Ranpoe is the slash ship between Ranpo Edogawa and Edgar Allan Poe from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.

Canon[]

Poe and Ranpo first met six years before the main story takes place. The two of them were in an investigation competition against each other, and Ranpo beat Poe, making the latter fall into depression and cast himself away. Poe harbored great anger over his defeat and vowed to have revenge on Ranpo and surpass him. Because of that, Poe soon joined the Guild in order to challenge Ranpo with his new writing capabilities and spent years creating a mystery Ranpo would be unable to solve. Poe has great respect and awe towards Ranpo’s abilities, while Ranpo acknowledges Poe’s skill and stated that he was the only detective who was on par with him. The two are currently allied and are on good terms.

Poe & Ranpo’s first on-screen interaction is during the Guild Arc when Poe sends Ranpo a letter inviting him to a challenge during the three-way struggle between the Armed Detective Agency, the Port Mafia, and the Guild. When Ranpo and Akiko Yosano arrived, Poe had started to monologue on how his defeat by Ranpo’s hands had shaped who he was to this day and affected him greatly. While announcing this Ranpo interrupts and comically asks who Poe is, which saddened Poe greatly. Poe then revealed his motive for inviting the two to a “Deduction Game”, making a deal; he shows Ranpo and Yosano a new novel he had written, and if the two could solve the mystery behind the story, he would reveal the Guild's weaknesses.

Ranpo was confused as to why he would let a smart detective like him to solve such a simple problem to get some intel about the Guild, but then, Poe used his ability to trap Ranpo and Yosano inside the book. Poe is confident that Ranpo won’t be able to solve it. Throughout the scene, he laughs maniacally over his revenge, thinking he had successfully killed and foiled Ranpo. However, when Ranpo escapes the book in ease with Yosano, Poe is shocked, asking how he solved the impossible case. Ranpo explains how he figured it out while Poe is taken aback. Ranpo tells Poe that he was the first detective that he thought was almost on par with him, which makes Poe speechless and excited that he was acknowledged.

After the Guild Arc, Poe often asked Ranpo for help in difficult cases. During the Cannibalism Arc, Poe used his ability to assist the agency upon Ranpo’s request.

Later on, during the Perfect Crime Arc, Poe had bought a manuscript from an auction and was going to pick it up, then ends up meeting Ranpo in the building, who is currently in a bear costume and doing volunteer work to make up for disobeying the President during the Cannibalism. Poe tells him that he's looking for an envelope to find, and after some banter between the two such as Ranpo insulting Poe’s lack of friends, they look towards the window and see it along with a body falling outside. They go down to investigate, throwing ideas back at each other as they progressively solve the murder. When Ranpo is about to use his Ultra Deduction to figure out the culprit, exciting Poe greatly (to the point Minoura calls Poe a fanboy), but before he can, all evidence of the scene is wiped, and Ranpo finds nothing.

Ranpo sits on some nearby steps, upset, and Poe goes to console him, only to find that Ranpo is still chipper as ever about finding the culprit. He then calls Poe on his phone as he's in the car with the culprit so that he can listen in on their conversation, exposing the culprit’s plan immediately. Poe helps Ranpo with temporarily apprehending the culprit by using his ability to trap the culprit and Ranpo in a phone from a text message that Poe wrote to negotiate with the culprit.

In the Kamui Revelation Arc, Ranpo seeks Poe’s assistance in rescuing Agency members who were set up for assassination. As a result, Ranpo disguises himself as Kamui and Poe disguises himself so they can follow the jailed Yukichi Fukuzawa to a rooftop, where they eventually abandon their disguises and reveal how they coordinated to get the targeted Agency members to safety. Poe admits to being the sniper who allowed Ranpo's rescue of Kunikida, the one who prepared the car that led to Ranpo's rescue of Yosano from execution, and the one who arranged for Katai to be evacuated to a safe location using his ability. Though Ranpo cuts him off, Poe affirms his desire to assist in the case, as do the others whom Ranpo promises are awaiting the President's orders.

Fanon[]

Ranpoe is one of the most popular ships in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom, and the most popular ship for both Ranpo and Poe. The pairing sailed mostly, because of Poe's strong admiration for Ranpo, and Ranpo treating Poe as one of his few close friends and an almost equally worthy detective as him. Fans also ship them because of the classic "rivals to lovers" trope, which shows Poe viewing Ranpo as a rival following their last encounter six years ago in a certain murder case. That's why most fans would make jokes that Poe has a "crush" on Ranpo, especially after it was revealed that he had been writing a novel for the previous six years in order for Ranpo to get close to him through revenge.

This ship is frequently shipped alongside Soukoku, Shin Soukoku, and Fyolai. Ranpoe’s main rival ship is Ranposano. On AO3, it is the 3rd most written ship in the Bungou Stray Dogs tag and the 1st most written for both characters.

Trivia[]

  • The real life Ranpo Edogawa respected and admired Edgar Allan Poe greatly. This was reversed in Bungou Stray Dogs.
  • The real Ranpo’s actual name was Hirai Tarou, and he chose his pen name because it sounded similar to "Edgar Allan Poe." Ellery Queen wrote, "If you say the name Edogawa Ranpo aloud, and keep repeating it, the name will seem to grow more and more familiar; and it should, because it is a verbal translation of the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allan Poe."
    • On some levels, Ranpo's first story, "The Two-Sen Copper Coin," is a literal reinterpretation of Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Gold Bug."
  • Ranpo often spends his leisure time these days by going to Poe's house, eating some candy, and going home.[1]
  • Poe is 182cm (6'0") tall, while Ranpo is 168cm (5'6"), giving them a height difference of 14cm (6").
  • Poe has referred to Ranpo as "Dear" or "Dear Ranpo".
