Famous Combo is the friendship between Mario and Yoshi from the Super Mario fandom.

In Super Mario World, while on a vacation to Dinosaur Land, Mario happened to find an egg trapped inside a block, hatching a fully-grown dinosaur named Yoshi. Yoshi explains to Mario that Bowser used magic to trap him inside that egg, grateful for Mario rescuing him, Yoshi allowed him to climb on his back. Yoshi is then a companion to Mario for the rest of the game, assisting him in rescuing the other Yoshis who were also turned into eggs and given to the Koopalings by Bowser to watch over them. Whilst riding Yoshi, Mario can command him to use his tongue to swallow enemies and spit them out again in certain cases. He can also jump off of Yoshi for an extra jump should the situation call for it. A skilled player can play the entire game while riding on Yoshi, who will always be by Mario's side, except for ghost houses and castles. In those cases, he will wait outside for Mario to come back. After defeating Bowser, Mario will tell Yoshi to carry the princess back to his home, where they will take the seven eggs to be hatched and celebrate their victory.

In Super Mario 64, Yoshi has a cameo on the roof of Peach's Castle, which can (normally) only be accessed via cannon when collecting all 120 stars. Yoshi is very happy to see Mario again and gives him a message from the developers congratulating him for finishing the game. He then fills up Mario's extra-lives to the brim and improves his jumping ability, before making his exit by jumping into the waterfall.

In the DS remake/sequel, Yoshi is promoted to the starting player character, once again sleeping on the roof while Mario and his friends were invited by Princess Peach for cake, unaware that Bowser had taken over the castle and trapped the heroes one-by-one. A friendly Lakitu then wakes Yoshi up, telling him that an eerie amount of time had passed since Mario and the others had entered the castle, alarming Yoshi. He finds a hidden key to the castle and then sets out to rescue Mario (and Luigi and Wario for 100% completion), freeing Mario allows him to rescue Peach.

After only being relegated to cameos in the New Super Mario Bros series, its Wii title would put Yoshi back into the forefront, giving him a similar role as he had in Super Mario World, however with the limitation that he can only be used in certain levels. With each playable character having a Yoshi with a designated color, Mario's yoshi is the classic green.

Yoshi quickly became one of the most popular characters in the series upon his debut and established himself as a mainstay after only two appearances. His friendship with Mario is rarely in focus in fanwork, he's generally depicted as a loyal companion and occasional pet of Mario.

One of the sticking points that got referenced for years was Mario's ability to let Yoshi fall into the abyss in Super Mario World, which (along with misinterpreting the sprite of Mario pointing for Yoshi to eat an enemy as Mario punching Yoshi) was commonly used fodder in "Mario is evil" theories. More sympathetic and (decidedly more tragic) portrayals of said scenario instead interpret Yoshi as being willing to sacrifice himself for Mario, knowing that they're not going to make that jump otherwise.
