Port Mafia Arc[]
Atsushi and Kyouka's first meet.
In episode 8 (Chapter 7), Atsushi and Kyouka first meet as Atsushi accompanies Yosano on her shopping trip. He spots Kyouka in the crowd for the first time. They walk past each other and both start feeling something special. They both turn back and make eye contact with each other. At one point, Kyouka turns around towards the road again, but Atsushi still keeps his eyes on Kyouka. Forgetting about everything but her, Atsushi accidentally runs into a man and falls with boxes.
Later, they meet again on the train is hijacked by Motojiro Kaji. Atsushi though she is a civilian. asks her to leave the carriage that has the bomb. However, he then finds out from the conversation that she is a member of the Port Mafia they begin to fight. Kyouka starts introducing herself as an orphan like him, listing her likes and dislikes, and confessing to her 35 murders within six months.
At one point, Kyouka shows him the bomb which is on her chest and Atsushi is shocked by the scene. He says that he doesn't feel emotions in her words and it seems like she doesn't have one. However, after Atsushi urges her to express herself, she wavers. She gives Atsushi the detonator to deactivate the bomb, but it is remotely force-activated after Akutagawa notices the button was pushed
Atsushi saves Kyouka.
Atsushi tries to defuse the bomb but Kyouka tells him that there's no time to stop it and pushes Atsushi away from herself to not hurt him. Finally breaking from Port Mafia's influence and crying, she attempts to sacrifice herself by jumping off the train with the bomb. Atsushi screams, jumping out of the train and falling close to Kyouka before ripping the bomb off her and hugging her from the blast before the two fall into the river.
Atsushi fell asleep on Kyouka's knees.
Atsushi pulls Kyouka and himself out of the river, smiling once Kyouka coughs and recovers. Kyouka sits up, looking over to Atsushi smiling at her, and mumbling an erm before Atsushi passes out, collapsing onto her. She looks at him in surprise, forgetting about everything and ignoring the ringing of the phone.
Afterward, they are both taken back to the agency to be treated. Kyouka is then questioned but insists she will only release intel on the Port Mafia if they take her to eat steamed tofu which Atsushi agrees to, but later comes to regret because of the price of the specific restaurant Kyouka wants to visit. After this, Kunikida strongly advises Atsushi to turn her in to the Military Police in private, but Atsushi is very reluctant and decides instead to take her out on a "date".

He visibly blushes and stutters after he realizes what he has proposed, but she agrees anyway. The two are seen enjoying themselves all over the city, and Kyouka seems to lose her formerly aloof manner and even drags Atsushi to a crepe stand. However, their "date" ends as Kyouka takes them to the final stop on their date. The Military Police Station where she intends to turn herself in.

Just as Kyoyka is about to turn herself in, Atsushi is stabbed in the chest by Akutagawa, causing Kyouka’s immediate shock. The Port Mafia then kidnaps Kyouka and Atsushi, bringing them to a barge ship. On the ship, they are held captive as Akutagawa aims to kill Atsushi, and Kyouka unsuccessfully tries to save him but she ends up in a chokehold.

Instead of giving in, however, Kyouka says how she enjoyed her time together with Atsushi and how the crepes were good, leaving Atsushi shocked. Kunikida eventually shows up and Atsushi is given the chance to escape on his own, but he is determined to save Kyouka, much to Kunikida’s protest. Atsushi goes back and saves Kyouka, and the two escape together.
Afterwards, as Atsushi goes back to the office, he worries if the others will accept Kyoyka only to walk to find that she is dressed up in a maid costume with the rest all around her fawning over her. Kyouka soon pleads to join the Agency so she can "prove to herself that she could do more than kill," and after hearing this Atsushi backs up her claim, and the President allows it.
The Guild Arc[]
Atsushi is shocked by seeing Kyouka in his room.
One day, Atsushi wakes up in his dorm and smelled the food Kyouka made for him. He then finds out Dazai set Kyouka up as Atsushi's new roommate to "protect her" since it's his job. Atsushi then accepts the offer. Long after Atsushi and Tanizaki's run-in, Kyōka rushes to Atsushi and hugs him in relief, but then trembles in fear at the sight of the Port Mafia's boss, making Atsushi very worried
The next day, when Kyouka has her first assignment, she asks him about using her seduction technique and revealing her legs, which makes Atsushi blush very hard and reject her idea. In the end, she fails miserably, Atsushi attempts to cheer her up and buys her a crepe. He also mentions how she might use her supernatural gift in the future which she is very startled by. The two are interrupted by a Port Mafia member and Kyouka's former superior Ozaki Kouyou, who tells Kyouka that she needs to come back to Port Mafia. Kyouka refuses and tries to fight back, but is quickly bested. Then Kouyou starts to talk about how important Atsushi is to Kyouka, and threatens to kill him.
- “She has been blinded by the light. It is a light you showed her. But fortunately, all is not lost. I doubt Kyouka would want to stay if the Agency no longer has you, even more so if he is killed because of her.”

Terrified, Kyouka agrees to join Kouyou but later tries to stab her. When reinforcements from the Port Mafia, Armed Detective Agency, and Guild arrive, she escapes in the crossfire. Kyouka isn't seen again for a while until she shows up to save Atsushi who is attacked by the Guild leader. She tries to protect Atsushi who is injured, but then she fails and Atsushi is hostage by the Guild.

Impotent looking The Guild, Kyouka kneels to the ground, desperate and crying. Kyouka feels as though she can't save anything and only kills, and does little to escape or help save the city from destruction until eventually, Dazai convinces her to help. Unable to stop the ship from crashing into the city Atsushi grows desperate, and then he hears Kyouka's voice.
She tells him she can set up a drone to destroy the ship before it crashes into the city, and that she will not be able to escape with them as she is chained up. Atsushi tries to come up with a different plan but time is up and the survivors are all hurled out of the ship on parachutes, and Kyouka crashes into the Moby Dick. Atsushi screams out in agony, believing her dead, leaving Atsushi very distressed. Only later does he find out from Dazai and Fukuzawa that Kyouka was able to escape after she passed the entrance exam by sacrificing herself. She arrives on land and Atsushi runs and embraces her.
Kyouka is later accompanied by Atsushi to the Agency office, where the Agency welcomes its newest member. It makes Atsushi smile a lot when he sees Kyouka happy like that.
Dead Apple[]
Atsushi and Kyouka are both asleep in their dorm, both dreaming of their abilities and a strange fog. Kyouka wakes Atsushi and asks him if he is okay because he sounds like having a bad dream. Kyouka suddenly stormed the cabinet where Atsushi was sleeping right now cause he gave her the bedroom, which made him blush very hard since her face was close to him and they were wearing pajamas. Atsushi then knows they both see a fog in their dream and exit the dorm to see all of Yokohama covered in a thick fog. They meet up with Kunikida, who explains the situation and tells them to go find the man who caused all this, Shibusawa.
Throughout the whole movie, Kyouka always looks after and protects him from danger. When he opens up about his past and his relationship with his ability to her, she tells him hers. She then hugs him and pushes him out of the car, tries to fight her ability on her own, and asks him to run. The two encounter Akutagawa, and soon have to face off on their own against their abilities to reclaim them. When Kyouka is about to be killed, Atsushi blocks her ability to attack and helps Kyouka defeat her ability. Atsushi, however, is still unable to use his ability despite defeating his ability, so Kyouka and Akutagawa decide to face Shibusawa on their own.
During the fight, Shibusawa kicks Akutagwa away, but right before Shibusawa tries to attack Kyouka after throwing her ability away, Atsushi regains his ability and saves her by blocking Shibusawa's attack. The three start fighting Shibusawa alone with no plan. The history repeats, Shibusawa slams Akutagawa to the ground, defeats Kyouka's ability, and tries to attack her. And again, Atsushi shows up and saves Kyouka from getting slammed into the stone by using his body as a shield. Atsushi then becomes the motivation for Kyouka to actively use her ability that she hates again and he defeats Shibusawa.

After the defeat of Shibusawa, the first thing Atsushi does is look at Kyoka and smile. She then blushed and smiled at him too. When the two met Dazai, Atsushi said he was proud to save the city with them. While saying this, he looked at Kyouka and smiled at her again. It made her blush and smile at him again too. At the credit, when they have to work together, they look at each other and smile while leaving the office.
The Guild Aftermath Arc[]
While eating with Kyouka in their dorm, Atsushi thinks about how both of them have the same problem with controlling their ability even though they both can do it better now thanks to Fukuzawa's ability. First Atsushi is concerned about Kyouka when he remembers her ability kills her parents, and then is scared of her torment knowledge. When he asks if she is okay to start coming to work tomorrow, she tells him the reason she feels fine, which makes him blush and nervous.

The next day, Atsushi tells her work information, which she makes him surprise when she already remembers all the information. They are going to the Uzumaki Coffe to talk more, but annoyed waitress Lucy welcomes them. While Atsushi talks with Lucy and reminds her she saved him before, Kyouka interrupts them with her order, making Lucy upset. She and Kyouka stare into each other eyes few seconds until Lucy turns her head over to do her work, not forgetting to threaten Atsushi. When Atsushi is concerned and looks following Lucy, Kyouka comforts him to not worry. She grabs her knife and tells him if Lucy tries to hurt him Kyouka will cut her down first.
Lucy then hands them a dispatch specifically for Kyouka to deliver a briefcase to a client and calls Kyouka a shrimp. As they head to a quay, they split up and search for the boat containing the briefcase. Later, Kyouka spots naked Atsushi on the water after he is kicked out of Lucy's. Later, when Lucy points out the right boat, Kyouka says she doesn't trust her and asks her whose truth Lucy wants, which makes Lucy upset again.
After obtaining the reports on the death of Kyouka's parents, they realize that Demon Snow – which Kyōka long thought killed her parents is a sign of her parents' love for her. Kyouka starts confiding her past and the reason she keeps her phone with Atsushi then starts crying. Atsushi then asks if there is anything he can do for her but Lucy pulls him out of the coffee shop.
Another day, Kyouka and Atsushi try out Lucy's coffee, and unlike Atsushi who compliments it, she says she finds it average, and if such coffee costs the same as the manager's, their customers will not go along.
Cannibalism Arc[]
When Kyouka fights with Akutagawa, at first, he claims that Kyouka is not suited for life in the Agency at all, making her retort that she is not the person he knew. They keep fighting, and Akutagawa says Kyouka's eyes are different from when he first saw her, recounting a similar experience with a person he knew. Akutagwa tells Kyouka her eyes changed . It no longer belongs to a person who doesn't valid their own life anymore. Her eyes belong to a person who doesn't hope for death because she met a certain person and joined a certain organization. He then remembers Atsushi's speech about Kyouka, and Askutagawa tells Kyouka he is happy for her.

Hunting Dogs Arc[]
Kyouka is the only one who wants to save Atsushi and she doesn't care If she dies.
After the Detective Agency is framed as criminals known as Decay of Angels, while they are making a plan, Kyouka tells Kunikida that she wants to go back because she feels that Atsushi might be in trouble and wants to help him. Kunikida is very surprised and tells her that this is insane and they just need to run away. He adds that there will be no place to hide or run and she may die. However, Kyouka with a serious face states that she doesn't care and is ready to go so far for Atsushi. Kunikida gets that she won't change her mind and hands her some of his notebook pages in case of emergency.
She arrives just in time to rescue Atsushi from a barrage of shots from the military police at the basement of the hostage situation site and knocks them out unconscious. Kyouka then informs Atsushi that the Agency is wanted as a criminal organization, with "escape" virtually impossible for them. She grabs his hand and they run. They head back to the crime scene and hide on the ceiling using some of Kunikida's pages.
After two days, they come out of hiding, with Atsushi who becomes very sad about the heard news of other members. It makes Kyouka sad too, but then she reminds him that their priority is survival amidst his disbelief in recent happenings. As they go along the streets filled with news about the Agency's terrorist acts, Kyouka notices that Atsushi is watching the news and she advises him to face forward and keep going. Then she gives him a hat to hide his face and tells him that they need to procure money to flee with and later take a train somewhere far to escape together.
Atsushi agrees but worrying about the future, he asks her what will be after this and Kyouka replies that she doesn't know. Atsushi realizes that Kyouka is right and the plan of Decey of Angels is well thought out and both of them cannot fight them. However, as Atsushi ponders what Dazai-san would do in this situation, he comes up with an idea. Atsushi plans to collaborate with Fitzgerald using his Eyes of God to locate Mushitaro, who warned The Agency about their plan and knows the Decay of Angels. Kyouka is dubious of seeking help from their previous enemy because he may sell them to the military police, but Atsushi thinks that it might be their only choice.
As soon as they enter Fitzgerald's office, they see Louisa who was attacked by Hawthorne. Louisa asks them to help her boss. Atsushi tells Kyouka to take care of Ms. Alcott and runs to help. After Hawthorne leaves, Fitzgerald notices that before Hawthorne left he used his ability to the pen. Francis was about to die and Atsushi would lost their chance to save the Agency If Kyouka hadn't seen the message from the screens that was sent by Dazai who got arrested.
Kyouka remembers Atsushi's kindness and says that he doesn't need to change.
When they are about to leave, Alcott advises Fitzgerald to bring Atsushi and Kyouka to Margaret, whose comatose condition has worsened. Seeing her status, Atsushi agrees to help, but Kyouka still doubts it and asks Atsushi if he is sure about that. Atsushi says that he knows about Kunikida-san's reaction who would get angry about wasting his strength helping every poor soul he runs into but Atsushi states that he cannot ignore someone suffering because in the past he was in a similar situation. Kyouka looks at Atsushi and remembers how he saved her from her dark past and remarks that he doesn't need to change.

Chapter 3: The White Reaper[]
After Atsushi defeats the group of assassins, Kyouka appears behind the remaining assassin holding her dagger against his neck, and asks Atsushi if she can kill him. Even though Atsushi says there's no need, Kyouka still wants to kill the assassin because this man was trying to kill Atsushi. She only stops when Atsushi says the assassin won’t be able to hold a gun ever again and she knows that man doesn’t pose a threat to Atsushi.
The assassin recognizes Kyouka, a killer of 35 people. Confused about how she is still with the mafia after the rumors of her betrayal, Atsushi replies that Kyouka did indeed betray the mafia but came back. Kyouka adds that she does all of it for Atsushi.
As Atsushi and Kyouka walk through the streets, Atsushi suddenly kneels, wincing in pain with blood dripping down his neck. Very worried, Kyouka asks him if he is okay, and tries to take the horned collar around his neck off, but Atsushi refuses. He reveals the collar neutralizes his ability, explaining that he may hurt Kyouka if he takes it off. As the Black Lizard comes across them, Atsushi explains how he and Kyouka knew about the bombs she take care of them. The two then left.
Chapter 10: Scheme[]
Kyouka appears, preventing Akutagawa from further entering the Port Mafia base. Akutagawa orders her to step out of his way, otherwise he will also kill her. Kyouka responds that it is all right, but if he continues, he will fight that person. When they are fighting, she tells him Atsushi is much more powerful than him.
In the middle of their battle, Akutagawa was knocked over by Atsushi's attack “Stop. I won’t let you hurt her. Are you all right, Kyouka-chan? I’ve come to help you.”
While grabbing Atsushi’s hand, Kyouka reveals " I had the feeling. That if I didn't defeat this man, you would go up against him. And then, one of you would lose your life... I'm sorry."
Atsushi grabs her hand back "It's alright. I won't die. I'll be by your side. I will never let you sink alone into the darkness ever again."
Kyouka squeezes his hand "I am not afraid of the darkness when you are with me."
Hearing this, Akutagawa says that there might be kind-hearted murderers in the organization. However, he tells them that he did his research. Akutagawa tells them that no matter how much they grasp each other with their bloodied hands, they will never feel warmth.
Chapter 11: Time[]
Akutagawa begins to attack Atsushi and Kyouka. Atsushi tells Akutagawa he can't win since he's alone while he has Kyouka. Kyouka orders Demon Snow to defeat her enemy and protect her and Atsushi. However, Demon Snow doesn't move. Tanizaki, the one who holds Kyouka's phone reveals himself and escapes with Akutagawa. They hide in a room and take the unconscious Kyouka with them.
Atsushi finds them using the tiger's ability and he is shocked to see Akutagawa giving the orders to Demon Snow to kill Kyouka one hour from that time. Akutagawa threatens and orders Atsushi to take him to the top floor.
After screaming, growling, swearing, and a failed attack on Akutagawa, Atsushi tells the guards to drop their guns but still doesn't accept Akutagawa's order yet. When Akutagwa asks him if he wants to leave Kyouka to die or accept the order, he has a panic attack. Atsushi then agrees to take Akutagawa to the top floor, therefore, Akutagawa can’t hurt Kyouka and must let her go safely. He then threatens the guards to drop their guns or he will kill anyone who refuses.
Chapter 21: Future[]
While explaining his plan, Dazai fires Atsushi. Dazai wants him to live on the outside and arranges for someone to take care of him, and make his way to the world of light. The one Dazai chooses is Kyouka. So he fires both of them

Atsushi and the orphanage's children play football with someone who looks like Kyouka.
Let's Go Flower Gazing![]

In episode 2 (Chapter 7), Kunikida approaches Atsushi and tells him to prepare a spot for the Armed Detective Agency since the spots get really crowded. Early in the morning, Atsushi heads to the park and notices that it's crowded, he then notices Kyouka sitting and asks her why she is there, Kyouka reveals the she overheard the conversation about saving a spot. Atsushi asks her how long has she been waiting at the park. Kyouka tells him that she had been waiting since evening and has prepared lunch as well. Crushed by the thought of him getting a praise and starts feeling himself guilty. He notices a tall tower of boxes which turns out that Kyouka prepared a plenty of lunch boxes. Kyouka gives him one and Atsushi opens it. He is surprised how perfect it made is. Later, Kyouka tells him that she was looking forward to looking at the cherry blossoms. Atsushi smiles at her and thanks her for everything.
Finders Kyouka's[]

In episode 3 (Chapter 17), walking in an alleyway, Kyouka finds a lost kitten and takes it with her to the Agency. The cat instantly takes a liking at Atsushi, which Dazai thinks may be because it sees him as a fellow cat, though Atsushi retorts that he is a tiger. Kunikida lectures Kyouka on the responsibility of taking care of an animal. He proceeds to feed it with milk, though Kunikida informs them that they cannot keep it.
In the meantime, the Agency members look after the cat and enjoy spending time with it. Kyouka later decides to put it up for lost and found, eventually making its way back to its grateful owners. As Miiko the cat is returned to its home, Dazai cheers Kyouka that they still have a cat with them, much to Atsushi's chagrin.
Bungo Stray Dogs Preschool![]
In episode 7 (Chapter 15), Atsushi asks Kyouka what the thing she's holding is, and she tells him it's a pair of scissors, used for cutting paper. She proceeds by saying he mustn't use them to stab people. Kyouka then cuts out colored papers and Atsushi guesses them to which all of them nothing look like what she intended. Kyouka becomes embarrassed and summons Demon Snow to rip all the cut-outs. In manga, the two start making paper animals. Kyouka makes a rabbit, while Atsushi makes a tiger. Seeing Atsushi's tiger, Kyouka gets scared and summons her ability "Demon Snow".
The Armed Detective Agency Beats the Heat[]

In episode 10 (Chapter 57), Armed Detective Agency go to watch fireworks. Atsushi and Kyouka admire the pretty sparklers, and Atsushi even draws a tiger in the air using the sparks. He continues to draw animals while Kyouka guesses what the shapes are. Then, the agency members watch the rocket fireworks. Just as they are watching it, Dazai softly speaks that if he has to go, he'd like to go out as beautifully. Hearing this, Atsushi responds that he prefers him not to go and glances at Dazai.
In the mid-credits scene, Atsushi tells Dazai to not say what he said, not even as a joke. Meanwhile, Kyouka glances at Atsushi then the fireworks and tells that they are beautiful.
"Snow White" Fairytale[]

In chapter 66, BSD characters are in Snow White fairytale. Kyouka (Snow White) is kicked out from her home because of Lucy (Queen of certain country) who become very angry and jealous when the magical mirror (Poe) told her that Kyouka is the most beautiful person in the world, not her. Lucy even breaks the mirror because of her anger, but later restor it. Despite of this, Kyouka is a strong person. Later on, she meets Dwarfs and becomes friends with them. Then, she started living together with them. Then Lucy sees by the mirror that Kyouka is having a good time which become a new reason of her anger and she decides to kill Kyouka with cursed apple.
Afterwards, Dwarfs become very sad that Kyouka fall into Queen's trick. Dazai says that they need a prince's kiss to lift curse. At that moment, Atsushi comes and asks where Snow White is. Dazai tells Atsushi to kiss Kyouka. Atsushi comes closer to her face and almost kiss her, but Lucy comes running and starts yelling at Atsushi. As a result of the loud noise she made, Kyouka wakes up.
In Chapter "A Sweet Day Out", Chuuya meets Atsushi and Kyouka, who are walking together. Kyouka takes out her weapon and jumps in front of Atsushi in order to protect him from Chuuya because she doesn't trust him. Chuuya explains he's at the shop for private matters, so Atsushi grabs Kyouka's shoulder gently and explains counseling that they should respect and trust "Dazai's friend". Chuuya gets angry at the assertion, telling them that he and Dazai aren't friends, and then calms down before he asks Atsushi and Kyouka if they are on a date. Kyouka doesn’t react at all to this question, but Atsushi does. His face turns red, and he denies that they are dating, further explaining that they are actually here to buy snacks for everyone at the Agency. Hearing this, Chuuya gives advice as to what to buy for Dazai. Atsushi and Kyouka both thank him and go back to the Agency afterwards.
Kyouka tells Ranpo that she wants to find the four leaf clover to make Atsushi happy.
In Anthology 3 Chapter 5, Ranpo sees that Kyouka spends all her free time after the mission to find the four leaf clover. He tells her to go back to The Agency saying that If he do it, he get a reward (food). Kyouka replies that she can't go untill she finds the four leaf clover. Explaining that it brings a happiness and good luck to the person who have it, so she must to find it for Atsushi. Ranpo is speechless for few seconds and then decides to help her. After they go to The Agency, it's revealed that Kyouka have been doing this for a hour. It shows how important is Atsushi's happiness for her.
In Chapter "Breakfast Harmony", Atsushi notices that Kyouka is making a breakfast and asks is there anything he can help her. Kyouka replies that she's already done. Kyouka gives him food and Atsushi thanks her. She says that cooking for two is like cooking for one. Atsushi asks her did she always eat alone before and she answers "yes". Silent for a while, he asks what she has cooked. Kyouka says what it is tofu chazuke and adds that she made it because she heard that he likes chazuke. Smiling, Atsushi says that it's great and he's glad that they can eat their favourite things together. Kyouka replies him a smile.
In BSD Anthology 4 Chapter 2, feeling shy and blushing, Kyouka asks Naomi for advice about Atsushi, as she wants to surprise him with a thank-you gift. For Atsushi, Naomi suggests that her and Kyouka make a home-cooked meal together. They start by deciding on what to cook, and Naomi asks Kyouka for what she wants to make. Kyouka suggests different kinds of Tofu, which causes Naomi to worry that they might have to give up without even trying. Naomi thus advises Kyouka that the kind of meal they plan to cook needs to to be both stylish and feminine in order to impress Atsushi. It’s at this moment where Kunikida and Dazai come into the room. Kunikida is angry with Dazai, telling him that they need to move on to their job in Aomori, but Dazai informs Kunikida that he plans to first go receive his market exchange reward. Dazai opens his market exchange reward and everyone sees that it is for apples. Dazai shows these apples to Kyouka and Naomi notes that the fruits would definitely make a girly-chic meal.
Later on, Kyouka (whilst blushing) confesses to Atsushi about her plan to make a dinner feast for him that day. Atsushi is very shocked to hear this, and doesn't know what to say (he too starts blushing). Naomi reminds her that they need to go now to begin cooking. After this, Atsushi goes on to tell the other agents how happy he is that Kyouka is going to cook a meal for him. Dazai responds that he's glad for Atsushi and gives him a single present.
On his way home, Atsushi wonders about Kyouka’s meal plans, figuring that it will just be some kind of Tofu dish. However, he reassures himself that whatever Kyouka makes him, it will be delicious. Upon arriving home at their apartment, Kyouka greets Atsushi, and presents him with his dinner. Atsushi is very pleased, but since Kyouka has prepared so many dishes containing apples, it becomes immediately apparent that he’ll quickly reach the limits of his appetite for them. This prompts Atsushi to consider the flavoring that Dazai gave him as a gift, and he thinks to himself that he can still hear Dazai’s voice and wonders if it means he’s going crazy. These thoughts are interrupted by Kyouka, who thanks him with a smile, remarking that "Seeing someone's excitement can make me happy... I never knew." AtsuKyou is the most popular hetero ship in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. It is considered one of the few ships that can become canon, due to the abundance of romantic undertones following the relationship, mainly pertaining from Kyouka's side. Fans of the ship point to the two's close professional and personal relationship as proof of a budding romance, along with some fans of the ship theorizing that Kyouka has a possible one-sided crush on Atsushi due to many hints throughout the series pointing to this direction. Though the pair do indeed share a tight bond over their traumatic pasts (pasts which they've helped each other work through), cemented by their many struggles shared together as members of the Agency, currently their relationship is best described as a "close friendship" (For his part, Atsushi admits to seeing her as something of a little sister in the official Bungou Stray Dogs anthology).
Early on, Atsushi frequently blushing and getting flustered by Kyouka led a lot of fans to see the feelings as mutual, so the ship was extremely popular for their sweet moments and the strong importance the relationship gives to the characters. The various ship tease - such as Atsushi getting called Kyouka's boyfriend and the two going on a "date" - was another reason for fans to ship them. It was mainly the scene of Atsushi saving Kyouka's life, wrapping her into his arms, from since then giving her hope to live that made people ship them together.
Although the ship is very popular among the Eastern fandom, the ship is the most controversial among the Western fandom due to the age gap between Atsushi and Kyouka, with Kyouka being in her teens at 14 years (DoB Nov 4) and Atsushi being a young adult in his late teens at 18 (DoB May 5). This a difference of about 4 - 1/2 years, which isn't an uncommon age gap for adult couples, but can be seen as relatively large one between two teenagers of the likes of Atsushi and Kyouka, although a lot of people do not mind the age difference. A majority of the fan base dropped AtsuKyou upon learning about the age difference, and typically the Western fandom sees Atsushi as purely an older brother figure for Kyouka. Most of the ship's fans simply ship it as a one-sided puppy crush from Kyouka's side, or typically prefer to see AtsuKyou only fully actualizing once the two have both come of age in the future. AtsuKyou is heavily rivaled by Shin Soukoku and AtsuLucy.
