Monokumi is the family/het ship between Monomi and Monokuma from the Danganronpa fandom.

Canon[]

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair[]

Monokumi and Monomi have their first interaction in the prologue of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The player first meets Monomi when she introduces herself "Usami", the lead teacher and chaperone of the field trip. Just as she begins to help the students get used to the island she is interrupted by Monokuma. The two begin to brawl and despite Usami's magical powers Monokuma emerges victorious. He then takes away Usami's "magical" abilities, changes her appearence, and renamed her "Monomi". Monokuma then demonstrates his newfound power by commanding his Monobeasts to execute her, though she later respawns.

Monokuma continues to fight against Monomi by attempting to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of the students. He does this by telling half-truths that paint Monomi in a poor light, stating there is a traitor among them that removed all of the students' school memories. Because of Monomi's similar appearence to Monokuma, and the latters insistance that they're siblings, the students began to distrust Monomi.

Monokuma's torture of Monomi continues when he forces her to attend Class Trials. Along with being forced to watch her students condemn each other to death, Monomi was tied in rope and suspended from the ceiling.

In the fifth chapter when Monomi's sister Chiaki Nanami (AI) is voted guilty and sentenced to execution, Monomi makes one final act against Monokuma. In an attempt to destroy Monokuma for good, Monomi grabs hold of Monokuma and self-destructs. Because of their spares, they respawned several times and repeated this process until Monokuma revealed his ridiculos amount of spares that made her attacks futile.

As punishment for her attempted murder, and because Monomi is not a student and therefore not bound by the rules of the killing game, Monomi was executed alongside Chiaki Nanami.

Monomi is later reactivated when the students initiate the shutdown sequence for the Neo World Program. There she reappears as Usami and destroys the gigantic avatar of Junko Enoshima that represents the virus infecting the simulation and Monokuma by extension.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School[]

In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, Usami is an avatar of Miaya Gekkogahara, rather than her own AI. Like in Danganronpa 2, Monokuma then appears and attacks her, turning her into Monomi.

Usami and Monokuma make additional appearances in Danganronpa 1.2 Reload, released approximately a year after Danganronpa 2. Within Reload they appear in both alternate universe games, School Mode and Island Mode. Additionally, Usami, Monomi, and Monokuma are featured again in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony's endgame bonus mode Ultimate Talent Development Plan. These are all considered semi-canon due to game play taking place in an alternate universe.

School Mode[]

In Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc's bonus mode students are tasked with building Monokuma spare bodies. The final assignment is to build a single "Warlockuma", a robot that greatly resembles Usami. If the player suceeeds in building all assigned backups, including Warlockuma, it will trigger a scene where the backup comes to life and introduces herself as Usami. Monokuma and Usami begin to argue until Usami attacks Monokuma until he agrees to free the students.

Island Mode[]

In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair's bonus game mode, the prologue progresses as it did in the original, up until Monokuma and Usami's alteracation. This time Usami defeats Monokuma in their brawl and is not turned into Monomi.

Ultimate Talent Development Plan[]

In UTDP Monokuma and Usami/Monomi are equally matched in terms of strength, neither having the power to remove the other from the situation. Because of this they continue to quarrel and even get into more physical altercations. Monomi spends much of her time trying to thwart Monokuma's meddling and interference of school events with mixed results. Along with school and administration related fights, they get into many personal spats.

Despite their fighting, Monokuma and Monomi worked together multiple times during the school festival. They host a talk show and another unnamed event in the gym that is never elaborated on because Genocide Jack leaves before it can begin.

Fanon[]

Due to their questionable relationship status, there are multiple interpretations of their dynamic. They are most commonly viewed as siblings as a result of Monokuma's constant insistence that they are, barring the times he briefly "disowns" Monomi.

Romantic[]

There is a romantic ship between the two because they are robots and Monokuma's "adopting" of Monomi is constantly rejected by her and held no in-universe legal binding. They also have different creators. Monokuma was created by Junko Enoshima and Monoca Towa, while Usami was originally created by Miaya Gekkogahara and Chihiro Fujisaki. The small community of shippers enjoy their ongoing fued as an "Enemies to Lovers" type situation. Within this community there is an interpretation of Monomi as the mother of the Monokubs. Despite their dynamic being more balanced when Monomi is known as Usami, it seems to be less popular due to Usami's limited screen time with Monokuma.

Family[]

Despite Monomi's denial of their relation, it remains a common interpretation. This is further enforced by Monokuma's existence in Danganronpa 2, in which he is operated by or possibly is another Artificial Intelligence that utilized the same code as one of Chihiro's other creations, Alter Ego.

Technicalities aside, their frequent bickering greatly resembles a childish sibling relationship complete with teasing, bullying, and all the violence of being forced to live in close proximity with someone they despise. It is because of their turbulent relationship that many do not like the ship, believing Monomi should not have to be subjected to Monokuma's abuse.

It is a common trend to draw Monokuma and Monomi as humans for all versions of the ship.

Trivia[]

  • School Mode, Island Mode, and Usami's route in Ultimate Talent Development Plan are the only versions of canon where Monokuma does not succeed in making Usami his pseudo-sister.
  • Monokuma considers Monomi to be the aunt of the Monokubs, though she denies this relation as well.
  • Monomi and Monokuma are frequently featured in merch together, though very rarely Monokuma is featured alongside Usami.
  • Both, along with Byakuya Togami, Chihiro Fujisaki, Junko Enoshima, and Makoto Naegi, are the only characters who appeared in every main installement in one way or another.
    • In their case, Monokuma hosts all of the killing games (except for the Student Council's one, back when he was just a concept in Junko's notebook and a plushie) and appears as various Monokuma Units in Ultra Despair Girls. Meanwhile, Usami/Monomi has a cameo appearance in the True End of School Mode in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, is a part of the main cast in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, has a cameo appearance on a building at the end of Ultra Despair Girls, appears on Miaya Gekkogahara's screen in Future Arc and is held by Chiaki Nanami in Hope Arc, and appears in Ultimate Talent Development Plan, the bonus mode of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
