“I shall be waiting for you.”
— Uraume to Sukuna

SukUme is the non-binary ship between Ryomen Sukuna and Uraume from the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom.

Canon[]

Though not much is known about their relationship, Uraume has been Sukuna's servant for a thousand years, all the way back from the Heian Era before Sukuna split his soul into 20 cursed objetcs. The creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, Akutami Gege, said that Sukuna never had wife or children, he only had Uraume as a servant. Akutami also added that Uraume is Sukuna's close aide whom he trusts[2][1]. It is assumed that Uraume knows Sukuna better than anyone since they have served Sukuna for a long time.

While there is not much known about Uraume as well, they are very loyal and devoted to Sukuna. As for Sukuna, his relationship with Uraume hasn't been fully disclosed, but he seems to respect them nonetheless. Sukuna is also shown to be more nice and friendly towards Uraume compared to the entire cast.

Shibuya Incident Arc[]

The two reunited when Jogo was defeated. Uraume had come to find Sukuna and escort him, and he seemed very surprised upon seeing them, as he didn't recognize them initially. Once Sukuna realized who they were, Uraume smiled and told him that it was nice seeing him again. And when the time came that the two had to part ways, Sukuna told Uraume that he'd see them later. Uraume says "I shall be waiting for you" after he leaves.

Culling Game Arc[]

This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.

In Chapter 215, Uraume interrupts the battle between Sukuna, Maki and Yuji, and bows to Sukuna, apologizing for intervening. They ask Sukuna to forgive him, to which Sukuna immediately responded with: "You're forgiven." When he asks Uraume to get the "Bath" ready, Uraume replied that it was already ready, and they needed to depart. Sukuna smiles softly at Uraume, and says: "As meticulous as always...", which makes Uraume very happy. At the end of the chapter, getting on Nue, the two laugh and mock Yuji as they fly off.

Moments[]

  • As Uraume fights Choso and Yuji Itadori, Sukuna's vessel, Yuji breaks Choso out of the ice that Uraume had contained him in, and an angry Uraume yells at him: "Who's body do you think that is?!" referencing Sukuna.
  • In the second opening of Jujutsu Kaisen before Sukuna shows up on screen, Uraume's icefall is seen underwater.
  • When Jogo, Mimiko and Nanako awaken Sukuna using his fingers, Sukuna makes them bow down to him. Nanako and Mimiko both bow down right onto the floor, while Jogo only bows with one knee. The action makes Sukuna almost slice his head off since Jogo is nowhere near the same level as him. But when Uraume bows down on one knee, and even stands next to him despite being a servant, Sukuna doesn't say or do anything.
  • Uraume and Sukuna laugh and mock Yuji together when they depart in Chapter 215.

Fanon[]

SukUme is more popular with fans who've read the manga. The reason why fans love the ship so much is because of Uraume's eternal loyalty and devotion to Sukuna. Sukuna willingly let Uraume stay by his side as a servant. Fans of the the ship also like to believe that Sukuna has "soft spot" for Uraume, since they feel that it is impossible for Sukuna to keep someone by his side for so long. SukUme fans find their relationship endearing despite knowing so little. SukUme fans like to joke about how Uraume makes the perfect partner for Sukuna since they can cook delicious meals.

In fan content, alternate universes for Sukuna and Uraume often involve the two living together. A song that mirrors SukUme's relationship well is "home with you" by FKA twigs. A theory in the SukUme fandom is that there is some kind of connection between Sugawara no Michizane, Sukuna and Uraume. Sukuna has a similar ox connection with Sugawara and his Domain Expansion looks a lot like Sugawara's Daizafu shrine. Sugawara also deeply loved plum blossoms, to the point that he wrote many poems about them. The kanji in Uraume's name, "Ume" «梅» means "plum" "plum tree" or "plum blossom." SukUme fans think this could be a hint of romantic feelings from Sukuna since him and Sugawara have many similarities. Not to mention, the tree that Sugawara Michizane loved "tobiume" flew from it's spot to see it's master. Which a lot of people connect to Uraume who went to escort Sukuna. [3][4]

SukUme is also shipped by those who ship EreMika from the Attack On Titan fandom. Due to both of the couples having "cinematic parallels" such as Sukuna and Eren both having someone important who devoted their lives to them. Both Mikasa and Sukuna also respectively said goodbye to Eren and Uraume with a "See You Later". SukUme is also jokingly compared to Zutara from the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom due to Uraume and Sukuna having Fire and Ice abilities like Zuko and Katara. Fans also think SukUme parallels YutaRika, as both ships include their own respective Queen and King of curses with powerful sorcerers. Despite his title as the King of Curses, Sukuna is not and has never been a cursed spirit.

SukUme is Uraume's most popular ship and Sukuna's sixth most popular ship. A popular SukUme trope is to draw Sukuna and Uraume as Yuji's parents or caretakers, such as depicted here in the sketch made by @Maharu1120 on Twitter.

Trivia[]

  • Akutami Gege stated that Uraume had been associated unwaveringly with Sukuna for a thousand years[2].
  • Akutami Gege referred to Uraume as Sukuna's close aide in a character poll for Jujutsu Kaisen. In another translation, Uraume is called "Sukuna's trusted aide."[5][3]
  • Akutami Gege said that Sukuna did not have a wife nor did he have children a thousand years ago, he only had Uraume by his side as a servant[4].
  • It was said in the Jujutsu Kaisen Fanbook that Sukuna's only interest is food[5]. Sukuna ate humans and the only person who could excellently cook them was Uraume. For that reason, Sukuna tolerated Uraume.[6]
  • Sukuna and Uraume are both powerful sorcerers who contrast each other. Uraume has ice abilities while Sukuna has fire abilities.
  • Sukuna and Uraume wear very similar kimono. Both have the same white and blue colors in the Anime and the same black and white colors in Manga, they also wear the same colored haori. Since Sukuna's kimono is loose akin to a ladies kimono, many fans thought that Uraume could've given him those clothes since they have an identical one themselves.
  • In the original Japanese translation of chapter 116, when Sukuna and Uraume are about to part ways Sukuna says to Uraume: “See you later, Uraume” "Mata (na), Uraume." Mata (na) would be casual, the way you'd say bye-bye to your friend at the end of an activity when you go your separate ways. It would be soft, cute, and friendly. It doesn't explicitly means "see you later", it just has that kind of a feeling because you expect to see your friend again at some point. Mata (na) is more manly sounding than Mata ne which would be neutral. It implies a wish to meet again, and it's just a nice thing to say, like "I'll be seeing you". Which led many fans to notice how Sukuna talks to Uraume compared to how he talks to everyone else.[7]
  • In chapter 116 when Uraume says "I shall be waiting for you" in the original Japanese translation it's "I am waiting for you." Uraume also said "お待ち" (omachi) "Omachi" is a VERY formal version of 待って ("matte" = wait) people only say this to someone who they deeply respect.[8]
  • In the official Spanish translation of chapter 116 and 117, instead of Uraume saying "I have come to escort you" they say "Master Sukuna, I have come to welcome you." as well as the line "It's nice to see you again" is changed to "It's good to see you again after such a long time."
