Evris x Ciel is the femslash ship between Evris Bradley and Ciel Alphard from the The Engagement of the Disgraced Witch and the Cross-Dressing Princess fandom.
Canon[]
Evris and Ciel first meet while Evris is on her way to her ex-fiance for possible employment after she is close to being disinherited by her family. The wheel of Ciel’s coach had gotten stuck in the road, and so using her dark magic, Evris lifts the wheel out and frees the coach. Ciel thanks her, to which Evris replies that she was just doing her duty as a noble and then warns Ciel to not get too close to her due to the negative rumors surrounding Evris. In contrast to the whispering people around them speaking anxiously about Evris being a “witch” however, Ciel gets excited. She launches herself at Evris for introductions and invites the latter to come with her before being dragged away by her maid.
Not long after, at her ex-fiance’s place, Evris unknowingly encounters Ciel again, but this time with the latter dressed up as the crown prince of a neighboring empire. Evris notices Ciel looking at her intensely, and then Ciel surprises everyone in the room by declaring that she (as the prince) has chosen to get engaged with Evris. Evris’s ex-fiance, who had planned to make Evris his servant, objects to this and so the two have a duel over it, with Ciel winning in one strike. Evris agrees to Ciel’s offer and Evris has a breakdown after Ciel correctly deduces that Evris had been suffering from her situation.
The two arrive at Ciel’s palace, where Evris wonders to herself whether she’d made a rash decision going along with Ciel. Not long after, though, Evris hears a crash coming from Ciel’s room and rushes in, only to discover that Ciel is actually the same noblewoman from the stuck coach from before. Evris faints, then demands their engagement to be called off the next day. Ciel, however, is cheerily unworried about Evris’s reaction and explains that she’d carefully thought over her choice to select Evris as her fiancée. Ciel, now dressed as a woman again, then decides to accompany Evris on her shopping trip to buy supplies, and gradually, Evris begins to find herself having fun spending time with Ciel. Evris later learns from Ciel’s maid about Ciel’s backstory and reason for dressing as a male.
Knowing this, Evris agrees to stick by Ciel’s side, but as just friends. Their engagement is constantly called into question, however, by others who know the truth about Ciel - including Evris’s friend Lillian and Ciel’s father. Ciel quickly gains the approval of Evris’s friend but finds it harder to resist her father’s demands that she actually marry a man instead. Evris, who has grown to genuinely care about Ciel, tracks down where Ciel is meeting her would-be husband and kisses her in front of him. This snaps Ciel back to her senses and she turns down the now infuriated lord. Evris then expresses her desire to be actually engaged with Ciel, much to Ciel’s delight. Right after, however, Ciel’s father has Evris taken to him for execution. Ciel arrives just in time to save her, defying her father and openly declaring her love for Evris. At Ciel’s powerful show of light magic, Ciel’s father concedes to her wishes. Evris agrees to help Ciel research dark magic and “witches” in search of a way to bring her brother back to the empire. Later, a scholar comes along to help them and Evris acts kindly to her, which causes Ciel to get jealous. This prompts Evris to bind Ciel down with her dark magic and dote on her afterwards.
They find Ciel's estranged brother, Leo, who, after a brief fight with, approves of their relationship. Leo gets attacked, however, and Ciel and Evris team up to fight this new enemy. They defeat the summoned monsters and save the kingdom. Afterwards, they marry.
Fanon[]
Evris x Ciel is a ship that appeals to readers for being a non-isekai fantasy yuri pairing full of many typical fantasy and yuri tropes that readers enjoy but do not normally see put together. Fans especially like how all the usual plotlines related to these genres were sorted out very quickly within the first few chapters for Evris x Ciel, allowing for the relationship to grow in other ways in subsequent chapters. Conversely, other fans have criticized this story pacing, however, finding each chapter to feel very rushed, although they still find the pairing’s interactions to be enjoyable enough to keep reading more. Ciel’s dashing personality as a “prince” and clinginess as a “princess” toward Evris are seen as both charming and adorable, and fans were very happy when Evris began to reciprocate these affections by doting on Ciel in later chapters. Overall, Evris x Ciel is considered to be a cute couple, with fans pleased that the two are beginning to act more like a real couple in recent chapters.
