“It was my best friend. My one and only.”
— Gojo Satoru to Okkotsu Yuuta, Chapter 0.4

SatoSugu is the slash ship between Gojo Satoru and Getō Suguru from the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom.

Canon

Overview

During a period known as their blue spring of youth, Geto and Gojo attended Tokyo Jujutsu High together.[4] Despite their conflicting philosophies, they became best friends and often fought together in battle. A wedge was driven into their relationship after both boys failed to protect Amanai Riko from death. Geto spiraled down as he questioned his path as a jujutsu sorcerer, while Gojo grew immensely stronger and killed Fushiguro Toji, Amanai's murderer. They grew further apart until Geto defected from Tokyo Jujutsu High with the goal of killing all non-sorcerers and eventually became "the worst curse user." Gojo took no action against him for close to a decade. Although Gojo ultimately killed Geto, they had one last heartfelt conversation beforehand. A little less than a year later, Kenjaku successfully used Geto's appearance to trap Gojo within the Prison Realm. He did so by reminding the latter man of his three years of blue spring, which caused the sealing condition to be met.

Once freed from the Prison Realm, Gojo teleported to Kenjaku to self-admittedly put Geto's body to rest. When Sukuna intervened and became the main adversary, Gojo proposed to delay the fight, suggesting December 24. An act that Kenjaku mocked as "romantic" as it is the day Gojo killed Geto and a well-known day for romance in Japan. On the day of the fight, Gojo, beaten by Sukuna, returns to the blue spring of his youth and sees Geto before his death. There, he tells Geto about his troubles and exciting battle against Sukuna. When Geto expressed feeling a little jealous, Gojo quickly reassured Geto that he was irreplaceable to him. Gojo passes away with a smile. Eventually, Geto's body ends up being recovered by Okkotsu Yuta, who had been targeted by Geto in the past, but had already promised himself that he wouldn't let his teacher go through the pain of killing his best friend again.

Gojo’s Past Arc

The Strongest Sorcerers

Gojo Geto

“Let’s take this outside.”

The arc begins with sorcerers Mei Mei and Iori Utahime trapped in a building by a curse. 16 year-old Ieiri Shoko, Geto Suguru and Gojo Satoru arrive on a mission to rescue the two. Although they successfully rescue the two women, the trio forget to put up a curtain. This exposes the destroyal of the building to regular civilians.

Back at Jujutsu High, a conversation about whether or not the curtain was really necessary leads to a discussion about the obligations of sorcerers. Geto believes that it is society's responsibility to protect the weak and keep the strong in check, stating that "Jujutsu exists to protect non-jujutsu users." Gojo, on the other hand, finds looking out for the weak to be a pain and that such righteous thinking is garbage.

Geto loses his temper and proposes they settle things physically. Gojo teasingly puts him down in response. Right as they're about to fight, Principal Yaga walks in and tells the two he has a mission for them.

The Star Plasma Vessel

Okinawa2

Enjoying their stay on Okinawa.

The mission that Gojo and Geto are tasked with is escorting Star Plasma Vessel Amanai Riko to Tokyo Jujutsu High, where she will merge with Tengen. On their way to rescue Amanai and her caretaker Kuroi from a curse-user group, they talk about the mission. Gojo says that things will turn out alright regardless of what happens, saying "We're the strongest," in reference to himself and Geto. The latter boy gently scolds him, saying that he should be more mindful of the way he talks. During the fighting, Geto shows his ability to seamlessly go from using his curses to close quarters combat. Gojo flaunts his Limitless cursed techniques, though he does try and fail to use the reverse cursed technique to perform Red Limitless.

Intermittently, Fushiguro Toji is shown making plans to assassinate Amanai.

While escorting Amanai, the group ends up in Okinawa, where they decide to go to the beach. Kuroi questions if it's really okay to be doing such a thing. Geto responds that it was Gojo's way of being compassionate to Amanai, but that it was indeed time to leave. While she doesn't protest this, the white-haired sorcerer notices the pout on her face and suggests they stay another day. Geto expresses his concern for his friend, as the latter had been using his technique non-stop since the day before, and because the other sorcerer plans to pull a second all-nighter in order to maintain his neutral Limitless technique. Gojo dismisses his concerns, saying it's fine since Geto is beside him. They spend the rest of their day playing around in Okinawa.

When they arrive back at Jujutsu High, Geto thanks Gojo for his hard work.

Star Plasma Vessel Arc

Gojo and Geto separating before Gojo’s face off with Toji Fushiguro.

Upon their arrival, they are attacked by Fushiguro Toji, who stabs the Limitless user with his sword. Geto immediately summons a curse and rushes to Gojo's side, but the white-haired sorcerer reassures him that it didn't hit any vital organs. Gojo asks him to escort Amanai to Tengen safely while he fights Toji. Departing, Geto asks the sorcerer to be careful. Later, he admits to Amanai that he and Gojo made an agreement before meeting her: they would give her a chance to decide whether she really wanted to merge with Tengen or not. If she didn't, they'd call it all off, and protect her as "the strongest" duo.

Toji overpowers Gojo and leaves him for dead, then finds Geto and Amanai, killing the latter. The black-haired sorcerer is shocked to see the assassin as he believed Gojo would not have have let him go if he were alive. His concern is confirmed by Toji — he informs Geto that he has killed Gojo, to which the boy replies with “then die.” The latter tries to avenge Amanai and Satoru. However, Toji proceeds to injure him and leave him in critical condition.

Gojo asks if they should kill the cultists.

Gojo, who was on the brink of death, manages to figure out how to use the reverse cursed technique to heal himself. He goes on to apply the reverse cursed technique to the Red Limitless technique, which is what he uses to kills Toji. After that, Gojo retrieves Amanai's body from the Time Vessel Association Headquarters. Geto arrives shortly after, surprised by his friend's presence and demeanor. As the Children of the Star clap for Amanai’s dead body, Gojo asks Geto whether he should kill them all. His friend states that it would be meaningless, and there always needs to be a reason for a sorcerer to take a life.

Geto’s Decision

SuguruWeight

Gojo worries about his friend.

A year later, in the August of 2007, Ieiri and Geto test the abilities of Gojo’s neutral Limitless technique by throwing small objects at him. At this point, Gojo has grown tremendously as a sorcerer. He is now able to keep the neutral Limitless  active at all times, while simultaneously running a reverse cursed technique to keep his brain fresh. Gojo has become "the strongest" alone, leading him to be sent on more solitary missions. After their first time meeting in a while, the white-haired sorcerer notices that his friend has lost weight, but Geto says that it's just because of summer stress. In truth, he has been caught in an endless circle of swallowing curses one after another. The repulsive taste of the curses, along with his loneliness and distress over Amanai's death have led Geto to question his path as a sorcerer, which he compares to a long marathon with no end in sight.

Suguru and Haibara

Geto choosing sweets for his souvenir.

Before Haibara Yu, Geto’s junior, goes on a trip, he visits Geto and asks him what he should bring back home as a souvenir. The black-haired sorcerer asks for something sweet, since he will likely be sharing it with Gojo. After having a conversation with Haibara and Tsukumo Yuki (the third Special Grade Sorcerer along with Geto and Gojo), it occurs to Geto that he could end the suffering caused by cursed energy if he killed all non-sorcerers. Then, after Haibara's death, Geto becomes convinced that what lies at the end of a sorcerer's path is a mountain of his comrades' corpses.

While on a mission, Geto makes the decision to murder a village of non-sorcerers because they had maltreated two girls for being able to perform sorcery. This is what pushes him over the edge; Geto defects from Tokyo Jujutsu High with the goal of killing all non-sorcerers. He takes the two girls, Mimiko and Nana, with him.

The Rift

Satoru vs Suguru

Gojo learning about Geto massacring the village.

Yaga is the one to tell Gojo that Geto had massacred the village he'd been sent to; the news leaves the white-haired sorcerer stunned. Yaga adds on that Geto had likely been the one to attack his parents as well, but Gojo fiercely denies that his friend would've done anything  like that. Some time later in Shinjuku, Geto appears before Ieiri, who greets him as a criminal. She asks if the charges are false, which he responds is not the case. When she follows up by asking why, Geto says that he wants to create a world where only sorcerers exist, and that he doesn't need everybody to understand him. Ieiri says that just assuming nobody will understand him sounds pretty childish to her, as she takes out her phone to let Gojo know that she spotted Geto.

Satoru vs suguru 3

Gojo demands an explanation from Geto

Upon finding Geto, Gojo demands an explanation for his actions. The former says there is not much to it. Gojo expresses his consternation that Geto is so willing to kill all the non-sorcerers in the world, including his own parents. The curse user is sure that if he wants to make a change, he cannot make exceptions for anyone, and that he has another family to take care of. They argue and Gojo employs the same reasoning Geto himself used after Amanai’s death. The white-haired sorcerer says there is no meaning in killing innocent people, but the curse-user adheres to the opposite point of view and says that there is a meaning. Gojo heatedly proclaims that there is no point in Geto trying, as he wouldn't be able to reach his goal anyway. Geto starts to turn away and remarks that if he were as strong as Gojo, it would not seem so unfeasible. The white-haired sorcerer becomes agitated and raises his arm in order to use Hollow Purple. The curse-user says, "Kill me if you want. There's a meaning to that."

Kill me if you want

Gojo deciding to let Geto go.

Gojo lowers his arm, unable to kill Geto as he walks away.

Later that day, Yaga asks why Gojo didn't chase after Geto. The white-haired sorcerer responds by saying, "Are you… really asking me that?" Yaga then apologizes for asking. Gojo admits that it's not enough for him to just be the strongest — he can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved.

Back in the present, Fushiguro, Itadori, and Kugisaki think that Gojo fell asleep and they wake him up. Everything that happened in Gojo’s Past Arc: his friendship with Geto, meeting Amanai, fighting Toji  — he may have been reminiscing, or it all could have been part of his dream.

Cursed Child Arc

While on a mission to exorcise curses from a shopping center, Okkotsu Yuta and Inumaki Toge unexpectedly encounter a very powerful curse. Upon the successful completion of their mission, Geto is shown talking about how he wanted to see Rika-chan, the curse haunting Okkotsu. The worm-like curse accompanying him spits out Okkotsu's student ID card. Back at the college, Kiyotaka Ichiji apologizes to Gojo as the auxiliary manager who had accompanied Okkotsu and Inumaki. The white-haired sorcerer says it wasn't his fault, as someone else had interfered with the mission: Geto Suguru, who Gojo calls "the worst kind of jujutsu sorcerer."

Gojo Smelled Geto's Residuals

Gojo on Geto's curse residuals

Geto helps a young woman by absorbing the curse that had been terrorizing her. He calls her mother “Satou,” but the older woman corrects him that her name is actually “Saito." Geto dismisses her and insists upon her name being Satou. After the mother-daughter duo leaves, Geto gathers his "family," announcing that it is time to bring about the age of jujutsu sorcerers. The first step is to destroy Tokyo Jujutsu High, the cornerstone of the jujutsu world. Back at the school, Principal Yaga voices his doubts over Geto’s involvement. Gojo reaffirms that he's sure, as there is no way he'd mistake the scent of his former friend's curse power.

Satosugu chapter 0

Reunited again.

Almost immediately after, Geto arrives at Tokyo Jujutsu High. He introduces himself to Okkotsu and tries to persuade the boy to join him in killing all non-jujutsu sorcerers. Gojo arrives and tells the curse-user to quit pushing his inane ideas onto his students. Geto greets him enthusiastically, but Gojo only tells him to get away from the children. Geto proclaims that he came to declare war. He goes on to explain that he will release 1,000 curses in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and 1,000 curses in Kyoto on the 24th of December. Nanako interrupts by exclaiming that the crêpe café she and Mimiko wanted to visit is closing soon, so Geto and his "family" begin to leave. Gojo tries to stop him, but the curse-user manages to get away by threatening the lives of the students. In reality, Geto's actual plan was to have his "family" stall for time while he killed Okkotsu and took control of Rika for himself, at which point he'd use Rika to wipe everyone else out. The curse-user attacks Tokyo Jujutsu High, severely wounding Maki, Panda, and Inumaki in the process. This provokes Okkotsu into going all-out against Geto, and he ultimately leaves the curse-user in critical condition, although the latter manages to beat a hasty retreat.

SatoSugu Vol.0 Ch

Satoru admitting Suguru remains his best friend.

Later, Gojo finds Geto in a narrow alleyway. The curse-user asks after his "family," and speculates that Gojo purposefully sent Panda and Inumaki to get brutally defeated by him, in order to trigger Okkotsu's explosion. The white-haired sorcerer answers that his family all made it out safe. Gojo confirms that he sent Panda and Inumaki for the reason the curse-user suspected, as he trusted that Geto would not kill any of his students. The latter man is surprised to hear such sentiments directed at him. The curse-user also decides to return Okkotsu's student ID at this moment. The white-haired sorcerer asks for Geto's last words; the other man responds by saying that he never hated anyone from Jujutsu High. It was just that it was impossible for him to be happy in a world like the one they lived in. Gojo calls the black-haired man by his first name, "Suguru." He then says something that is not revealed to the reader, with Geto responding by blushing and saying "At least curse at me a little at the very end…" In the same panel as Geto's last response, a "splurting" sound effect is written. It is implied that Gojo killed Geto here. This is confirmed later in the main story. When Gojo returns Okkotsu's student ID to the boy, the white-haired sorcerer mentions that the one who found it was his one and only best friend.

Shibuya Incident Arc

On October 31, 2018, Satoru Gojo arrives in Shibuya, where he is met by Jogo, Hanami, and Choso. The three attack him, and the battle unfolds. Gojo manages to kill Hanami and 1000 of the mutated people, as he notices a Prison Realm cube on the floor. The gate opens, and a person calls to Gojo addressing him by the first name. Shocked Gojo turns and sees Suguru Geto in flesh. The person has Geto’s face and talks to him as if he knows Satoru in person, the entity mentions that it is been a while since they last met. Stunned Gojo starts remembering the day he killed his friend. He wonders if this is really happening and who is standing in front of him, whether that person is “fake” Geto or if it is a transformation technique.

Satosugu chapter 90 meeting

Pseudo-Geto greeting Gojo.

Suddenly Gojo remembers the three years of his youth as images of the past start flooding his mind. As Gojo stands there unable to move, a minute passes, and he is seized. The Imposter in Geto’s body chides Gojo for letting his mind “wander during a fight”. The sorcerer asks him about his real identity, but Geto’s imposter insists on being Suguru, mockingly accusing Satoru of having forgotten him. Gojo is not convinced: even though his Six Eyes tell him that the body and the cursed energy of the person in front of him must belong to no other person but Suguru, he does not believe his perception, it cannot be him, as Gojo’s soul knows it to be untrue.

As Gojo insists on learning the truth, he becomes more agitated and shouts at the person in front of him. The imposter removes the stitch and takes off the top of his head to show the brain inside, as he admits to be an ancient entity who possesses a cursed technique that allows it to switch bodies and use the innate technique contained within the original body. Pseudo-Geto informs Gojo that him obtaining this body is a direct consequence of Gojo’s own actions, as he did not let Shoko Ieiri get rid of Suguru’s body properly. The entity says that he cannot let Gojo get in the way of his plans, that is why he will spend a hundred or a thousand years sealed away.

Conversation with “Geto”.

The imposter bids Gojo goodnight and expresses hope for meeting him in the new world he will create. Gojo replies saying that it might be good night for him, but for Suguru Geto it is time to wake up. He appeals to the remains of his friend’s consciousness left in this vessel and reproaches him for letting somebody else use his body. All of a sudden, Geto’s right arm grabs himself by the throat and tries to strangle himself. The imposter starts laughing, noting it is the first time something like that happened. He adds that he has access to memories after obtaining the body, which would have been impossible, had the soul left the body after its physical death. Mahito and Pseudo-Geto start philosophizing, and Gojo asks them to hurry up as he does not enjoy looking at the two. Glancing down at seized Gojo, Geto’s imposter admits that he actually enjoys the view himself and closes the gate.

After the events in Shibuya, news about Suguru Geto being alive broke, his “survival” is confirmed, and he is sentenced to death again. Despite Gojo getting sealed by “Geto”, higher-ups suspect him of having been Geto’s accomplice all these years after Geto's "death". They believe Gojo and Geto faked the latter’s death, and caused the Shibuya incident. For that, Gojo is permanently exiled from the jujutsu world, and removing the seal from his prison is considered a criminal act.

Culling Game Arc

Yuta is in the Sendai colony and he says to himself, "Sensei... I won't let you kill your best friend a second time" chap 174

In chapter 144, Tengen gives Yuji's group the back gate of the Prison Realm and explains that to unseal it, they need the help of a sorcerer named Angel who can disrupt cursed techniques. As the Culling Game unfolds, they start planning how to get Angel's cooperation so she will open Prison Realm for them. During chapter 174, Yuta is in the Sendai colony and he says to himself, "Sensei... I won't let you kill your best friend a second time. I will kill Kenjaku. And by myself... I will obtain 400 points." Yuta was present in vol O when Gojo referred to Geto as "his best friend, his one and only." Therefore, he is particularly aware of their special bond and friendship.

Later, in chapter 220, Angel is revealed to have been saved by Yuji's old classmate Amai. Gojo and Geto's former classmate Shoko leiri reminisces on their high school days; she recalls Gojo saying, "I won't leave anyone alone." This could plausibly refer to him not wanting anyone to feel isolated again like Geto did when they were teenagers. Immediately after in chapter 221, Yuji's group finally begins the process to unseal Gojo. Angel launches her cursed technique "Jacob's Ladder" and the earth begins to quake. The scene cuts to Kenjaku, who says he "placed the Prison Realm 8000 meters underwater in the deepest area of the Japan trench." However, his precautions backfire as Gojo teleports instantly to the scene and stares down at him. Kenjaku wonders how he got out and tries to joke around, but Gojo says, "You should pick your words more wisely. They're about to be your last."

Gojo meeting with Geto's (Kenny) body, chap. 221

Gojo begins to use his curse technique when Sukuna interrupts their confrontation. Gojo clashes briefly in the air with him, who is now in possesion of Megumi's body. Kenjaku steps in to tell Sukuna "Wait, keep your promise to me before fighting him." Gojo taunts Sukuna for taking orders from Kenjaku and refers to Kenjaku as a "patched-up old bag." (This could either refer to the stitches on his forehead, or it could refer to Geto's old clothing which are actually named after Gojo).

Gojo is visibly frustrated but realizes that he doesn't want to immediately fight Sukuna in particular. He thinks, "Actually, I’ve got things to do before I fight him. I’d like to mourn Suguru’s body… But Sukuna is awfully tight with whoever’s possessing Suguru thanks to a binding vow they made or something. What a pain." Next, the words Yorozu told Sukuna about love, ultimate strength and the solitude it brings appear on the page before Sukuna belatedly agrees to keep his promise to Kenjaku.

Kenny surprised by the date (Anniversary of Geto's death) responding "how romantic" to Satoru. Chap 221

Then, Gojo asks what date it is. After finding out it's November 19th, he suggests, "What say we do this on December 24?" Kenjaku responds with, "Haha, how romantic... Isn't it gross to make plans with each other on Christmas Eve?" Gojo claims, "Well, having two death anniversaries would be confusing." Kenjaku asks him if he doesn't expect to lose. Gojo declares that he will win.

Shinjuku Showdown Arc

In chapter 236, Ryomen Sukuna, after using Mahogara as inspiration, cuts through space, existence, and the world to breach Satoru Gojo's inviolability. He is cut in half. As Gojo fades, the first person he sees is Geto. He complains because he had told his students, specifically Megumi Fushiguro, that when "it's your time to die, you die alone". Because of this, Gojo expresses wanting what he sees to be a part of his imagination. Geto asks him, "Does it matter either way?" Gojo insists that it does and remembers the matter of Megumi's father, Toji, who he killed back in the Hidden Inventory Arc. Gojo then quickly dismisses his own concern, remembering he had already asked Shoko Ieri to handle the matter.

Geto asks Gojo about his experience fighting the king of curses. Gojo admits Sukuna was incredibly strong, and mentions that Sukuna hadn't even gone all out against him. He also confesses how he isn't sure he would have won even if the other didn't have Megumi's Ten Shadow's technique. Gojo tells Geto he feels a bit sorry for Sukuna because he can "empathize with the magnitude of his sheer solitude more than anyone else." Gojo claims to love everyone and not feel particularly lonely at present, but along the way there was a line drawn between him and everyone else. He states, "You can make a flower bloom, you can admire it... But you can't tell that flower I want you to understand me."

Screenshot 20231009 170619 Shonen Jump

Gojo tells Geto he might've been satisfied if he was around. Geto laughs and cries.

Gojo tells Geto that he wanted to convey everything he had learned to Sukuna. For the third time since Sukuna interrupted Gojo's confrontation with Kenjaku, what Yorozu told Sukuna about love and "the loneliness that follows strength" appears. Gojo tells Geto that the battle was fun. Still, he laments Sukuna not being able to give it his all. Geto confesses that he's making him jealous but he assures Gojo "if you're satisfied, then that's alright." Gojo responds, "Satisfied? If you were among those patting my back... Then I might've been satisfied." He imagines Geto standing in his monk robes amongst his students, that had cheered him on before the battle. Geto laughs and sheds a tear. Gojo moves on to say he is glad that he died because of someone stronger and not because of sickness or old age. Their old classmates, Nanami and Haibara are revealed to be sitting behind them. Later, Yaga's presence is made known to the reader, as well as Riko and Kuroi's. They are all shown to be in an airport. In contrast to the beginning of the chapter, by the end, Gojo prays that his encounter with Geto and the others isn't all a part of his imagination.

Gojo is pronounced dead by a third person narrator on December 24. Notably, a year after Geto's death. In chapter 238, Sukuna claims Yorozu might've had more success preaching to Gojo (or Kashimo, who leaped into battle after Gojo was sliced, and questioned him on strength and loneliness) about love.

  • After Toji kills Riko and confronts Geto, the latter is further enraged by news of Gojo's alleged death.
  • After Gojo recovers Amanai's body, he asks Geto if they should kill all of the Children of the Star cultists. He refrains from doing so after the other boy responds that there would be no meaning to it.
  • Later on, when Gojo confronts Geto in Shinjuku, he adopts the philosophy his friend previously held, claiming that there is no meaning in killing all non-sorcerers.
  • Both Gojo and Geto inherited what was left of Toji after his death: Gojo took in his children, Megumi and Tsumiki, while Geto got possession of his other “child”, a worm-like cursed spirit that called Geto “mother”.
  • Geto’s execution order was issued right after the village massacre; Gojo had been postponing the task for 10 years after that.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Arc

  • In a private conversation with Yuta Okkotsu, Gojo says that he has a personal theory about love being the most twisted curse.[12]
  • In the same light novel, when Geto leaves the college after notifying everyone about The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, Gojo watches the "shape of his soul" (夏油の魂の形 in the original text) as he departs.
  • The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 light novel mentions that Gojo's inability to help his only friend led him to become a teacher.[13]
  • In their final scene together, Geto tells Gojo that in this world he cannot really laugh from the bottom of his heart. Gojo's final words to Geto are unknown, but whatever he said made the other man laugh for the last time in his life.
  • In chapter 0.4, Gojo tells Yuta that Geto is the only best friend he’s ever had. Notably, Gojo uses the present tense in the original Japanese panel, despite the fact that they've been separated for close to a decade, on top of the fact that Geto is now dead. By contrast, Geto refers to Gojo as his best friend in the past tense during Chapter 112.[14]

Shibuya Incident Arc

  • While discussing their strategy to immobilize Gojo in order to seal him, curse Jogo says, “Even a thousand measly human lives wouldn’t be enough to distract him!”[15] It turns out to be true; Gojo mercilessly kills a thousand mutated people, but Geto’s appearance stupefies him and leads to his defeat.
  • Geto's appearance was what sparked three years' worth of youthful memories for Gojo. This causes the sealing condition of the Prison Realm to be met, trapping Gojo.
  • Although his Six Eyes indicate that the one before him is Geto Suguru, Gojo claims that his soul knows otherwise.
  • Gojo refused to send Geto’s body to Shoko Ieiri for an autopsy (and subsequent cremation).[16]
  • When Geto’s body reacts to Gojo’s words addressing him, Geto’s imposter notices that it is the first time when it disobeyed him.
  • When Mei Mei meets Pseudo-Geto, she wonders why he is still alive and whether he and Gojo have been conspiring and working together all this time (although, she discards that thought).

Shinjuku Showdown Arc

  • When Gojo is unsealed from the prison realm, the first thing he does is go straight to Kenjaku, who is still in possession of Geto's body. He travels from 8,000 meters underwater, from the deepest area of the Japan Trench, to get to him. He also bypassed cursed spirits that were acting as sensors and multiple layers of seals.[17]
  • After being unsealed, Gojo wanted to mourn and Geto's body a proper burial. He couldn't because of Sukuna's interference, which was the result of the latter's pact with Kenjaku. Gojo proposed fighting on December 24 instead, which Kenjaku essentially calls creepily romantic (December 24th is a couple's holiday in Japan. It is also the anniversary of Geto's death).[18]
  • In chapter 236, which is titled "Going South", Gojo is shown reuniting with all of his dead comrades. Gojo talks about how he had fun fighting Sukuna, but his only disappointment was that Geto wasn't there to give him a slap on the back. During the chapter, Nanami also remarks that to become someone new, one must go north. Conversely, one will return to who they once were by going south.

Behind the Scenes

Gege“How to put it, through making it Satoru (and) Suguru—”
Interviewer“[You wanted] to get it to feel duo like.”
Gege“Also meaning wise... a natural born genius and a genius through effort — well, not exactly — but I kind of wanted to have that difference in nuance.”
— Gege Akutami about choosing Suguru's name.[19]
“The kesa... I may be mistaken but the kesa here is most likely called "gojou-kesa". When I was researching kesa, there were several different ones and this one was apparently called gojou-kesa, so I recall figuring "oh isn't this just right".”
— Gege Akutami on Geto's wardrobe.[20]
Interviewer“What do you hope the audience will pay extra attention to?”
Park“I hope people will watch it with Gojo and Geto's relationship in mind.”
— Sunghoo Park, director of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.[21]
“Last scene between Gojo and Geto is the best scene. Whole team worked hard to create a better atmosphere and tempo. It brings tears to my eyes when I watch it.”
— Sunghoo Park, director of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.[22]
“I think the main topic of [Jujutsu Kaisen 0] is love. Okkotsu and Rika's story is a story that's based on love. Aside from that, although it's not exactly the same love, I think there's still a kind of heart-to-heart understanding between Gojo and Geto. They were once good classmates; now their relationship has turned upside down. Okkotsu and Rika, Gojo and Geto: they're all cases where love could've helped them grow, but instead it became a curse. I think this detail is one of the special points of the movie.”
— Sunghoo Park's thoughts on the core of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.[23]
“The direction given was "Somehow or rather he (Gojo) realised that there is something up with Geto, even though he does not want to directly ask Geto about it to get information, but still wanting to portray the atmosphere of Gojo attempting to be close in his own way." Hence, the (acting) approach was, "Hey, listen to me! Stop thinking of such weird things already, and come over to my side already", this kind of feeling. In the scene in the later half where he tries to persuade Geto, it was more of "Just say something to me", these kind of thoughts as a root, so I changed my acting (to fit that).”
— Nakamura Yuuichi's Interview in Animage 09/23 Issue. [24]
Interviewer“Do you see any difference between Gojo from the anime series and the movie?”
Nakamura“I could really feel a big difference between Gojo from this two hour movie and the anime that had been on air for six months. In the TV anime Gojo didn't talk about himself, so you couldn't see his human nature, but in the movie, the way he interacts with Okkotsu, and emotions he has when facing Geto help to show his own human nature.”
— Nakamura Yuichi (Gojo's Japanese VA).[25]
“I was lectured by director Park and the sound director before recording [the scenes] where Geto talks to Gojo, since the relationship between those two is special.”
— Takahiro Sakurai, Geto's Japanese VA[26]
“Lines they exchange often have a different distance from the others, and there are words that can only be understood between the two of them.”
— Takahiro Sakurai explaining the particularity of Geto and Gojo's relationship.[27]
“The last [scene with] Gojo and Geto... no, it might be better to describe it as Satoru and Suguru's back and forth banter along with their expressions. That scene lingers in my ears.”
— Takahiro Sakurai on scenes from the movie that left an impression on him.[28]

Songs

Shame On Me | Avicii, vocals by Audra Mae & Sterling Fox

Shame on Me is one of the two songs that mangaka Gege Akutami put on the list of Gojo's theme songs.[29] Many fans relate the bittersweet lyrics to Gojo and Geto's relationship.
I'm baptized and born again
You can go to hell with your fucked-up friends
Crazy little bitch in the first degree
Shame on you for loving me
That's what I get for loving you
Oh I can't live without you
And I believed in you and I-
Believed in you and you

Come Back Home | Two Door Cinema Club

Come Back Home is one of the two songs that mangaka Gege Akutami put on the list of Geto's theme songs.[29] Many fans find the song to be reminiscent of Gojo's reaction to Geto's defection, and their confrontation in Shinjuku (aka the "KFC breakup").

I know this isn't it
You'll hit your target someday
So now you're on your own
Won't you come back home
To see you're not that kind
And find the strength, to find the strength
To find another way

Alone Tonight | munnrai (Satoshi Murai), vocals by Bonnie Strange

The song was written specifically for an official Gojo/Geto cetric promotional video displayed at Shinjuku station in Tokyo.[30] The video presents a sequence of manga panels featuring the Strongest Duo, some of the backgrounds are colored red (for Geto) and blue (for Gojo). It is set to an upbeat, but, according to Murai himself, a "mysterious" song. The song has only one line, sampled from song Alone Tonight by Yellow Claw, Ibranovski, €URO TRA$H; the line is being chanted repeatedly:
If I came to your place tonight, would you let me in?

Sakayume (逆夢) | King Gnu

The title of the song translates as "a dream that is contradicted by reality". The song is featured in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as ED, lyrics translation can be found here. While the main theme Ichizu (一途) is about Yuta and Rika's relationship (Yuta's pov), Sakayume is portrayed to be Gojo and Geto's relationship, showing Geto's feelings towards Gojo. Some parts of the lyrics are reference to major dialogues said by Geto. The instrumental version of this song is playing during the scene where Gojo starts talking about Geto to Yuta and admits that he is his one and only best friend.
I'll dive into the sea of memories
And pick up the pieces of my love
And keep them in you forever.

This Is Pure Love | Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui, Alisa Okehazama

The title of this official OST is the line originally said by Yuta in relation to his and Rika's indestructible bond. This track plays during the final scene between Satoru and Suguru, when Gojo finds injured Geto and they have their final conversation, Gojo makes Geto laugh and then takes his life.

Ao No Sumika (青のすみか) | Tatsuya Kitani

The title of the song translates to "Where Our Blue Is". The song is the third opening theme song to the anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen. The lyrics translation can be found here. In an interview with Nikkei Entertainment Magazine (August Issue), Kitani said he wrote the song with Gojo's perspective in mind. He stated that when he was composing the song, he got a request from the anime production staff saying "We want a song that can encompass Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru's youth from start to end." The opening, which you can see here, depicts their lives in high school. The word for “love” being used in the lyrics "It's like a quiet love" is 恋 (koi) which is used strictly for romantic love in Japanese.
Even now, blue resides
Even now, blue remains clear
No matter the prayers or words
Though they draw near, they never reach
It's like a quiet love
In the summer-like colors running down my cheeks
The words that curse you are stuck in the back of my throat

Akari (燈) | Soushi Sakiyama

The title of the first ending of Jujutsu Kaisen's second season translates to "Light". The song's translation can be found here. Much like the opening of this season, the animation depicts Gojo and Geto's high school lives. Primarily, outside of missions. You can see the ending here. The ending shows us Osmanthus flowers and they are used between Gojo and Geto. These flowers symbolize true love and romance, and in Japan they also mean “first love” because they smell so sweet that you cannot forget it, just like first love. Throughout the ending, parallels are drawn between fishes and the relationship that the two have. In an interview Sakiyama specifically stated that the lyrics "Show me your blushing face once more" is Gojo speaking to Geto. Fans relate these lyrics to Geto's reaction after hearing Gojo's unrevealed last words to him in Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0 where Geto can be seen blushing.
Realizing that something seemingly everywhere
Exists only here
Even trivial conversations are fine
Show me your blushing face once more

Give It Back | Cö Shu Nie

The song, used for JJK's 2nd ED, was also used for a JUMP MV that you can see here. The color blue tints its thumbnail and shows Gojo and Geto when they were in high school, following the theme of 青い春 (aoi haru). The MV was released in August 10, during Season 2's break period after Gojo and Geto separated. You can see Miku Nakamura, the vocalist and lyricist of the band's reaction here. Fans took special notice of her use of the black and white heart emoji, "🤍🖤" likely representing Gojo and Geto. Read the translated lyrics here.
Suddenly I woke up to my warm tears
Where can I recapture the thread of that dream?
I've been waiting and wishing
I feel so alone

SPECIALZ | King Gnu

The song is the fourth opening to the anime adaptation. Daiki Tsuneta, a member of the group, shared the lyrics to the song. As noted by Jujutsu Kaisen fans, the letters used in the lyrics are unique and likely represent Gojo and Geto. The fans have related the manner in which the lyrics "I luv you 6a6y" are written to Gojo; the "6" here, representing his six eyes. Likewise, the lyrics "get 1○st iπ 31" can be related to Geto and 31st October when the Shibuya Incident took place. The animation also suggests the lyrics partly relate to them, since the phrase "You are my special" plays several times when they are on screen. Daiki Tsuneta later confirmed in a TV show called 日曜日の初耳学 that the lyrics were indeed intentional[31]; in this specific manner: "get 1○=夏油/Geto, st=悟/Satoru, 1○ 31=10月31日/October 31st, get 1○st iπ 31=get lost in me(我に返る)".
"Get lost in me"
How long will you keep telling yourself
Only words that defend yourself?
"Get lost in me"
I won't allow regrets
About the way I live.
I want a response, I want to feel your body temperature
The flow of low body temperature ignites a blue flame
Don't deceive me romantically, cut through straightforwardly
I can no longer be intoxicated by feverish love songs
"I love you, baby"

Three Years of Youth Overflowing (溢れ出す3年間の青い春) | The Shibuya Incident Original Soundtrack

In this title, "Youth" is worded as Aoi Haru (青い春) or Blue Spring. It's the exact same wording used in the manga when Gojo sees "Geto" in Chapter 90. The idiom suggests "youthful naïveté" but many fans have speculated that it is also a direct reference to the 2001 film Blue Spring (青い春) that tells the tale of students written off as lost causes. Some fans are also reminded of the acclaimed manga Ao Haru Ride (アオハライド) or Blue Spring Ride. Seishun (青春)/Blue Spring denotes a nostalgia and fondness for a time of happiness and hope. In anime or manga, it also often means falling in love or the thrill of intense feelings as a teenager.[32][33] The track first plays in the anime when Gojo sees "Geto" in Shibuya. Its sweet melody is cut short when Gojo negates the information provided by his Six Eyes and Kenjaku reveals himself; where the track turns sinister. The sweet melody plays a second time in the following episode when Geto's body fights back against Kenjaku. It plays a third time in Season 2 when Itadori overhears Mahito call Kenjaku "Geto," and Itadori demands Gojo's release.

Fanon

It is the most written ship for both Gojo and Geto under the fandom’s manga and anime tags on Archive of Our Own, and the most written ship in the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom tag on the whole. SatoSugu has also been on the list of Top 100 Tumblr Ships for consecutive years.[34][35]

There are two version of Satoru and Suguru ship version, SatoSugu(五夏) and SuguSato(夏五). Five Summer is SatoSugu and Summer Five is SuguSato. Unfortunately, There is no day of SatoSugu day because preventing some misunderstanding day and pair position issues with SuguSato day so that some fans artist collaborate to held the event to celebrate SatoSugu day but not exactly date. On, July 25th, the day is "Sugusato day" not "SatoSugu day". When you celebrate the day of the ships (SatoSugu or Sugusato), some of fans artist suggest to not use the hastag which is contains 五(for Satoru) and 夏(Suguru). "夏五の日” and vice versa is prohibited. You can read the explanation here. Therefore, if you celebrate "Sugusato" day (25th July), use hastag #Happy725 or #725の日.

The pairing attracts a lot of people due to the characters’ connection they formed as young adults and the sorrows that followed. Their contrasting aesthetics, personal views, and eventually their opposing positions in the jujutsu world make them a fascinating dynamic to explore. Another thing that sparks interest in the fanbase is that despite Gojo’s omnipotence and absolute invincibility, he has one weakness, which turns out to be the memory of his dead friend. Gojo is similarly Geto’s weakness, as it is ultimately Gojo who figures out Geto’s real intentions behind the Night Parade of a 100 Demons.

The ship’s popularity reached the cosplayers, too. For example, in 2021, married couple from China with almost 7,5 million followers combined on Chinese social platform Weibo cosplayed the characters during CP28, Chinese Comic Con held in Shanghai. As seen in the video the couple posted, they were extremely popular, as the crowd of fans kept following them wherever they went.[36]

Many fans view Gojo and Geto’s falling out as a break up or divorce, there are a lot of fan works (art and fanfiction) made surrounding the theme of ex romantic partners. One of the most popular concepts is Geto and Gojo breaking up in front of KFC, which leads to humorous fan arts like this or this and even playlists (for example). A great amount of works focuses on the time period between Geto’s turn and Volume 0, when Gojo and Geto are considered to be on the opposite sides of the law (fulfilling the trope Love Across Battlelines). Given Satoru and Suguru’s story is undoubtedly tragic, many fan works on AO3 are dedicated to studying such emotional states as heartbreak, loss, grief, e.g.

Another trope explored in fanfiction and fan arts is found family, considering Gojo became Tsumiki and Megumi’s guardian, while Geto took responsibility of raising two girls — Mimiko and Nanako (like here, here, or here). Some AUs include Suguru being mentally stable and becoming a teacher at Jujutsu High along with Satoru (and getting to know Satoru’s students). This inspires many artists to come up with different, often comical, ideas of what their day-to-day life would be like. While some prefer to reminisce on the sorcerers’ youth, others like to explore what their life could be like if Geto came back and took control of his body (like depicted in this comic or in this AO3 work). Often SatoSugu feature works dedicated to other pairings as a background couple, especially in ShokoHime fanfiction and artworks.

In Volume 0, Geto takes Mimiko and Nanako to a famous crêpe shop on Takeshita Street.[37] In the first light novel, months after Geto’s death, Yuji and Megumi wander somewhere in the Akihabara area (9 minutes from Takeshita Street by taxi) and see Gojo; they lose sight of him, and when they find him again, he is eating crêpes bought, judging by the package, in “a popular crêpe shop”.[38] Most popular crêperies in both areas belong to the same brand called Marion Crêpes. Fans believe that Gojo and Geto visited crepe shops when they were students, thus, in fan works they are often depicted getting crepes together, sometimes accompanied by their “children”.

One of the most occuring motifs that artists tend to use in their works is a dragonfly (like here or here). Both Satoru and Suguru have connection to that insect: in one of the interviews, mangaka Gege Akutami admitted that now that Geto is dead with his body still automatically reacting to Satoru, his physical state could be compared to a dead dragonfly with its head ripped off: technically it is dead, but it keeps twitching post-mortem.[39] Some fans hope Gege was joking, and still belive in the possibility of his consciousness (or soul) coming back to him. In a flashback scene from manga, young Satoru can be seen wearing a dragonfly patterned yukata.[40] Another thing about dragonflies that unites both Gojo and Geto is its Buddhist meaning. In Buddhism, it represents the joining of Heaven and Earth as the dragonfly is one with the air and with the water at the same time. Famosly, Gojo quoted Buddha ("Throughout heaven and earth... I alone am the honored one") when he overcame his struggle and was symbolically reborn to join the fight against Toji. Artists mainly use the dragonfly as a symbol of the tragic turn the relationship between Satoru and Suguru took, and the unavoidable nature of fate.

There is another symbol. In the second opening VIVID VICE, Gojo can be seen walking in rain with a bouquet of white and blue flowers in his hand. Judging by the size, shape, and petal edges, these most likely are white calla lilies, gysophilia, and blue roses. White gypsophila from his bouquet, or baby-breath, is used for funeral flower arrangements and farewell ceremonies[41]; white calla lilies symbolize rejuvenation of the soul, love, and grief (often chosen for weddings and funerals).[42] Blue roses do not grow in nature, but can be hybridized or dyed; among other things, they signify unattainableness, a never-to-be-fulfilled wish, and impossible love.[43] Gojo is dressed in all black and is wearing his black shades, meaning he is on his day off, and chose to dress like that for some occasion.[44] All his students seem to be visiting a funeral, but Gojo walks alone, signifying he is going somewhere else, to pay his respects to someone privately. Fans believe this mournful image and its implications are connected to Geto, who died months before the events of the main story.[45] The fandom has taken liking to this interpretation, thus, flower bouquets comprised of blue roses often feature SatoSugu art pieces. Since blue roses are hard to produce, cosplayers (and some artists, too) tend to opt for blue hydrangea, flower that was first discovered and cultivated in Japan.

Upon the release of Jujutsu Kaisen's art for Volume 26, fans have taken notice of another symbol. The cover that depicts Gojo smiling amongst camelias, which have been noted to be Geto's birth flower amongst Japanese fans here, and is information that can be corroborated here, here and here. This has made camelias a popular motif in fanart as the flower is seen as a symbol for Geto himself or Gojo's love for him. Hence, Gojo is often depicted to be smiling at Geto who is off-screen or embracing him. The snow is also an important element to the artworks because it likely represents the date that they both share: December 24. This comic depicts their deaths before showing them together amongst the flowers and snow. A Wagasa or Japanese parasol is also a popular element in fanarts as can be seen here and here. The act of sharing an umbrella is regarded as a romantic symbol of love. It could be a call back to how in the Akari Ending Gojo also rushes to meet Geto with an umbrella.

Following the release of Jujutsu Kaisen second season's Opening 青のすみか (Where Our Blue Is) and Ending 燈 (Akari), a lot of headcanons became popularized. One of them is that Geto's curses, such as Rainbow Dragon, are fond of Gojo. This is based on Gojo sitting atop its head in the midst of battle during one of the scenes in the Opening. [46] Another is that Gojo kissed Geto in the ending scene of Akari, where Gojo is seen throwing his arm around Geto and leaning in close. There's ambiguity to the scene since they are kept at a distance from the viewer with a wide shot. [47] Here is a link to a popular fanart.

After Chapter 238, a lot of fans have also connected the way Sukuna says "I've never needed anyone to satisfy me... Love is worthless."[48] to the way Gojo says, in Chapter 236, "Satisfied? If you were among those patting my back... then I might've been satisfied,"[49]. It has often been interpreted as a confirmation that Gojo loved Geto.[50]

Users point out how the ships Vashwood, SatoSugu and Orufrey have a lot in common shown by this post for example.

Trivia

  • Both Geto and Gojo are two of the four registered Special Grade Jujutsu Sorcerers.
  • According to mangaka Gege Akutami, Satoru’s first impression of Suguru was “bangs”.[51]
  • After Geto left Jujutsu High and went rogue, he started wearing a ceremonial outer robe called “gojō-gesa” (五条袈裟), Gege admitted it was intentional as they thought it would be a good way “to connect them”.[52]
  • Gojo and Geto have techniques that oppose each other in its essence: Gojo’s technique allows him to be untouchable to his enemies, while Geto is forced to consume curses in order to defeat them.
  • They both invoke Buddhist imagery.
    • Gojo’s name means “to be spiritually awakened”, in its stem form “enlightenment”. When he fights Toji, he reaches the level of higher perception, and upon touching the source of the cursed energy, he feels enlightened. After almost dying and symbolically coming back to the living world, Gojo famously declares, “Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one.” It is what Buddha first said when he emerged from his mother’s womb.
    • Geto’s layered traditional clothing intentionally resembles a Buddhist monk's robe. His name might refer to the Buddhist term Gedō (外道) — heterodox path.[53] On the cover of chapter 70, Geto is depicted as bodhisattva. Geto wears visible ear piercings (those could be big round earrings or plug earrings); Buddha’s ears are pierced and permanently elongated with heavy earrings. In chapter 0.3 Geto helps a cursed young woman, and her mother says, “See, he’s like Buddha himself”.
  • Gojo and Geto’s VAs, Yuichi Nakamura and Takahiro Sakurai respectively, collaborated 74 times on different anime films, series, and video games. They are both among top 5 actors the other worked with the most during their careers. Both Nakamura and Sakurai voiced the same character from Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Bruno Bucciarati (in anime and video game). They voiced main characters in Mr. Osomatsu; in Genocidal Organ Nakamura voiced the protagonist, Sakurai voiced the antagonist. They dubbed rivaling partners Ferid and Guren in Seraph of the End. In Fruits Basket they voiced best friends Shigure and Ayame, who share a very playful and flirtatious relationship.[54]
  • Gojo and Geto feature sequential covers of chapter 89 and chapter 90: both Satoru and Suguru are depicted with nimbs over their heads, but Gojo’s takes shape of the mathematical symbol of infinity (∞). The imagery and the color scheme implies their resemblance to an angel (Gojo in shimmering white and blue) and a devil (blood stains, aggressive red and acid green in Geto's case).
  • The Prison Realm containing Gojo has the front side and the back side. The front side’s appearance has several eyes, referencing Gojo (and his technique), and the back of the Prison Realm has a wide stiched scar (like the one Geto’s body is sporting at the moment).
  • When they were young, Geto told Gojo to be more respectful to his elders and use the pronoun watashi or boku instead of informal ore[55]. In Volume 0 Gojo adresses his superiors using watashi.[56]
  • During their high school years, Geto was Gojo’s moral compass.[57]
    • Suguru’s steep turn, according to Gege, made Satoru become more levelheaded, instead of turning desruptive and chaotic.
  • As a student, Geto was prohibited from using his cursed technique on Jujutsu High’s territory, as it sets off an alarm for unregistered cursed energy; however, sometimes he would get into arguments with Gojo and use it without permission.[58]
  • In the first Japanese issue of chapter 3, volume 0, when Gojo tells Yaga about Geto’s involvement, he uses an expression that translates to “lingering scent” (残り香), it was changed to “residuals” (残穢) in later editions (“There’s no way that I would mistake his residuals.”).[59]
  • Gojo's final words to Geto are not revealed in manga. However, Takahiro Sakurai mentioned that they had been written for the original script for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Yuichi Nakamura read them when they were recording the scene so that Sakurai could react to them properly — with great astonishment and delight.[60]
  • When Gojo faces Geto for the first time after Suguru became a curse user, they meet in an alleyway called Omoide Yokochō, which translates to “memory lane” in English.[61] One of the manga panels depicts them standing in front of a counter-serve stall, looking very much like a KFC stall that can be found there in reality. This confrontation is often referred to as “KFC Breakup” in fandom circles.
