eren and the Special Operations Squad are at the former Survey Corps Headquarters, Hange explains that they are in charge of experimenting with captured Titans Sonny and Bean and begins to prep Eren on previous experiments, but noting his enthusiasm to learn, they end up talking until morning. Eren listens to their every word, to point of having eye bags the next morning since he stayed up all night listening to them talk enthusiastically.
Hange later moves forward with the experiments on Eren. When it turns out Eren cannot turn into a Titan at will, Hange is a little disheartened. However, seeing Eren's Titan hand later on earned an overly-excited response from Hange and breaks the tension between Eren and the Special Operations Squad. When Hange excitedly runs to Eren and touches his Titan arm, Hange burns their own hands on the exposed muscle. When Hange finds a teaspoon being clutched by Eren's Titan arm, they conclude that Eren's Titan powers are only awakened when he has a clear objective in mind, such as defending his friends from a cannon. Hange also hypothesized that this switch must have a good reason as well as being connected to the Titan's nature.
Clash of the Titans arc[]
After the Titans are sighted in Wall Rose, Hange is seen on a carriage with Eren, alongside Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, Levi Ackerman, and Pastor Nick. When Armin questions the reasoning for Nick being there, Hange explains that Nick and the Church of the Walls are keeping secrets about the Titans within the Wall. When Eren lashes out at him, Hange explains that Nick is now considering talking, so he is going to see what the effects of the current situation are doing to the people and Hange explains that he is probably keeping quiet because there is a motive greater than saving humanity. Hange then suggests using Eren's Titan hardening abilities to seal the hole in the wall. And although they consider it a difficult issue, Hange asks Eren if he thinks he can do it, to what Eren firmly replies that he will do it because he has to.
After Utgard Castle falls, Hange and their squad come to save and evacuate the reaming soldiers. When Reiner Braun reveals to Eren that he and Bertolt Hoover are the Colossus and Armored Titans, Eren has a flashback to Hange briefing them on two suspects of Colossus and Armored Titan identities. Hange explains that Reiner and Bertolt came from the same area as Annie and that they were on the right flank of the expedition where Annie appeared as The Female Titan, asking Eren and his friends what aer their thoughts on that. When everyone dismisses them being affiliated with her, Armin recalls that Reiner drew out Eren's location from him and probably wrote it on Annie's hand when she captured him. Hange then states that they are not to know that they are suspected.

Hange blushing at Eren
After the transformation of the Colossus and Armored Titans, Hange directs soldiers fighting the Colossus atop the Wall while Eren, transformed, fights the Armored on the ground. Hange leads an effort to back up Eren in his battle against the Armored Titan, and strategizes with Eren after jumping on his shoulder and tells him to break Reiner's legs. Hange then remembers history concerning armor and how knights needed to be able to move. Hange is able to accurately deduct that the seemingly-invulnerable Armored Titan has unprotected areas at the joints to allow freedom of movement. This allows Eren and Mikasa to bring him down.
Royal Goverment arc[]
Hange is later seen performing experiments on Eren's Titan. Hange and Mikasa try to free him from the Titan, but find that his body has begun to fuse to it. Hange asks Moblit Berner to make a sketch of it as Mikasa cuts Eren out, and declares the experiment to be over. After Eren regains consciousness, Hange explains to him the details of the experiment, keeping their kindness and compassion to Eren intact as always. Initially, Eren had control of his Titan and was able to respond to commands, but soon, for no apparent reason, Eren seemed to become pained, and wrote on the ground "my father...to me," a message which intrigues Hange. Despite these failures, when Hange sees that Eren begins to worry, they express optimism that they will be able to get useful information about Eren's versatility and limitations.
Some time later, the Survey Corps begin to conspire to rebel against the monarchy and discover the secrets they are willing to kill for. When Sannes is captured by the Survey Corps, Hange interrogates him. After Sannes' confession, Hange, deeply affected by it, leaves the dungeon and enters a room, violently kicking over a table. Eren finds Hange, and concerned for them, he asks if there's something wrong. After awkwardly staring at him for a moment, Hange lies and says that they encountered a cockroach. Eren, instead of being weird out for the mess or outburst, simply shares with them a recollection of Bertolt and Ymir's conversation, which shocks Hange enough that they rush off the place.
Out of breath upon arriving at headquarters, Hange collapses on the ground before Erwin and warns him that their plans may be ruined. Eren's notes lead Hange to theorize that Titans can absorb the powers of their victims, which allowed Ymir to go from an ordinary Titan to a human with the power of the Titans after devouring one. Hange states that Reiner most likely threw Titans at the soldiers in hopes of Eren being devoured, creating a new holder of the Coordinate. In the same fashion, Hange believes that the Reiss family are going to feed Eren to a Titan in order to pass the Coordinate on to someone they can control. This information is vital later on to find Eren and Historia at the Reiss Chapel, thus saving them. Later on, Hange and Eren prove once again what a great team they are when destroying Rod's Titan, Eren transforms and grabs the haul of gunpowder Hange brought, using it to blow apart Rod's head.
Two months after Historia's coronation, Hange is actively engaged in running tests on Eren's Titan hardening ability in preparation for their journey to Wall Maria. In Trost District, a soldier lures a Titan into Hange's invention the Executioner from Hell as its creator watches. As it crushes and kills a Titan, Hange cheers and rejoices in the success of the invention. Immediately, Hange turns to Eren to celebrate with him, but stops after seeing Eren's nosebleed. Visibly concern for Eren, Hange approaches him and apologizes for overworking him to this point. Eren, instead of getting angry or resentful at Hange, quicly reassures them that there's no need to say that just because he's a bit tired, and that now thanks to their experiments they can have a great weapon, congratulating Hanji and his achievements. Later at dinner, Eren remembers the private conversation he had with Hange, explaining that Ymir was actually a Titan that wandered around outside the Walls.
Return to Shiganshina arc[]
Hange accompanies Eren to inquire with Instructor Shadis about his involvement with Dr. Yeager. On the way to Shiganshina, the soldiers come across a Titan near dawn. Hange quickly protects Eren and his friends, until they realized that the Titan poses no threat and so they relax. After Eren succeeds in sealing the outer hole in Wall Maria, encountering the Armored Titan, Eren transforms and draws Reiner into a fight. And this is when Hange and Eren show what a great team they are once again, because, meanwhile Hange and the soldiers under them prepare to fight Reiner with their new weapons. Eren maneuvers Reiner into a spot where he can be attacked, and Hange and Mikasa take out his eyes with their spears, as other soldiers strike his nape. Hange then orders another round of spears to be used on his nape, and tells Mikasa that above all, they need to believe that Eren will give them the perfect opportunity. Eren, who is still fighting the Armored Titan, thinks of Hange again, and of the time they introduced the thunder spears to the Survey Corps.
Upon returning victorious to the Walls, Eren and Mikasa are placed in detention for disobeying orders from their superiors, and when Hange comes to release him they note that Eren has been talking to himself, and tells him they talked to General Zackley to get him to release Eren from jail ten days earlier. Hange has consistently shown how well they read and understand Eren, and this can be seen during the meeting Eren, Hange and the rest of the survivors of the Shiganshina mission have with the rest of the military, including the Queen. During the meeting, Eren realizes that the reason he was able to activate the Founding Titan's powers in the past was because he had physical contact with Dina Fritz, a member of the royal family. Eren chooses to withhold the revelation, reasoning that it is not the proper occasion to discuss such a controversial idea. Hange stares at him for a long time, before realizing he is starting to keep secrets from them, so they simply say "oh... I see. All right."
Marley arc[]
In the year 851, Eren works with Hange and the Survey Corps to prepare for Marleyan action against Paradis Island. Eventually, the first scouting ship arrives and Eren uses his Titan form to pick it up and beach it on the shoreline. Over the next three years, Marley sends a total of 32 scouting ships to Paradis Island, all of which are destroyed by Eren and Armin. Another year passes and Hange, Eren and the Survey Corps meet with an ambassador from the nation of Hizuru named Kiyomi Azumabito. Before the meeting Hange is seen once again staring at Eren and concerned for him. During the meeting, when Eren hears that one of the three paths of action would involve Historia succeeding Zeke as the Beast Titan, he stands up and declares he refuses to accept the plan. And Hange, once again, stares at him for a very long time.
Some time later, during the Survey Corps' attack to Marley, Hange takes command of the airship functioning as the Corps getaway vehicle. There, Hange meets Eren for the first time in a long time, and when Eren says they have bought themselves some time by destroying the leaders of the Marley army and their naval ports, Hange says that his actions have made the entirety of Paradis Island a target to the rest of the world. Hange reprimands Eren for deciding to use himself as bait again, forcing the Survey Corps to come to save him once more. Hange is losing the deep trust they had in Eren and as a result, they say that the Corps has lost their trust in him.
After returning to Paradis, Eren is taken to a cell underground in accordance with his arrest, and Hange goes to visit him in his cell and hears him talking to himself. Hange tries to get him to open up by reminding him of the first time they met, but Eren is not in the mood. Although Eren had insisted that there is a better alternative to Zeke's plan to maintain the "Rumbling" by having Historia bear as many royal-blooded children as possible, Hange states that no other option has presented itself. Hange asks him if he no longer cared about Historia, considering all the trouble he has caused by acting independently of the Survey Corps. Eren does not answer, and instead threatens Hange by grabbing them through the bars, saying that if there is another way they should tell him. Hange pulls free and leaves the prison, calling Eren a rebellious idiot. Outside, Hange laments that being made commander was Erwin's only mistake before he died.
From then on, their relationship just deteriores even further.
War for Paradis arc[]
As Hange is working, Eren announces the start of the Rumbling to all Eldian people through the Paths, much to Hange's horror. Later on, Hange sneaks into Shiganshina and contacts Jean and Mikasa. Hange informs the two of the plan to join forces with Marley to stop Eren and asks that they also take part. Although Mikasa agrees, Jean is hesitant. Hange tries to argue that even if Eren is stopped, his threat will stave off any attacks on Paradis for a number of years and give them more time to broker peace with the outside world. Jean's continued objections cause Hange to become angry and scream their objection that genocide is wrong. Hange admits that their refusal to act is what forced Eren's hand.
Fanon[]
EreHan is considered a rare pair for Eren and Hange. While some prefer to ship the two romantically, others fans like the mentor/mentee dynamic the two share, as well as the trust they both seem to have in one another. After the events in the prison cellar, many fans of the ship started being dissapointed at the way Eren lashed out on Hange, as this scene represented a big breaking point for their relationship. Their relationship went from one where they took care of each other, had trust in each other and even shared late night private talks, to one where they hid things from each other, distrusted each other and even involved violence in their interactions.
One of the most beloved scenes by the fans of the ship is the one where Hange blushes at Eren while both of them work as a team to attack the Armored Titan.
