Hananene is the het ship between Hanako and Yashiro Nene from the Toilet-bound Hanako-kun fandom.

Canon[]

Hananene-0

Nene to Hanako on the rooftop

Hanako meets Nene when she summons him for a wish after hearing the rumors of the 7th school mystery. She is initially shocked when she sees that Hanako is actually male. Their fates became bound together when Hanako ingests the other mermaid scale in order to weaken the curse turning Nene into a fish after she wishes to be human again. Hanako then made Nene into his assistant since he granted her wish and made her clean the toilets after school. Nene complains about doing it but tolerates it as she is grateful for the times Hanako saved her from danger. Hanako reveals that he looks forward to it every day as it made him feel nostalgic and like he had a friend. Nene then calls him Hanako-kun instead of Hanako-san for the first time, signaling their friendship.

Hanako is occasionally flirtatious and teases her often. After kissing her on the cheek to cast a spell that temporarily wards supernaturals away and asking her to go out with him in order to lure out the confession tree, Nene becomes upset as she thought he actually liked her, so she felt like her feelings were being played around with. Hanako then apologizes to her while taking his hat off and she thought that he looked like any other normal boy. Realizing how little she knew about him, she begins to seek to know more.

From then on, Hanako and Nene spend much of their time at school together solving problems caused by supernaturals. Nene tries to find out more about him while Hanako does his best to protect her. Despite not being human anymore, Nene has called Hanako her friend many times, which surprised others who are not fond of supernaturals.

After she learns about Amane from the memories recalled after destroying Tsuchigomori's Yorishiro, Nene realizes for the first time that he really is dead which caused her to be awkward around him for some time. After giving him donuts, Nene decides to tell Hanako that he was "more trouble than it's worth" but that she will stick around him anyway because she liked Hanako as a friend. In the next chapter, Hanako thanked Nene, telling her that it was the first time a girl told him that she liked him, and opening up to her a bit more about his past, ending any awkwardness between them. Maybe due to fear of her finding out more or not being ready to tell her, he says that he will tell her more in the future and they made a pinky promise for her to stay as his assistant until that time comes.

In chapter 23, Hanako possesses Nene in suspicion that her best friend Akane Aoi is School Mystery Number One. Hanako, possessing Nene, then angered Aoi Akane because of holding Akane Aoi's hand forcefully and overall touching her in general. Aoi Akane then somewhat pushed Hanako out of Nene's body, making Hanako surprised. He later on found out that Akane Aoi was not School Mystery Number One.

Nene attempts to cheer up Hanako by kissing him on the cheek.

Nene deeply trusts Hanako as she believes that he will help her and immediately calls his name during dangerous situations for help. Hanako, on the other hand, tries his best to let her live a happily life knowing that her lifespan is very short. It is implied that they are having romantic feelings. Nene has blushed several times such as when they held hands and she kissed him on the cheek after seeing that Hanako felt down. In chapter 29, Nene noticed that Hanako was feeling quite down, not knowing about her short lifespan. As she noticed this, Nene kissed Hanako on his cheek and said "It's just a charm to make you feel better, or something.." implied to what Hanako said after he kissed Nene on the cheek before. Hanako blushed and got flustered, implying some sort of romantic feeling.

Yeah-heart

Nene attempts to convince Hanako to leave the fake world.

In chapter 58, Hanako tells Nene that he never cared who lived or died until he met Nene. He then accepts her wish to live a long life, and decides to let her leave the fake world. Then, he tells her to close her eyes, which Nene takes as him trying to kiss her, and leans in. However, he then pushes her off of the cloud they are on so she can escape.

Hanako is upset when Nene and Kou are going to a festival outside of school since he couldn't leave school grounds. He instead recommends that the two of them meet him at the Misaki Stairs and the three go to the Tanabata Star Festival. Near the end of the festival, Nene is knocked down by a cow. She is transported to the 1964 Star Fesrival where she meets a young Yugi Amane, Hanako's human counterpart.

Young Amane helps Nene up and tells her that he was just about to write his wish on his red wishing slip. Earlier, Hanako had explained to Nene that if you wrote your wish on wishing slips of every color, then your wish would come true. Nene has every color wishing slip except for red, and she sees the wishing slips as her only way of getting back to the present, so she tries to take Amane's wishing slip. Nene makes up a lie that she needs to wishing slip to get a boyfriend since she confessed her love a hundred times and got rejected before getting tricked and getting her money stolen. Amane takes pity on Nene.

Amane eats food with Nene and Nene finds out that Amane was actually a young, alive Hanako. After eating, Amane admits that he is glad Nene is there so that he didn't have to eat dinner alone. Nene notices some rice on Amane's cheek and wipes it off for him, making him flustered since he wasn't a kid. Amane blushes at Nene and thanks her anyway before giving his red wishing slip to Nene. Amane tells Nene what he was going to write on his wishing slip, but whispers in Nene’s ear saying she could have it since she's kind of his type. It’s unknown what Nene thought after that. The two see the fireworks and Nene wonders if everything had been a dream after she got hit by the cow.

Nene thinks about how Amane was going to kill his own brother when he grew up, so she gives Amane all of her wishing slips and explains how his wish would come true if he wrote it on every wishing slip. Nene kisses Amane on the forehead before getting hit by a cow again to return to the present. Nene wakes up to find Hanako and Kou standing over her and Hanako explains to Nene what happened. It's revealed that Amane wrote on his wishing slips that he wishes to see Nene again.

Hananene chapter41

Nene saying yes to liking Hanako.

In Shijima Mei's fake world, Hanako becomes Nene's classmate as his human counterpart, Yugi Amane. Nene, shocked about Amane being her classmate, doesn't believe it at first and did things like call Amane an evil spirit and pouring salt on him. Nene later realizes that she had just been bullying Amane after Amane asks her if she hates him. Nene assures Amane that she doesn't hate him, prompting Amane to ask if Nene liked him. Nene says yes and Amane shyly asks her to go watch a movie with him. Amane even admits that he is asking Nene out on a date.

The next time Hanako and Nene are seen together, they're cleaning the pool together with the other students. They seem to be having a genuinely good time, such as racing each other and falling in the pool together. Earlier, when Kou and Nene had spotted each other, they ran excitedly towards each other as Amane and Mitsuba looked at them, possibly in jealousy.

Nene and Kou learn that they were in a fake world and they had to kill Amane and Mitsuba to escape to the real world. Nene is sad about learning she has to kill Amane, but Kou cheers her up. Amane interrupts and asks what they are talking about. Nene thinks about how she can't kill Amane and that there must be another way. Amane and Nene meet up with Tsukasa before going to the rooftop to stargaze with everyone. Amane is embarrassed when Nene sees him hugging Tsukasa. Tsukasa walks past Nene and says he hopes she manages to kill Amane.

In Number 6's boundary, Aoi describes Hanako as Nene's crush. Later, Sumire asked Nene whether or not she and Hanako were a couple, which Nene denies. However, when she describes Nene as being 'just like her' for being in love with an apparition, she does not deny it.

In chapter 56, Nene tells Kou "I love Hanako-kun and this world". A few pages later, Kou tells Nene that "The one person [Hanako] always ends up forgiving is only ever you, Senpai!", implying that Nene is the person that Hanako cares about the most.

In chapter 62, Hanako also teleports to where Akane was trying to kiss Nene to stop him, appearing upset.

When Hanako saves Nene at the end of chapter 67, saying that he 'can't just let some nobody out there take [his] assistant as a bride.'

In chapter 74, Kou asks Nene if she likes Hanako. Nene gets flustered, saying that her feelings towards Hanako weren't important in that situation.

While on a train to the far shore, Hanako and Aoi talk about their love lives. Aoi asks Hanako what he liked about Nene. He admits that he liked everything about her. Aoi finds similarities between her and Hanako due to how they both can't say that they like those they love and how they can't go back even if they wanted to. The train comes to an abrupt stop because of Nene and Kou. After Hanako fights with Teru, Nene and Hanako run away together.

Nene confesses her feelings and confronts Hanako about everything that has been going on while they were separated, including the red house. While resting for a bit, Hanako apologizes and expresses his true feelings. Nene catches on and tries to make him admit that he likes her. Soon after, Hanako says that he missed her and the two kiss. Nene and Hanako share a hug as she cries and tells him how glad she is that they met again.

In Chapter 101, Nene and Hanako discuss the upcoming school festival. Hanako sulks that he can never have much fun at the festivals because no one can see him and then asks Nene if she had fun watching the fireworks at Kou's house still in a sulking manner. Nene apologies and invites him to have fun with her and Kou at the festival together. Hanako asks her if they can "get served by people in silly costumes," "make fun of the shameless couples that sneak off to make out with each other," and eat rainbow-colored cotton candy together. Nene agrees which makes Hanako happy.

Nene asks Hanako to help her with something and brings him to the school's auditorium. She asks him to help her carry back the costumes require for the school festival's play that she is apart of. Hanako takes a guess and asks her if the play is Alice in Wonderland, which he assumed based on the color of the dress she was holding. Nene tries to make him guess based on the lines from the play she recites; "this world is so gray... so dull. Nothing matters. Nothing ever goes right.

Hananene 101 2

"Shall I take you there?"

I wish... I could go far away, over the rainbow. Where all your troubles melt away... and every dream comes true. I wish I could go to a wonderful place like that." afterwards Hanako takes her hand and says "shall I take you there?", before making his correct guess of The Wizard of Oz. Nene blushes and says that she doesn't think that what he said is actually a line in the play.

Hanako asks her if she got the lead role and Nene confesses that she was cast as 'twist no. 4', one of the tornados that blows Dorothy and her house away. Hanako asks her how someone would even act that out. Nene takes his hands and spins around with him and Hanako cooperates and spins with her. The two land on the floor after getting too dizzy and are still handing hands. Nene starts giggling and tells Hanako to promise her that he'll come and see her perform in the play. Hanako blushes, fidgets with her hand and promises that he will.

In Chapter 102, Mitsuba asks Nene whether or not she is dating Hanako, and if so how far they've gone (holding hands, etc). When asked if they've kissed, she flusters in embarrassment. Later, she tells Mitsuba that she wonders how Hanako really feels about her since he never tells her anything, even though he promised that he would one day. When asked "why [she] can't just ask him," she says that it would be too nosy to do so as they aren't officially boyfriend and girlfriend. She laments that they've kissed, but aren't officially dating, and comes to the conclusion that she'll confess to him at the school festival.

In Chapter 103, Hanako appears jealous when Mitsuba jokes that he and Nene were on a date.

In Chapter 104, Hanako and Nene are touring the festival together alongside Mitsuba and Kou.

In Chapter 105, when time froze for some reason, Tsukasa taunted Hanako about the clock and their plan of tinking it for time, Tsukasa then used Nene as his assistant, kissing her on the lips and left Hanako frozen, drowning in tears. It is implied that he either lost her assistant and also Tsukasa, trying to steal Yashiro from him, in general.

Fanon[]

Hananene is the most popular ship among the Toilet-bound Hanako-kun fandom. It has plenty of fan art, and it's the most written ship on AO3 for both characters and the fandom. This makes Mitsukou, a ship that parallels Hananene, the second most popular ship. While Hananene is the most popular ship, it does have its rivals, mainly Aoinene. Hananene is also rivaled by Hanako and Nene's ships with Kou, Hanakou and Kounene. However, some fans like to just ship all three of them in a polyamorous relationship or pair off the four by shipping Kou with Mitsuba.

Despite Hananene's popularity, there is still a lot of controversy regarding whether people should ship it. Some say that Hanako is too old for Nene since he was born in 1955, though it's argued that ghosts don't age and Hanako is still mentally 13. Others say that Yashiro is too old for Hanako since she is 16 while Hanako is mentally 13. Both of these arguments are often countered by the fact that Hananene is canon. Though, there are some people that argue that Hanako is toxic since he made a lot of sacrifices for Nene that she didn't want. Others also say that Hanako acts inappropriately or perverted with Nene. Fans counter those arguments with the fact that Hanako is mentally young, only 13 years old.
