- Fafnir – “(Humans are either hits or misses. The misses make themselves known quickly, but it takes time to know if you've found a hit. And spending that much time on every person is bothersome. As far as I'm concerned, the misses that trespass on my home to steal my treasure are better.)”
- Takiya – “Sorry for the wait.”
- Fafnir – “(However...)”
- Takiya – “I can't wait for the event, Faf-ku—ah!”
- Fafnir – “I don't mind.”
- Takiya – “Huh?”
- Fafnir – “You're a hit.”
- Takiya – “Faf...”
- — Episode 6.
Fafkiya is the slash ship between Fafnir and Takiya Makoto from the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid fandom.
Canon[]
As with Kobayashi and Tohru's case, they're both from different species: Fafnir, who is a dragon; and Makoto, a human. Interestingly, they also parallel the former's relationship: Tohru is Kobayashi's maid; and Fafnir, Takiya's "butler", although only in appearance, but tends to regularly help Takiya with the chores. They're also living together as previously mentioned in a same building, as both roommates and gaming buddies (with Fafnir gaining an attraction to video games thanks to Takiya).
Their relationship debuts on the third episode, when Kobayashi and Tohru decide to invite their respective friends to the former's new apartment for a party. After Takiya arrives to the place, Tohru's friends also inmediately show up (with Fafnir being shown first but in his monstrous humanoid form), perplexing both Kobayashi and Takiya seeing his form for a second before Tohru convinces him to arrange himself as a human, much to his annoyance. Takiya and Kobayashi freak out after sensing a feeling of hostility coming from Fafnir towards them, specifically, the Earth, after expressing his abhorrence towards it wanting to end it since it was full of "troubles".
Eventually, he takes an interest in a video game Takiya is playing, and decides trying it too, with Takiya not minding at all as he guides him. Later that night, Takiya rants at Kobayashi over butlers, referring to Fafnir, who tried to focus on the videogame he was playing while being slapped on both of his shoulders by the drunken friends as he tells them to stop and to not screw up on the game. Takiya describes Fafnir as a "handsome but devilish" butler, trying to refute Kobayashi's past comment over them having to be middle-aged rather than young.
- Kobayashi – “Like I said! When it comes to butlers, I fancy middle-aged ones! [Fafnir] is out of question!”
- Fafnir – “Stop it! You'll make me screw up!”
- Takiya – “No, no, lately young, handsome, but devilish butlers have been pretty good in their own way!”
- Kobayashi – “Not having that wisdom of life aura means they're out! Got it!”
Unfortunately for Fafnir, he couldn't continue playing normally after his eyes were being covered over by Takiya while he tells Fafnir to avert their eyes after Kobayashi (still drunk) yelled at Tohru to strip, and once again, Fafnir tries to tell him to stop.[1]
One day, Tohru coincidentally meets Fafnir again and takes him to Kobayashi's place. Fafnir announces he was going to stay on the Earth for a while too, to which Tohru asks if he had anywhere else to stay (initially offering Kobayashi's department), and Fafnir settles between the mountains. However, this turned out to be attractive to the people of Earth, to which Tohru tells him that he shouldn't stand out, but Fafnir takes it the wrong way, misunderstanding Tohru's intentions. In the end she decides to help him find a place to stay among the humans. They both rest for a moment in a park during the sunset, while she questions if he really wanted to stay on the Earth since it would be difficult to live there without a human he got along with. At the latter thought, she suddenly has an idea and cheerfully tells Fafnir that there was a human he would be satisfied with. A scene later, the two are shown outside Takiya's apartment, the latter surprised by the dragons' visit in particular, with Makoto referring to Fafnir as "Fafnir-dono" (which is roughly an historical and formal honorific that's not used in normal situations)[2]. Faithful to her idea, Tohru requests Takiya to let Fafnir stay in his apartment for a while, to which he accepts without questioning. The maid dragon is surprised to this, partly because Fafnir is considered one of the most dangerous dragons, but on the other hand Fafnir was seemingly touched, as he nervously moves side to side in his standing position while asking Takiya about the last time (the video game he tried during the party) and what other games he had with him. Takiya invites Fafnir inside to show him his collection, with the human accepting the dragon's request to tell him about those as well. They are both seen playing afterwards.[3]
A few days later, Kobayashi, after a day at work, wonders how Takiya and Fafnir are getting along. Kanna overhears the conversation and points out that she saw Fafnir in a park, jumping and spinning in circles (due to Takiya's influence inside the otaku world). Fafnir helps Takiya with the latter's video game development. Meanwhile, at Takiya's apartment, Fafnir and Takiya are preparing for an event for one of their RPGs, which explains Fafnir's jumping around at the park.
- Takiya – "Kings!"
- Fafnir – "Rule."
- Takiya – "Citizens!"
- Fafnir – "Suck."
- Takiya – "Nyami-nyami."
- Fafnir – "Rules."
- Both – "(jumping and spinning) Kaboom!"
— Takiya and Fafnir's performance for a RPG event.
Takiya compliments Fafnir and accidentally calls him "Faf-kun", leaving Fafnir confused as to what a nickname is. After dinner, the two play a video game to determine who washes the dishes, with Fafnir losing and being forced to do the chores. After washing the dishes, Fafnir tries out Takiya's video game he has been creating for Comiket, then plays an MMO all night while Takiya sleeps, softening the rhythm of his keyboard so as not to disturb him. Before resting, Takiya gives Fafnir a hair conditioner he had bought on his way home from work, assuring it would help Fafnir's hair. The following day, Takiya and Fafnir are walking through town for some shopping. Their moment is noticed by Kobayashi and Tohru from the other side of the road, commenting on how they were getting along.
- Kobayashi – “Looks like they're getting along well.”
- Tohru – “I shouldn't say this after recommending them for each other, but Mr. Takiya's incredible. Being able to live with Mr. Fafnir.”
- — Kobayashi and Tohru's remark of Fafnir and Takiya's relationship.
Fafnir thinks to himself about people and how he dislikes having to learn whether or not specific people are hits or misses (good/bad people). Despite that, he concludes that he was glad to have met Takiya, calling him a hit and allowing him to use nicknames for him, this case, "Faf-kun".[4]
Both participate at Comiket to sell their respective books. When Kobayashi and Tohru arrive at the place, Takiya reveals that Fafnir decided to write his stuff and sell it at Comiket. However at the end of the day, while Takiya did well at the Comiket, Fafnir's book fails to sell since he was not doing very well because he is a first-timer. It is discovered that he was selling a collection of deadly curses for the absurdly low price of ¥1000.[5]
While Fafnir abhorred humans for everything they were, as the series goes by, his heart warms up to them after spending his time on the planet, especially having a company such as Makoto.

Fafnir and Takiya competing against each other
The following day after Kobayashi and Tohru's Christmas shopping, Fafnir initially dismisses the invitation to be part of Tohru's show at the retirement home, but later offers to direct The Little Match Girl by first holding auditions for the title role. Takiya is one of the spectators of the performance along with Kobayashi at the retirement home. Takiya proposes an afterparty at Kobayashi's apartment, and it's seen everyone celebrating the Christmas Party with Makoto and Fafnir competing with each other in the video game.[6]
On December 28th, there's a brief moment of the two showing Fafnir peeking and asking what Takiya was doing while he was arranging a shelf. Makoto shows the contents of it, being different types of curry, and before Fafnir could ask, Takiya chimes in saying that it's mild, Fafnir nodding in response. On December 31st, both are seen attending to the New Years festival along with the rest. Later both, Riko, Kanna, Shouta, and Georgie do some shopping at the temple store. Fafnir gets himself an evil banishing charm in hopes to do some research on new curses. Both Kobayashi and Makoto briefly talk about Makoto's experience at the Winter Comitek, which was a hit, however, Fafnir didn't have the same luck. At Kobayashi's place, they go up to the rooftop to witness the first sunrise of the year with the others. He comments about it being just a sunrise, but Makoto intervenes to inform him that the first sunrise of the year is special.[7]
On a short segment Fafnir is seen playing as usual, however it starts to rain while showing clothes hanging outside the balcony. Takiya hurriedly arrives at home not believing it was raining all of a sudden. Once he's inside, he announces his arrival, and expresses his complaint over the [weather reporter] saying there was no chance of rain. He notices the towel next to him and the neatly folded clothes that had hung outside until a few moments ago on the couch, showing that Fafnir had laid out clean clothes for him too. Fafnir asks him to join in "guerrilla warfare", and Makoto smiles moved as he responds "Coming, coming!".[8]
In the OVA Valentine's Day, Followed By Hot Springs! (Please Don't Expect Much), when Takiya returns home, Fafnir sends Takiya a "Valentine's Blade" when playing their online game. After being given that, he's reminded by himself that it was Valentines already as he slightly blushes. Fafnir is initially confused about Valentines, but moves on asking Takiya to send him the same [blade].

Limited Valentine's Blade
Makoto giggles and accepts the command. Fafnir later joins Takiya, Kobayashi, and the other dragons on a visit to a spa resort. Fafnir asks about Takiya's goal having invited everyone to the place, which Makoto explains to form a community, since he's found a group that gets along well and happened being part of it himself. Takiya also includes Fafnir inside that group, and gets a click of Fafnir's mouth as he scoffs how he hated him, however it's taken as a joke by Takiya, with this latter calling him a "tsundere", Fafnir ignoring him. Inside the resort, they compete together in a ping pong match following the lines of their RPG preparation, with the rest watching and leaving Kobayashi in confusion. At their shared room, Takiya says he'd may go for another dip, and asks Fafnir if he wanted to go too. Fafnir deadpans an of course, accepting his challenge. On the train ride home, they both sit next to each other in front of a sleeping Tohru and Kobayashi.[9]
Takiya and Fafnir visit the maid café that Tohru had been working at for only a few days. Some time later, Fafnir is locked out of the online gaming service that he plays on. Takiya notices something was wrong and worriedly calls his name, till he sees Fafnir's screen about his temporary ban, to which he bursts out: "The fate of mankind is in jeopardy!" as he hurries to follow him.[10]
Both are invited to Kobayashi's apartment by Tohru for ideas on Kobayashi's new maid outfit. Fafnir ends up proposing the exact same outfit that Takiya proposed, but is rejected.[11]
Fafnir is revealed to be the suspicious person reported by the neighborhood patrol, having been spotted by Tohru and Elma while dancing in the street. When being questioned, he explains he was practicing choreography for an event with Takiya, and couldn't do it at their room because it was too small. Fafnir muses on the cooperation between a Harmony dragon and a Chaos dragon, just before they are surrounded by a large group of delinquents.[12]
After Takiya had been stressing out over his failed attempts to get Fafnir to accommodate his parents who would be visiting because he refused to move from his computer, Fafnir lectures Takiya on how the parent-child relationship never existed between dragons until humans came along. Fafnir progresses in the game he's playing, so he offers to accommodate Takiya's parents on the condition that he is beaten in said game. They're seen competing together, Fafnir declaring Takiya he'd never be able to defeat him, however Makoto applies instakill combos, saying that weak humans will use any means necessary after Fafnir yelled at him to stop and not to use those kind of combos.[13]
Takiya gives Fafnir the idea of creating his own treasure, which leads Fafnir to ask Lucoa to model for his latest doujinshi. Takiya is surprised when he arrives at home and sees Lucoa with a sketchbook on her hands and inmediately assumes Fafnir is making another book and asks if it's coming along, and after getting a positive answer from him, he says he'll need to work hard to make it in time too for the exhibition. Once again, unfortunately, Fafnir doesn't manage to sell out any of his books, leaving him perplexed and confused of why they couldn't sell again.[14]
As both and Shouta were playing the same online game, Takiya senses that something's been bugging Shouta, and when he asks for the reason of this, the boy comments the troubles he was having regarding his Father's Day gift. Outside the game, Takiya and Fafnir look at each other in worry towards Shouta's problem. Takiya gives Shouta advice with game and developers examples, and Shouta then thanks him for it, willing to give the present another try.[15]
Takiya attends the out-of-season flower viewing with Fafnir and Shouta playing videogames between the three together, and Takiya gets distracted for a moment while explaining to Kobayashi that it was the real pleasure of these events, but gets a reprimand from Fafnir who tells him not to get distracted and that they have to work together, thus that both him and Shouta were relying on him. Kobayashi comments how he has an "incredible faith in each other" in that game. Later on, Makoto would leave Fafnir behind (who was still distracted with his video game) to "help" Kobayashi being chased by Tohru on their "wedding" ceremony that Kobayashi ultimately runs away from, with everyone, excluding Fafnir, going after both girls.[16]
In the second OVA following episode 10 from the second season, they are seen together after Chloe arrives to Tokyo for a trip, introduced by Tohru as experts of the area (referring to the place). Fafnir is annoyed when Kobayashi thanks him using his nickname "Faf", seemingly disturbed if someone else than Takiya called him with that name. Everyone head to a VR place, the only ones not joining in are Kobayashi and Takiya, happy to see them having a good time together. At the end of the day, they are seen together attending the firework party at Kobayashi's apartment rooftop, but aren't seen anymore before Chloe returns back to her hometown in Minnesota the day after.
Mini Dragon[]
- Makoto and Fafnir are playing their MMORPGs, but then a blackout occurs. To pass the time until the power returns, they try different kinds of candy in the dark and guess the correct flavor.[17]
- Fafnir has a meeting with his fellow MMORPG players in person and is shocked by whom he has been playing with all of this time. He is, however, dissatisfied by the fact that Humans are deceitful and cannot be trusted. On the other hand, Makoto calls out Fafnir's hypocrisy.[18]
Mini Dragon Specials[]
- Makoto, Shouta, and Fafnir are seen hanging together playing video games. Fafnir is jealous of Shouta's mastery at video games, and though he is offered some help by him, Fafnir turns it down, saying he didn't need handouts. Makoto teasingly tells him not to get depressed, and Fafnir tells him to shut up.[19]
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Fafnir the Recluse[]
Fafnir the Recluse is a spin-off manga series that observes the otaku lifestyle of the character Fafnir as well as his roommate, Takiya.
- Fafnir is a dark, brooding curse dragon from the same world as Tohru, Kanna, and their friends. He’s also an otaku who’s as obsessed with games, merch, and doujinshi as he is with gold, jewels, and destroying all humans. This latest spin-off from the highly popular Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid offers a peek into the timeless bromance of Fafnir and Takiya, two otaku sharing an apartment. The life of a recluse is busier than you might expect!
- —Synopsis of the spin-off series.[20]
Volume 1: Not-So-Odd Couple[]
This volume introduces Fafnir, a dark and brooding curse dragon from the same world as Tohru. He decides to live in the human world after growing fond of its otaku culture. Tohru tries to find Fafnir a place to stay, leading to an amusing incident where Fafnir attempts to pay a real estate agent with a gold nugget. Eventually, Fafnir ends up moving in with Takiya, Kobayashi's co-worker, who is a passionate otaku. The volume establishes their shared living situation and sets the tone for their quirky, reclusive lifestyle.

Volume 1 cover.
Fafnir's move into Takiya's apartment is prompted by Tohru recalling their connection from a party seen in the main series. Takiya's vast collection of games, manga, and doujinshi immediately captivates Fafnir, aligning with his dragon-like obsession with treasure, which has now shifted to otaku merchandise. Their relationship begins with a mutual love for video games. Fafnir, initially disdainful of humans, finds common ground with Takiya through gaming sessions, hinting at the start of their friendship. The volume shows Fafnir adapting to human life under Takiya's roof, freeloading while Takiya works his day job. Their interactions are marked by Fafnir's dry humor and Takiya's easygoing acceptance, such as when Fafnir takes over the apartment for his gaming marathons. They bond over shared otaku interests, with Fafnir's intensity contrasting Takiya's more laid-back enthusiasm, laying the foundation for their dynamic.
Volume 2: Fafnir Hates to Lose, But These Humans Are Giving Him a Run for His Money!![]

Volume 2 cover.
Fafnir becomes more deeply involved in his life with Takiya, embracing his reclusive yet surprisingly active lifestyle. This volume brings to light Fafnir's competitive nature and his curiosity about human hobbies beyond gaming, while Takiya continues to be his anchor in this new world. The humor in their routine is amplified by Fafnir's attempts to use curses in everyday scenarios. Fafnir immerses himself in retro games with Takiya, showcasing their shared passion, possibly introduced by Takiya, and his determination to master them reflects his dragon pride, which amuses Takiya. Joining Takiya in a playful spinning top battle with kids, including possibly Kanna and friends, turns into a serious competition for Fafnir, with Takiya's encouragement and patience balancing his intensity. Fafnir's use of curses to solve minor problems, such as fixing a game or winning a match, is gently redirected by Takiya toward more practical human methods, highlighting their differing approaches. The bond between Fafnir and Takiya strengthens as Fafnir becomes more active in Takiya’s world, helping with chores and otaku events, marking a subtle shift from freeloader to roommate.
Volume 3: Curses! Foiled Again?![]

Volume 3 cover.
Fafnir continues to live with Takiya, pursuing his desires with a dragon-like stubbornness. This volume delves into his struggles with human limitations, such as failing to beat a high score or coping with the shutdown of a favorite game, while Takiya remains a steady presence. Their nerdy camaraderie deepens despite setbacks. One instance of his struggles is when Fafnir obsesses over beating a video game high score, with Takiya offering tips or teasing him lightly, showcasing their complementary dynamic. Takiya's calm demeanor serves as a contrast to Fafnir's frustration, highlighting their unique relationship. Another challenge arises when an online game ends, leading to Fafnir's dramatic reaction which is tempered by Takiya's pragmatic support, such as suggesting a new game or distracting him with manga. The volume emphasizes their unshakable friendship, with Takiya accepting Fafnir's quirks, like his tendency to hoard game merch as treasure, while Fafnir relies on Takiya's human perspective. Small acts, like Takiya leaving snacks for Fafnir during a gaming binge, illustrate their unspoken care, blending humor with warmth.
Volume 4: A Mighty Curse Dragon Brought Low by Mortal Entertainment?![]

Volume 4 cover.
Fafnir has fully embraced the otaku lifestyle, delving into activities such as livestreaming, experimenting with cleaning techniques, and scouring flea markets for unique finds, all while taking advantage of Takiya's hospitality. Despite his best efforts, Fafnir's comical mishaps in attempting to solve problems with curses highlight his ongoing adaptation to human life, adding a lighthearted touch to their coexistence. In his foray into livestreaming, Fafnir enlists Takiya's technical assistance and support, showcasing their collaborative approach to the venture. When Fafnir undertakes cleaning experiments, often related to maintaining his prized 'treasure' collection, Takiya actively participates or aids in rectifying any mishaps caused by the curses, illustrating their effective teamwork in domestic matters. During their visit to a flea market, Fafnir's pursuit of peculiar otaku items as treasures is balanced by Takiya's guidance, preventing him from acquiring cursed artifacts and reflecting the harmonious blend of their contrasting personalities. Fafnir's humorous failed attempts at casting curses, such as trying to repair a broken controller, prompt Takiya to step in with practical solutions, reinforcing their dynamic of dragon-induced chaos versus Takiya's composed demeanor.
Fanon[]
Fafnir accepting carrying out his life between the humans in Earth after meeting Makoto and spending time with him is what made the ship bloom in first place, especially how they're also living together in the same place. The ship is most likely being view as platonic because of Takiya being practically Fafnir's first (human) friend made and because both bonding over video games with often Shouta joining them too. Considering Fafnir is still changing his view towards the humans, everyone treasures their friendship. However it hasn't stopped other fans to ship it romantically either, mainly because Fafnir considers Takiya as a "hit" (or someone he likes/a good human), and how he's acceptable towards his company. Also the valentines' blade, which although Fafnir didn't have romantic intentions because he didn't know about Valentines' Day in first place, many headcanon as Takiya seeing it as a declaration of love.
One of the reasons it also fueled the ship was when Fafnir pretend to be a girl to fool Takiya's parents into thinking that Makoto has a wife in order to keep them away so they could have more time to play video games together. The next comment Kobayashi does also helps to the ship: "Oh, so you found someone to marry then!!"[21] It shows that Fafnir doesn't have a problem posing as Takiya's girlfriend, which is something tender considering the massive change Makoto did to Fafnir when he's been adapting himself into the human world.
It's considered being a parallel to Kobayashi and Tohru's relationship, but slash version, especially considering that both Tohru and Fafnir are their humans' maid and butler respectively. Since it's common because both are one of the major male cast on appearing aside from Shouta, other pairings included that can be shipped along with are Kanna/Saikawa and the so mentioned Kobayashi/Tohru. It's also appealing due to its potential despite having met for a short time and already living together on the same room.
On AO3, it's the most written ship for both and it's second placed just right behind the main pairing of the series with 78+ works created currently as romantic and 32 as platonic. There are no current rivals aside from Takiya x Kobayashi, but this latter is rather treated as bromantic, as Kobayashi is canonically dating Tohru, and both Takiya and Kobayashi have a prevailed long friendship as drinking buddies and co-workers.
