Owagami is the slash ship between Byakuya Togami and Mondo Owada from the Danganronpa fandom.

Canon[]

Both characters greatly resent each other. While Byakuya enjoys teasing Mondo, Mondo finds Byakuya irritating. Mondo also appears to take issue with Byakuya's cold and dismissive attitude more than any of the other students, often threatening him with physical violence whenever his patience is tested by the affluent progeny. Because of the hostility in their relationship, the two have almost never been able to get along with each other.

Towards the beginning of the first chapter, after the students have all gone over the rules of the Killing School Life and are about to begin exploring the school, Byakuya announces that he will be going alone, due to the possibility that someone among them may have already planned on committing murder. Mondo is against this, and tells Byakuya that he isn't going to let him run off and do whatever he wants. Byakuya tells Mondo to get out of his way, referring to him as "plankton." When Mondo asks what he means, Byakuya says that he is like a bit of plankton drifting across the sea that couldn't possibly have any influence over the boundless ocean. Mondo then threatens to beat Byakuya up, but Makoto Naegi intervenes in their dispute.

Following the murder of Sayaka Maizono, Mondo offers to be on guard duty, but Byakuya says that they can't just leave him alone at the crime scene. When Mondo asks why they can't, Byakuya answers that if he were the culprit, then by volunteering to be on guard duty, he'd be in a position to destroy all the evidence he wants, which angers Mondo.

In Chapter 2, the remaining students all look for Byakuya when he does not show up at the breakfast meeting. Mondo searches in the locker room next to the bathhouse, and comments that Byakuya has "his head so far up his ass" that he doesn't know what's going on with him. Eventually, the group finds Byakuya in the library on the second floor, reading a mystery novel. When asked if he'll take inspiration from the novel to betray them, Byakuya answers that he'll come up with something original, as he views their current situation as a "high-stakes, high-tension activity," and so he wants to make it entertaining. This infuriates Mondo, who tells Byakuya that it's fucked up to view their predicament as a "game." After boldly stating that it isn't possible for him to end up dead, Mondo asks Byakuya who he thinks he is, before Byakuya says that he still can't believe an "uneducated, brain-dead, useless piece of garbage" like him has survived this long. After this, Mondo threatens to kill Byakuya, but Byakuya once again arrogantly states that he won't die. Byakuya's viewpoint of the killing game is also rejected by Chihiro Fujisaki, who tells Byakuya that being forced to kill your friends is horrific. But Byakuya tells him that they aren't friends, they're enemies. When Chihiro meekly tries to say something in response, Byakuya tells him to keep his mouth shut and accept what he's saying. This angers Mondo even further, who asks if Byakuya gets off on bullying people who can't fight back, and if he wants to try that on him, but Byakuya remains unfazed by his words, and continues to taunt him.

Later on, the group finds Chihiro dead inside of the girls' locker room, with his corpse suspended above the ground. Mondo is enraged by how Byakuya calls Chihiro's dead body an "object," and tells him to show some respect. Mondo also tells Byakuya to shut up when he suggests that another murder may take place. During the Class Trial, Byakuya unintentionally helps Mondo, who is the culprit behind Chihiro's murder, by drawing attention to Toko Fukawa and her alternate personality, Genocide Jack, claiming that they were the ones who killed the victim. In reality however, Byakuya knew all along that Mondo was the killer, having witnessed his actions the night prior, and tampered with the crime scene to make the case more interesting. Mondo was further angered by Byakuya's admission that he altered the crime scene. After it was revealed that Mondo was the culprit, Kiyotaka Ishimaru refuses to believe that Mondo had a secret that he would kill in order to keep, prompting Byakuya to state that just because he couldn't comprehend it, Mondo obviously could. Byakuya showed no sympathy for Mondo after he was executed, and even calls him a fool for failing to notice that he witnessed his crime.

Byakuya and Mondo share one event together in Ultimate Talent Development Plan. During the sports festival, Byakuya asks if Mondo is nervous about being the captain of the basketball team, and Mondo angrily replies that he was just thinking about how he didn't want Byakuya on his team. Byakuya responds that he is all bark and no bite, and Mondo replies that everything Byakuya says pisses him off, and that he can't promise he won't snap at him during the game. Byakuya arrogantly says that if he can't manage to win the game, he doesn't deserve his Ultimate title, which further irritates Mondo, but also motivates him.

Fanon[]

Owagami mainly sailed from the rivalry between the two characters. Some fans are also compelled by how the two characters are polar opposites in a unique way, with how even though Mondo is a rebellious biker gang leader, he displays a larger sense of morality and decency than Byakuya, the formal aristocrat. However, having one of the most heated conflicts between any two characters in the Danganronpa franchise, the ship between Byakuya and Mondo is not a popular one for either character. While the ship does have a small group of supporters who enjoy the "enemies to lovers" trope, it ultimately loses in popularity to several of both characters' more popular shipping choices, such as Naegami and Togafuka for Byakuya, and Chimondo and Ishimondo for Mondo. There are just over thirty results for the ship on Archive of our Own.
