“There is only one such place in this world. A place that doesn't need you at all. Join the Detective Agency. We don't want your ability. What we want is that "kindness". You didn't wish for anyone's death, right? That's why you're suffering so much. We want to invite you because of that "kindness" of yours. To lose that ability would be alright. There's worth to this suffering.”
— Ranpo comforting and inviting Yosano to the Detective Agency when they first met

Ranposano is the het ship between Ranpo Edogawa and Akiko Yosano from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.

Canon[]

Ranpo and Yosano work alongside each other in the Armed Detective Agency, often teaming up on missions and fighting alongside one another. They're shown to be close as Ranpo anticipates Yosano's quirks and hobbies, the two often playing hanafuda and sharing friendly rapport.

Yosano places great trust in Ranpo's abilities and shows gratitude for his unwavering kindness when they first met. She greatly appreciates how Ranpo was the one who invited Yosano to the agency and the one who broke her out of her trance-like depressive stupor. It's shown Ranpo truly cares for Yosano, seeing as he was affected greatly by Yosano's 'death' in Poe's book even while knowing it wasn't real. He solved said case without his 'ability' for the first time.

Hunting Dogs Arc - Yosano's Past[]

Yosano's numbness face while watching Fukuzawa and Mori fight over her

Yosano's numb face.

Fourteen years ago, near the end of the Great War, the 11-year-old Yosano served as a military hospital scholar alongside Mori, erstwhile a military physician for the National Defense Force, and utilized her ability to heal soldiers from death. Over and over as they went insane from being trapped in the battlefield, once the soldier who gifted Yosano her gold adornment committed suicide and denounced her, she was kept isolated in a facility after she attempted to bomb and sink the ship. Yosano lost all hope in both living and any sign of a clearer future. Four years later, Fukuzawa clashed with Mori, disgusted by the prospect of using Yosano's ability again. As a result, Fukuzawa faught over the custody of Yosano, and got the 14-year-old out.

During that, Fukuzawa had Ranpo escort Yosano met on a wheelchair and escape with her. Yosano was quiet and unfazed by everything, dull and emotionless.

Yosano's emotional face

Yosano's face when Ranpo gave her the hairclip.

Yosano breaks the silence and asks Ranpo to take her back to Mori, explaining how she can't go on living. However, Ranpo interrupts her saying it's stupid as Yosano is startled, jumping a little and showing a sign of slight emotion. Yosano remains somber as she explains it feels like it's her fault the lives of others around her were regarded as nothing but cheap. Ranpo has a comedic air as he lightheartedly explains that if she hates her ability so much, she simply shouldn't use it. He assures her that his Ultra-Deduction is the world's greatest, and that there'd be no need for Yosano's ability to be called on ever because of him.

Yosano, hopeless, doesn't believe him. With a laugh he announces he can prove it, and by using his ‘Ultra-Deduction’ he gives her the gold butterfly hairclip which the soldier gave Yosano as a gift. Ranpo deduces that it meant a lot to her. That was the first time after years where Yosano’s numb face was broken as she widened her eyes and grabbed the pendant, shocked.

Join-the-detective-agency

Ranpo recruits Yosano to join the ADA.

She asked Ranpo how he know about the butterfly hairclip when she never told a single soul about it. He happily said that he found it in the wreckage and that could see through everything, and she could pose any kind of question.

So Yosano asked him what she could do from now on, shaken as she explains it was her fault someone close to her had died. Yosano asks Ranpo if there's a place where it's okay for her to go on living. Ranpo said he has already told her. He tells Yosano that there's only one place that doesn't require her ability or care for it at all - The Detective Agency.

Yosano was freed from suffering and despair

Yosano freed from suffering and despair.

Ranpo, sincere, tells her that they don't want her ability, and what they want "is that kindness". He tells her she didn't want anyone to die by her hands, and that kindness is what mattered. After Yosano heard Ranpo's words, she couldn't hold back the tears and at that moment, she was freed from the suffering and despair she endured and began to cry. He was the first person who told her that it's her feelings that matter, that her kindness mattered; not her ability, unlike Mori who used her as a tool. and the soldiers who scorned her and never viewed her for the kind person she truly was.

During the Hunting Dogs Arc, When Yosano is telling Kenji and Junichirou of this past, she remembers her conversation with Ranpo and smiles before she's broken from her trance by Junichiro. We see here how much Ranpo affected her and showed her the light in inviting her to Detective Agency.

Port Mafia Arc[]

In Chapter 7, Yosano and Ranpo seem to know each other well, with Ranpo correctly anticipating Yosano's quirks and hobbies like asking someone in the Agency to accompany her shopping. Ranpo says that that ability to notice dangerous is a good one, "For example, 10 seconds from now...", just as Ranpo trails off, Yosano walks into the room with a yawn, asking if Atsushi is hurt, then asks if Atsushi would help her with shopping since he's the only one here, Atsushi turns around, confused when he sees everyone is gone, recalling them talking about the ability to sense danger.

In Chapter 21, on casual occasions and even during the Guild war, Ranpo invited Yosano to play a game with him, particularly hanafuda, while Yosano accepted and fiercely asked what their wagers shall be.

The Guild Arc[]

Ranpo and Yosano arrive at Poe's location.

Yosano accompanies Ranpo to confront the one behind the "invitation to a deduction game", commenting it's most likely a trap. They reach the room, meeting Edgar Allan Poe. She continues to deduce that this is a trap even after Ranpo agrees to it, but Poe invites her to participate as well. Yosano proceeds to read the mystery with Ranpo, sucked into the book's world by Poe's ability, appearing in a different room from Ranpo, and in a traditional doctor's uniform. She finds him with the body, rushing to save the victim, who's alive enough to point out a door in the room.

In the aftermath, Yosano realizes that her ability doesn't work in Poe's book. Ranpo insisted that he has an ability and that abilities could not be used in the book world so he can't solve the case. Later on, Ranpo confirms it as an 'impossible crime'. Noticing Ranpo's poor demeanor despite knowing the ins and outs of the crime, questioning why he doesn't use Super Deduction to solve the mystery. Ranpo points out he doesn't have his glasses, required to "activate" his ability, which wouldn't work anyway given that Yosano can't use hers either. Aware Ranpo has no ability, Yosano plays along, suggesting they solve the crime through normal means. Unfortunately, this greatly displeases Ranpo, who detests the tedium behind normal investigative methods.

Yosano's death in the book.

They decide to ask other people in the room. The guests begin to theorize and argue, thinning out Ranpo's patience. He snaps and corrects them on the case's true details and reaches his own conclusion, and Yosano praises him but conflicted, Ranpo storms off.

Yosano follows him, pointing out Ranpo already knows his skills aren't an ability. In denial, he questions if Fukuzawa lied to him. Knowing how much Fukuzawa means to Ranpo, Yosano doesn't push him. She leaves him be, returning to her room, locking it, using an ax for protection, knowing the serial murders will continue. Although seemingly prepared, Yosano overheard a strange noise, attacked by an unseen assailant.

The guests and Ranpo crowd in her room, finding Yosano with the ax in her abdomen. Ranpo shows immense shock and horror, using his left hand to hold Yosano's shoulder and using his right hand to hold her left. When she was about to die, she placed her trust in the great detective for whom the Agency was established, saying that the ADA was found so Ranpo could make good use of his talent which made him look straight at her with his eyes wide open.

Ranpo's expression to Yosano's "death"

Ranpo's expression at Yosano's death.

In the last moments, Yosano thanked Ranpo for recruiting her to the organization, told him she was still "very grateful" even to that day. As Yosano "died", Ranpo froze, then gnashed his teeth, took her glasses, wore them himself and solved the case, bringing the two out alive out of the book with an unharmed with Yosano. Ranpo finds out it is the first time he solved the case without relying on his glasses and "ability".

After that, as Ranpo and Yosano are walking back, Yosano mentions that Ranpo doesn't actually have an ability. Ranpo declines and insists he has an ability, telling her not to call him normal. He was embarrassed that he would look stupid if he turned out to be normal now, after all the time thinking he was gifted. That makes Yosano laugh as Ranpo tells her not to. She said, "Fine, fine" and he complained, "No 'Fine, fine' either." In this scene we see their bond and friendly banter.

Official BSD Anthology[]

In Anthology 5 Chapter 10, Ranpo and Atsushi enter the room and see Yosano who is trying her new clothes and Naomi with Kyouka who help her with it. Atsushi asks what they are doing while Ranpo is not very interested in it and just asks about pastries. Then, he asks If they are playing dress up with Yosano-san. Naomi denies it and explains that they went shopping and found so many clothes so Yosano had just to try it. Kyouka shows Ranpo and Atsushi the photos of Yosano in her new styles.

Later, Naomi tries to take her hair clip but Yosano reacts to that very fast. She go off from her touching her hair clip. Yosano apologizes for it and afterwards, Naomi together with Kyouka and Atsushi go to develop the photos and leave Yosano together with Ranpo.

Ranpo notices that her hair clip is very important for her.

Yosano says that it seems like those three are having a good time and asks Ranpo if he can see it. However, without giving an answer to her question, Ranpo tells Yosano that her current clothing suits her the best. Yosano is surprised. Ranpo adds:

“If it's a hair ornament you're going to wear all the time, you can decise what to wear accordingly.”
— Ranpo to Yosano

Ranpo asks if her hair clip is really important to her as he noticed. Yosano fell silent for a short time but later tells him that it is best to leave her usual style of clothing as he advised.

Fanon[]

Ranposano is one of the most popular hetero ships in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. Ranposano’s biggest rival ship is Ranpo’s most popular ship Ranpoe. Some Ranposano shippers believe Ranpo would have a healthier relationship with Yosano over Poe, due to the fact that Ranpo does not reciprocate Poe's affection and admiration. As a correlation, a majority of the fanbase sees Ranpo and Yosano as a good example of friendship and found family and see Ranpo as an older brother figure for Yosano.

Ranposano as a romantic ship was rather unheard of for a short while due to their minimal interactions, as it was mainly when Yosano’s past with Ranpo was revealed when as romantic, the ship gained recognition. The telling of Yosano's past changed the opinions of some people who preferred it as friendship and started see them in a romantic way. Ranpo being the first to value Yosano and show her the light, giving her a place to belong and the hope of living was enough of a reason for fans to see Ranposano as a reasonable ship. It is very common for fans to interpret and headcanon that Yosano had an admiration turned crush on Ranpo after she joined the agency, and fans like to expand on how their friendship developed off-screen throughout the years.
