MidZel is the femslash ship between Midna and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda fandom.

Canon[]

Twilight Princess[]

Sometime after both Midna and Zelda had their kingdoms taken away from them by Zant, Midna came to Hyrule to find an ancient powerful magic that could help her defeat him, and had someway came across Zelda at the twilight covered castle of Hyrule. Unlike the rest of her people, the twilight didn't turn Zelda into a spirit. This made her stand out to Midna, who is a being of Twilight but kept her true identity as the true ruler of the Twilight Realm, as its princess, a secret from the Hylian princess. After Midna found the blue eyes beast who is said to save her realm, and is also the hero that is said to save Zelda's realm of light, the Twili freed Link and brought him to Zelda, who Midna calls the "Twilight Princess", so Zelda can explain things to him before Midna and Link can start their journey. While Zelda remains within the twilight covered castle.

Midna's time traveling throughout Zelda's home realm and kingdom allowed her to appreciate it than she original did, due to the bad history between their home realms before coming to Zelda's. Shortly after Midna and Link retrieved the Fused Shadow from the Lakebed Temple, Zant injures Midna with the light from Hyrule's realm to serve as a cruel message as to why the two realms can't be at peace with each other. With some help the Light Spirit, Lanayru, she and Link mange to get away from the Usurper King, and once they were on the grounds of Hyrule field Midna asks Link to bring her to Zelda. In hopes that the princess can remove the curse that Zant placed on Link. Once they made it back to Zelda's room the princess begins to attend to the nearing death Twili, as she begs Zelda to help Link get access to the Mirror of Twilight so he can stop Zant without her. Midna's words allowed Zelda to discover who Midna truly is and decides to grant her light-filled soul to the Twili, despite Midna begging Zelda not to until it was too late. Once Midna was healed Zelda disappeared to which has Midna claim, "I have taken everything you had to give... though I did not want it." With Zelda gone and didn't want her sacrifice to be in vain, in which begins to change her attitude, she and Link set off to find the Master Sword. Thanks to Zelda's sacrifice, Minda is able to have protect from Hyrule's life without the need to transform into her shadow form.

After defeating Zant, Midna knew that Hyrule was still in danger from Ganondorf and raced back to Hyrule Castle alongside Link only to find Zelda floating in an unconscious state, with Ganon sat on the throne. Ganondorf moves to fill Zelda's body with dark magic (so he could force her to attack Link), but Midna tries to protect Zelda from possession by sacrificing herself, flying up to take in the dark magic herself and attempting to shield her body with her own. However, this fails and the magic just passes through her body into Zelda. Looking distressed, Midna quickly turns to face Zelda and assumes an offensive stance, looking ready to attack. But her expression softens, shifting her eyes sadly and placing her hand on Zelda's cheek. Midna was aware that Ganondorf had corrupted Zelda, but couldn't seem to bring herself to hurt Zelda. Zelda awakens as Ganon's Puppet and throws Midna across the room, knocking her unconscious. After the boss battle, Midna wakes up and uses the Fused Shadows to eradicate Ganon's presence from Zelda, freeing her from possession and placing her out of harm's way.

After defeating Dark Beast Ganon, the light-filled soul Zelda had given Midna returns to her. Midna appears taken aback, stammering but Zelda cuts her off, telling her to "say no more." With a somber but gentle expression, Zelda explains that her and Midna's hearts were as one briefly, and she understands all the suffering Midna's endured. Midna's expression softens and she shuts her eyes. Zelda looks like she's about to say something to her but is interrupted by Ganon. Sacrificing herself once more, Midna chose to hold Ganondorf off, warping Zelda and Link to safety.

Later, at the Mirror of Twilight, Midna appears to have been returned to her true form, the Twilight Princess. She intends to leave, stating to Zelda and Link that "light and shadow cannot mix, as [they] all know" but to "never forget that there's another world bound to this one." Zelda refutes this, saying that "shadow and light are two sides of the same coin" and cannot exist without the other. She explains that she believes the Goddesses left the Mirror of Twilight so they could meet. Midna looks up, smiling and says that "[her] words are kind, and [her] heart is true" and that if everybody in Hyrule was like her, then maybe things will work out fine. Midna lingers for a moment, still looking at Zelda with a small smile, before turning away. Zelda's eyes widen in surprise and appears touched by Midna's words. Midna goes onto explain that they can still see each other again as long as the mirror remains.

After thanking them, Midna bids farewell to Zelda and Link with a smile and they watch in silence as she returns through the mirror, shattering it with her tear as she goes through.

Hyrule Warriors[]

In the special series of the Legend of Zelda games that brings the Zelda timelines of Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword together in the game's timeline, Midna fights along side Zelda and their other past and present allies as one of their allies from the Twilight era, along with Agitha.

Fanon[]

This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.

MidZel has a small amount of popularity within the Legend of Zelda fandom, and is considered the rival ship of Midlink. Whenever fans ship Zelda and Midna together, they commonly have Midna as her true self instead of her cursed form state that she first met Zelda in. The MidZelda backstory involving young Midna and Zelda in the Zelda manga of Twilight Princess, along with one of the Linkle chapter levels in Hyrule Warriors having Zelda and Twili Minda aiding one another, has helped the ship to gain some more loyal supporters.

On AO3, the ship has only 101 fanfics as of April 2021.

Trivia[]

  • In the manga of Twilight Princess, Zelda and Midna had first met as children through magical reflecting objects in their separate worlds, a fountain and a mirror-like stone as they talk to each other through them, until Zelda's father sealed the fountain once he learned of its magic. Because of this Midna began to believe that Zelda had forgotten about her.
  • Hyrule Warriors series can have Zelda and Mina to either fight beside each other or against one another, depending on the player's choice or map level. Along with there being two versions of Midna, and the levels that have players pick three characters to play as can have Zelda fight beside both Midnas. While one of Zelda's costume skins in the game is of her TP self.
  • Many fans find Zelda's line "Shadow and light are two sides of the same coin... One cannot exist without the other" to be an allusion to Midna and Zelda, symbolizing the relationship between the two. Shadow represents Twilight and, by extension, the Twilight Princess, while Light represents Zelda's light-filled soul she had granted Midna.
