KenHina is the slash ship between Kenma Kozume and Shōyō Hinata from the Haikyu!! fandom.

Canon[]

Hinata and Kenma are both volleyball players at different high schools, while Kenma is a second year setter at Nekoma, Hinata is a first year middle blocker at Karasuno. They first meet when Hinata accidentally runs off track during practice with his team. Though uncomfortable at first, Kenma reveals that he had gotten lost. The two eventually hit it off when Hinata notices Kenma’s volleyball shoes and sparks a conversation about the game. Despite Kenma's shy nature, Hinata is able to converse with him easily due to his energetic and amiable personality. When Kenma gets picked up by Kuroo, he states that they'll see each other again soon. Hinata's confused at first, but understands when he is shocked to see Kenma again at the practice match between Nekoma and Karasuno.

During the Tokyo training arc, Kenma wonders where Hinata, who had stayed behind to take remedial classes, is. Once Hinata arrives, the two quickly gravitate towards each other, with Hinata asking Kenma if a transmission tower is the Tokyo Tower and Kenma introducing Hinata to Lev. Hinata later impresses Kuroo by managing to get Kenma to participate in personal training, even though it was for 5 tosses. He also states that Kenma always looks excited when he watches Hinata play. However, Kenma says that he wouldn't want to be on the same team as Hinata, as his dedication and passion is too much for his rather relaxed and calm personality during gameplay. Kenma’s teammates, when they see him talking with Hinata, remark that it is possibly the most they’ve seen Kenma socialize.

The two continue to text each other, mostly about volleyball and their tournament advances. During the nationals arc, Kenma often watches Hinata’s games, both as support and to analyze his growth in order to form a strategy to defeat him in a game. When Hinata falls ill and is unable to play in his team’s match against Kamomedai, Kenma arrives “to cheer up a friend”. He brings Hinata a tablet so that he can watch the game. Kuroo later says to Kenma (who doubts his actions mattered much when anyone else could have done the same) in an after-chapter special that “When you’re having a rough time, just seeing a friend for a minute can go a loooong way.”

After their first practice match, Hinata promises to make Kenma say that volleyball's fun and also to beat him one day. This is later fulfilled in Chapter 322. When Kenma falls to the ground from exhaustion after a long rally, he says "that was fun" making Hinata rejoice after hearing that. In addition to that promise, during the Tokyo training arc, Kenma tells Hinata that he wants to play a game against Karasuno other than a practice match, "you know, one that means it's instantly game over!" With that, Hinata is determined to beat Kenma.

After the timeskip, the two are shown meeting again at Kenma’s house, which Hinata is impressed by, though Kenma disagrees, to discuss Kenma sponsoring Hinata’s living in Brazil. Kenma says that he’ll continue to sponsor Hinata as long as he doesn’t get boring, parodying his earlier statement telling Hinata to “Stay interesting.”

While in Brazil, Hinata compares his roommate Pedro to Kenma. Later, a friend asks about the Bouncing Ball company logo on Hinata’s shorts, to which Hinata excitedly replies that it was his friend’s company. Another friend asks Hinata for Kenma’s autograph. At some point, Kenma visits Hinata in Brazil and the two play beach volleyball and make a video together.

Throughout the course of the manga and anime, the two are very close friends, both calling each other by their first names, as well as texting each other regularly about matches and other things. In the timeskip, Kenma also becomes Hinata’s sponsor, showing they still have a strong friendship after school.

Quotes[]

Kuroo“Uh... Everything's going almost scarily according to plan. What's with that look?”
Kenma“It's sad watching the end of interesting Shoyo.”
— Chapter 311

Fanon[]

Though KenHina is the second most popular ship for both characters, they still have a lot of fans. Fan work, is often canon compliant, showing them as very close friends and also presenting their ship as "fluffy". As such, many fanfictions or other fan works rely on the friends-to-lovers trope. Due to Hinata’s sunny disposition, and his canonical comparison to the sun, both the sun and sunflowers are a common theme in many fan works. Other fanworks show the two in a more platonic sense, having them already be in relationships such as KageHina and KuroKen, and sometimes, the two characters try and hang out without their boyfriends being jealous or seeing them.

On AO3, KenHina is the second most written ship for both Hinata and Kenma.
