KaeLisa is the het ship between Kaeya Alberich and Lisa Minci from the Genshin Impact fandom.

Canon[]

Prologue: Act I[]

After fending off Stormterror (Dvalin) with the help of a mysterious voice, Traveler lands their glider, and is approached by Cavalry Captain Kaeya. He immediately takes Traveler to meet with the Acting Grand Master, Jean. Lisa is also present in the Grand Master's office, and it is discovered that they are all a part of the same order, known as the Knights of Favonius.

Kaeya and Lisa discuss the Stormterror crisis. Jean mentions that Lisa, after using her detection magic, has discovered that a leyline disorder is increasing Stormterror's powers. Kaeya, intrigued, asks, "Is that so?" Lisa then turns to him and provides more information. She explains that the leylines are located in the Four Winds Temples, and confirms that Stormterror is drawing power from those temples.

After this interaction, Kaeya, Lisa, and Amber work together to cut off the source of power, by tackling a temple each. Traveler meets up with each of them, and both Kaeya and Lisa officially join the party.

Midsummer Island Adventure: Part III - Dodo King of the Sea[]

Prior to this part of the event, Jean had given the role of Acting Grand Master to Kaeya while she was in the Archipelago. In this part, however, it was discovered that he was also in the archipelago.

When asked who was overseeing the Knights of Favonius in his stead, Kaeya replied that he had given the role to "the mighty librarian, Lisa, of course."[1] He then went on to praise her strictness in keeping things in order. Of all the knights, he chose Lisa for the role.

If players visited the Grand Master's office after the quest, they could interact with Lisa, who would say, "Hmmm. Both Jean and Kaeya are absent... How peculiar."

Of Drink A-Dreaming: Dandelion, Rose, and Windwheel Aster[]

After realizing that the tavern is a pleasant atmosphere that can help you relax and unwind, Jean asks Lisa, "Is that why you and Kaeya like the tavern so much?" Lisa then replies, "Yes, and no. It really depends on who's making the drinks." Aside from confirming a shared hobby between the two, this is the first spoken dialogue suggesting that Kaeya and Lisa interact outside of work.

Of Ballads and Brews: Sounds From Afar[]

When the knights gathered at the Favonius headquarters to hear a letter from Grand Master Varka, Kaeya and Lisa found themselves at the back of the crowd, next to the Traveler and Paimon. Kaeya comments that, if the Grand Master "has the time to be writing letters," it means that the contents of this letter are probably nothing to be nervous about. Lisa adds on by saying, "Kaeya's exaggerating a little, but otherwise I agree."[2]

Of Ballads and Brews: Bonds of Melody[]

Lisa contacts Kaeya about Razor's quest to make Thousand-Wind Wine. She tells Kaeya that he is the best person for the task of bringing back a barrel of wine from the Dawn Winery. Lisa explains to the Traveler, who approaches in the middle of the conversation, that she realized the job was meant for "most sociable and savviest member in [the Knights'] ranks, the Cavalry Captain." In response, Kaeya sighs endearingly and asks Lisa to spare him the flattery, implying that there's no need to throw compliments his way since they're friends and he already knows she wants to help Razor. After a pause, he reveals his uncertainty, saying that it might be difficult to fulfill Lisa's request since he hasn't been to the Dawn Winery "in a long time."

Lisa immediately jokes, "Difficult? For you? Don't be silly, negotiating is your biggest strength."

Understanding Kaeya's underlying doubts about returning home and facing his family, Lisa then reassures him, first by pointing out that "Weinlesefest is one of the most important festivals in Mondstadt," and that he knows "how Diluc thinks better than anyone." She goes on to give him examples of what he could say to ask Diluc for help. Lisa guarantees that if Kaeya says these things, Diluc will not only provide the barrel, but also funding. Whispering to the Traveler, Paimon comments, "Lisa's literally trying to extort Master Diluc!"

Kaeya, thinking about what Lisa said, replies, "Hmm... I suppose. Alright, I'll head out right away." Paimon notes how "he didn't take much persuading!"

Razor, who has been in deep thought throughout the entire conversation, expresses his frustration with answering questions. Lisa turns her attention to her student. After some discussion, she asks the Traveler to keep Kaeya company while she helps Razor process his emotions. Kaeya chimes in, "Splendid. I was just thinking about how nice it would be to have some company on my trip." Before the Traveler and Kaeya leave, Lisa also urges them in a lighthearted tone that they "don't forget to tell Diluc the Knights of Favonius send our regards."[3]

It should be noted that Weinlesefest is a festival where people "return to their hometown"[2] and spend time with family. By giving Kaeya the mission to retrieve a barrel from the Dawn Winery, Lisa gave him a reason to go home when he might not otherwise have felt comfortable trying (due to tensions from the past). In addition, by asking the Traveler to join him on his journey, she made sure Kaeya wasn't alone with his nerves.

Voice-Over[]

In Kaeya's About Lisa voice-line, he warns the Traveler not to forget to return their books on time, going on to say in a cheeky tone that he "made that mistake once, and boy was she angry." He explains that his arm is still numb from the last time he made the mistake, implying that it was zapped by her Electro abilities.

While Lisa does not have a direct voice-line talking about Kaeya, her About Diluc voice-line includes her sounding amused when she states that she knows someone else the Traveler should talk to instead. This person is (probably) Kaeya, who grew up with Diluc.

In return, Kaeya indirectly refers to Lisa during his voice line for Albedo. He appears jealous that she likes him and finds him attractive.

This is a strong hint that has gone under people’s noses. Maybe because this a voice line about an unrelated character but Kaeya and Lisa made it about themselves.

In addition, Lisa's Interesting Things voice-line has her talking about Calla Lilies, a type of flower that is related to Kaeya because it is his ascension material. She comments that they are "a medicinal flower with antidotal properties. With them in hand, there's no need to worry about the side effects of any potions... Hehe."

Work[]

With Lisa, "though her attitude to life may appear at first to be one of ruthless efficiency, it is in fact better understood as a product of her incorrigibly lazy nature."[4] Kaeya, on the other hand, "is sometimes seen as overly laid-back and even lazy, but he takes his work seriously."[5] To an observer, Kaeya and Lisa offer almost opposite first impressions, and upon closer inspection, have different ways of approaching their work. In the end, however, both are among the most effective members of the Knights of Favonius, as many of their fellow Knights have noted.

However, Kaeya and Lisa seem to have a tendency to pass their work on to other people when they get the chance. Passing their work to each other seems to be an especially common occurrence.

Kaeya, in particular, gets a certain kick out of "convincing others to do his work."[5] And when Lisa first joined the Knights, she was tasked with much more than just the keeping books and records. She was even considered for a captaincy position (which she promptly declined). In Lisa's character story, she negotiated with Kaeya to relieve her of most of her duties.[4] With Lisa taking over Kaeya's Acting Acting Grand Master responsibilities during the Midsummer Adventure, as well as Kaeya being the one to help Lisa get a wine barrel, it is implied that they often have each other's backs when it comes to work.

Eula: Character Story 1[]

As Kaeya and Lisa walk together, some newly recruited guards inform them that Eula has just entered Master Jean's office with a sword. Hearing this, Lisa rushes into the office, worried about missing out on a tea break. Kaeya, on the other hand, stays to take the opportunity to tease the guards. With some elaborate explanations, he manages to convince them that "tea break" was actually code for "sparring".

HoYoverse had released a number of artworks featuring Kaeya and Lisa.

5-Days to Global Release[]

The image shows Kaeya teasing Klee by bouncing Dodoco, Klee's stuffed animal, with his right hand. Klee reaches up and tries to retrieve Dodoco. Amber can be seen in the background, panicking as she tries to calm Klee by offering her own stuffed animal, Baron Bunny. Jean and Lisa are off to the side. As Jean sighs, Lisa holds her own cheek and smiles, indicating that she finds the teasing moment to be absolutely adorable.[6]

Slime Paradise[]

Kaeya and Lisa can be seen standing next to each other, both amused by the fact that the Slime Paradise park was almost shut down on its first day open.[7]

4-Panel Comics[]

The two high-five as they celebrate the Traveler being asked by Jean to become an Honorary Knight. Paimon exclaims, "Oh no! They're going to make you their errand boy!"[8] Due to Kaeya and Lisa's shared habit of playing hot potato with work assignments, their celebration seems to be in line with Paimon's concerns.

Character Tales - "Fleeing Sunlight in the Night"[]

Klee is shown to be telling a "secret" to the Traveler. She explains that, at night, there are trickster monsters that pretend to be the Knights of the Favonius. To defend Mondstadt from such monsters, Klee says that she once blasted the door open. She then mentions having gotten into trouble with Jean because of the action. At that point in the video, Jean is scolding Klee, while a stack of people are seen peeking through the door. Lisa is on top of Kaeya, and Kaeya is on top of Amber. All are shown to be smiling at the scene, implying that they all might have had a hand in - or expected - this outcome. The shot proceeds to zoom in on Kaeya's laughter.

Afterwards, Klee urges the Traveler to not tell anyone, and it is soon revealed that Kaeya was the one who told the "secret" to Klee in the first place. Jean and Lisa, having been in the background, make some comments following that revelation. Jean expresses her realization of and annoyance at Kaeya's part in the incident, while Lisa laughs and states "perhaps we've made the child's studies a little too imaginative lately?"[9] Considering Lisa seemed well-aware of the "secret" due to being in the onlooking stack alongside Kaeya, as well as her un-surprised comment following Klee's admittance, it is possible that Kaeya and Lisa tutor Klee together.

Character Shorts: Jean[]

While Jean is about to be surprised by a birthday feast, four knights are stacked in the background, peeking through the door in order to observe her reaction. This is the second stack that Kaeya and Lisa appear in. Again, Lisa is on top of Kaeya, but this time, Kaeya is on top of Barbara, with Barbara being on top of Klee.[10]

Character Shorts: Klee[]

As the Traveler chases after Klee, who is gleefully running in search of treasure, Paimon says, "Traveler, the place Amber said where they buried the treasure should be right in front. I wonder what kind of gift the other Knights prepared?" This causes the Traveler to remember the knights involved in preparing the gift: Jean, Lisa, Amber, Kaeya, and Albedo. In the image, each of the knights appear to have an expression in regards to said gift. Amber is winking, Albedo is smiling, Jean is sighing, while Kaeya and Lisa are both laughing (and even have the same laughter motion lines).[11] Whatever the gift is, the two have a shared humor regarding it.

Canvas of Starlight Memories[]

During the game's Second Anniversary Web Event, a four-pointed star (often associated with Khaenri'ah, the Travelers, and the 'primordial crystalline gem[s that are] beyond the mundane world' known as Primogems)[12] is symbolically blasted by Kaeya and Lisa as they defeat a Hillichurl.[13]

Fanon[]

For the time being, KaeLisa is a rare pair. Kaeya and Lisa's dynamic is generally envisioned as best friends and co-workers that enjoy kicking back and gossiping together. Both are known to be intellectual, charming, secretive people, with a tendency to tease others. On top of that, they both have a knack for gathering information, albeit using different methods. Overall, they are considered a casual, but engaging, back-and-forth duo. Romantic KaeLisa's dynamic tends to be seen as all the platonic aspects put together, plus a romantic layer.

For example, Kaeya gets jealous that Lisa finds Albedo attractive in their voice lines. Lisa calls him “easy on the eyes.”

His own Albedo voice line calls her out in an indirect reply, saying that “some like him more than others,” and he sounds bitter about it, asking the Traveller. “What, are you into him, too?”

Lisa also appears to know that Kaeya and Diluc are brothers and share a complex history. Kaeya and Lisa’s relationship seems to mirror Diluc and Jean’s relationship. Both of these relationships have the potential to turn romantic.

Friends with Benefits and Friends To Lovers are common tropes used in their romantic portrayals.

-WIP-

Kaeya and Lisa differ in the ways they conduct themselves. Lisa finds herself reserving her energy and keeping things laid back. As Albedo notes, she appears to be intentionally limiting herself for a hidden reason.[14] Kaeya, on the other hand, finds himself expending his energy, and seeks to push the limits of himself and others.[15] While opposite, they both act in the name of enjoying the present moment, which is an aspect that shippers feel would be the core of Kaeya and Lisa's relationship. They would be a pair that strives to have fun in whatever form it took. Even during high-stress situations, such as combat, they would still find the amusement in it (while also fitting in banter and sassy remarks).

As stated prior, they both have an inclination for information and stories, both learning and sharing it. Lisa is notorious for being the prodigy graduate of Sumeru Akademiya. While she has since left Sumeru, Lisa ultimately chose to place herself in a hub of knowledge with her position as the Favonius Librarian. She has many stories to share and many things she is curious about. Kaeya is very much similar. For starters, he is described as the "strategic thinker" of the Knights of Favonius. And while it's not explicitly confirmed, there is a lot of evidence to support that he is a bookworm. This is due to his love of stories, and the fact that he keeps his intel list in a copy of The Adventures of Angelos.[16] Additionally, in one of his official birthday artworks, Kaeya was depicted to be reading on a couch while surrounded by multiple books.[17]

Perhaps the stories they tell are a way to deflect attention, because while Kaeya and Lisa are both outwardly charming and have no troubles discussing a variety of topics, they are incredibly avoidant when it comes to discussing themselves. Kaeya's story reveals that, to him, his only path is to "live the rest of his life under the heavy burden of lies."[18] Lisa's story mentions that she "sensed the deep secret hidden in the shadows" of the knowledge she sought, and the price it seemed to demand, which led to her growing fearful of the truth.[19] Some believe that Kaeya and Lisa would be able to a provide each other with support, allowing them to open up to a "bird of a feather" who would understand the weight of secrecy and could possibly offer words of advice. On a romantic level, their shared inclination towards secrecy also leads to an interpretation that they would likely prefer privacy in their relationship.

Because Kaeya and Lisa are equal on many levels when it comes to expressing and receiving affection, shippers feel they would be a well-suited couple. Many imagine that they would find enjoyment in simply spending time together, relaxing in a pleasant location, trying a new bottle of wine or sharing tea, with them talking for hours about everything and anything.

Curse Companions[]

One take on KaeLisa is that they are friends/lovers, but are both cursed and rapidly running out of time. The headcanon is inspired from the game's introduction of the Khaenri'ah curse - something that is potentially affecting Kaeya - as well as Lisa's limited lifespan curse (an early concept described by a product manager at HoYoverse).[20] While neither are confirmed to be canon, shippers have utilized the concepts in fanworks.

In Lisa's case, her lifespan is limited, while Kaeya faces immortality and the risk of turning into a monster of the Abyss. As such, Kaeya and Lisa - being aware of the other's curse - work together to make the most of the days they have left, by doing activities they always wanted to do. The scenarios tend to end in angst, however there are some hopeful resolutions where they put their minds together and figure out how to break their respective curses.

Some shippers have compared this version of KaeLisa to Howl/Sophie from the animated movie, Howl's Moving Castle (2004), due to the similar curse premises (Sophie/Lisa facing rapid aging and Howl/Kaeya turning into monsters).

Found Family[]

Razor and Fischl are seen by some as KaeLisa's unofficially adopted kids, specifically in the sense that Kaeya and Lisa would act as a duo of mentors for the two often isolated Electro characters.

Imagined scenarios for the group include:

  • Inside jokes that Fischl "inherited" Kaeya's eyepatch and investigative talent, and Lisa's love of the library and Electro capabilities.
  • Razor and Fischl training their Electro powers with Lisa, and combat proficiency with Kaeya.
  • Them having cozy storytelling nights and afternoon strolls outdoors.
  • Kaeya and Razor hunting together, as well as finding potion ingredients to surprise Lisa with.
  • Oz not needing to translate whenever Kaeya and Lisa are around, as both have read enough books to amass the amount of vocabulary required to understand Fischl.
  • Kaeya and Lisa working with Razor and Fischl on Knights of Favonius missions that require on-field searching. Two Favonius thinkers paired with Fischl (the Adventurer Guild's investigator) and Razor (skilled in hunting/tracking) would make for a quickly completed mission.
  • Kaeya and Lisa fervently supporting and hyping up both Razor and Fischl as the lovely Wolf Boy and Prinzessin they are.
  • Amusingly imbalanced conversations between Fischl and Razor when it comes to word count.
  • Bennett being seen by the adults as the close friend of their kids, with Kaeya training all three of them at some points. This is due to Bennett and Kaeya sharing similar attack animations, which has led some to imagine Bennett picking up Kaeya's fighting style.
  • A tradition of making Thousand-Wind Wine together every Weinlesefest.

Drinking and Reading Buddies[]

It is established that Kaeya and Lisa like visiting taverns and drinking, and some feel they would also enjoy hanging out at the library and trading book recommendations due to the possibility that Kaeya may enjoy reading as much as Lisa does.

Making the Traveler a Responsible Library Visitor[]

Their canon-supported dynamic of relieving each other's workload has led some to interpret Kaeya's voice-line about Lisa as yet another way of making her job easier. By spooking the Traveler with the story of his arm still being numb from when he returned his book late, Kaeya convinces one more person to return their books on time. It is likely he told that story to many others in Mondstadt as well, helping build up a fearsome reputation for the resident librarian, and in turn, easing her workload.

How true the story is in the end is a matter for debate, as Kaeya has a talent for convincing people of things that might not be entirely true. Yes, Lisa is a truly formidable individual, and Kaeya does recognize that by what he had said about her in Midsummer Island Adventure: III. However, when it comes to collecting overdue library books, Lisa's own Story Quest has shown she doesn't zap people who are running late.[21] The only moment she had electrocuted someone over one of the library books was with the Abyss Mage, who had refused to return the book and threatened to reveal its secrets.[22] The more people perceive Lisa as someone who easily summons thunderstorms and becomes terrifying when collecting overdue books, the less she has to go chasing after people. What quicker way for that perception to become the norm than to spread a story? This interpretation falls in line with Kaeya's relation to storytelling and strategic thinking, as well as Lisa's actual actions, and their calm and friendly dynamic outside that story.

Trivia[]

  • 🦚⏳ / 💙💜 / ❄️⚡ are emojis often paired with each other in reference to KaeLisa. The first symbolizes their constellations, the second is based on their color schemes, and the third represents their elements.
  • Kaeya and Lisa are offered together in the event Fate Foretold.[23] The event's screen displays them side-by-side.
  • Both Kaeya and Lisa have "afternoon" beverages they enjoy drinking. For Kaeya, it's his favorite drink, known as Death After Noon. For Lisa, it's her afternoon tea.
“In that case, I'd like a Death After Noon...”
— Kaeya, to the Traveler.
“I'd quite like to invite you to afternoon tea.”
— Lisa, to the Traveler.
  • They are the only two characters to have their constellation name as their namecard title.[24][25]
  • Their arms make similar motions during their elemental bursts, with them first reaching up, and then moving quickly out to the sides as the element unleashes. Additionally, their splash arts have similar stances, with both of their right legs being raised in addition to having their arms out and elements circling around them.
  • On Lisa's 2021 birthday, she had gifted the Traveler calla lilies, Kaeya's ascension material.[26]
  • Both use Ballad talent books.
  • When color-inverted, Kaeya and Lisa appear to swap hair colors, revealing that their hair colors are complimentary opposites according to color theory.
  • During the Of Drink A-Dreaming event, Lisa asks the Traveler (who was participating in a bartending class) to make a drink called Love Poem.[27] A year prior, the Invitation of Windblume event had shown Kaeya enrolling in Venti's love poem class, as well as convincing the bard to assign 'make a love poem' as the homework.[28]
  • Paimon's Paintings: Set 13 introduced new Kaeya and Lisa chibi emojis, and the two were presented next to each other in the set's showcase.[29]
  • Following the world quest series Through the Mists, Kama and Sumida can be found in two locations for post-quest dialogues: Liyue and Mondstadt. These dialogues have small references to both Kaeya and Lisa, which could also be seen as hints for their individual character directions.
    • In Mondstadt, they discuss Lisa while at the Favonius Library. Kama mentions that the "librarian has an immense aura around her," while Sumida replies that she "thought [Lisa] was a rather typical, slightly-lazy witch" and later retracts her initial impression by saying "these characters do tend to be the strongest ... best not to get on her bad side."[30]
    • In Liyue, Kama and Sumida are shown to be browsing trinkets at a shop. Among these, Sumida notices a vase in particular, and brings up how it'd make for good writing material. She proceeds to give an example of how it could be used for her work by saying, "The key to the turnaround was a Vision concealed within the vase!" Later, she elaborates that "any descriptions of this vase should be well-controlled. If you spend too much time on it, the foreshadowing will become quite apparent. But at the same time, mentioning it too little will make that development seem abrupt."[31] The writing concept that Sumida presented, of a Vision being concealed in a vase, is a subtle reference to Diluc finding his own Vision in the vase that Kaeya had gifted (with the vase itself generally being associated with Kaeya).[32] As this post-quest dialogue focuses on the vase's description rather than the concept of a Vision being concealed in it, it could be seen as a reference to Kaeya specifically.
  • During the Eight Locales Over Mountains and Seas event, Kaeya and Lisa were both referenced - by name - twice.[33][34] This was considerably unique when compared to the other character references during the event, which weren't as apparent.
  • During the Children of Vimara Village quest, Kaeya and Lisa were both referenced as story options to tell the children.[35]
    • In the dialogue with Kavus, the Traveler has the option to say, "We ran across the grandson of some pirate." This draws back to when Kaeya claimed to have a pirate grandfather.
    • In the dialogue with Sudabeh, the Traveler has the option to say, "In a place far away, there was a library..." Paimon proceeds to acknowledge Lisa as being the one related to the library far away.
  • The two share some similarities in appearance:
    • They both have tied hair, which rests over their left shoulders.
    • They both wear only one earring, on their left ears.
    • Both of their outfits sport Khaenri'ah star symbols. With Kaeya's outfit, they are on his sleeve, waist, and gloves, while Lisa's outfit has them hidden on the inner side of her skirt.
  • The fanon KaeLisa family have all been canonically related to the concept of fate in some way.
    • Kaeya and Lisa (are offered in the event Fate Foretold.)
    • Razor (introduces and is related to the concept of lupical, which means a fated family.)[36]
    • Fischl ("observes and weaves the threads of fate.").[37]
  • In Chapter 16 of the Genshin Impact Manga, Kaeya wears a white suit.[38] The lapel pin (a blue rose with 'wings' emerging from it) is very similar to Lisa's hat decoration.
