Fontaine Twins is the family ship between Lyney and Lynette from the Genshin Impact fandom.

Canon[]

Lyney and Lynette are twin siblings who share a deep connection through their traumatic childhood experiences. They have formed an immensely strong bond due to their time spent together, developing the abilities to work together efficiently, read each other's thoughts without either of them speaking, and impersonate each other through both manner of speech and physical appearances. Both twins greatly trust each other and fear the same separation in their past happening again. Lyney currently performs in Fontaine as a renowned magician, while Lynette serves as his reserved and unsociable assistant. They are both members of the House of the Hearth, taken in upon being rescued by Arlecchino.

Lyney and Lynette's parents passed away sometime in their life, leaving the two as orphans on the streets. Striving to survive in these conditions, Lyney started observing an older street performer to figure out how his magic tricks worked. He then went off to a crowded area on the streets with Lynette, and began to perform the tricks he learned. The twins gained an unexpected amount of popularity from their performances, resulting in their life slightly improving.

One day, Lyney was approached by an aristocrat, claiming he wanted to take Lyney and Lynette in as foster children. However, the two eventually realized the aristocrat was solely interested in Lyney's talent for performing tricks, and would exploit him for attention. A while after being taken in, Lyney returned home after a certain performance only to discover Lynette was not with him. He asked the aristocrat where she had gone, the latter responding "She caught the eye of a most eminent person at the banquet, so I sent her over as a gift. I mean, you'll be able to perform your magic regardless of who your assistant is, yes?". Hearing this, Lyney became determined to find his sister and assure her safety, locating the mansion of the man she was sent to.

By the time he made it inside, he discovered Arlecchino had already rescued Lynette and several other girls kept in a basement. Presumably seeing potential in him and his sister, Arlecchino offered Lyney a chance to join the House of the Hearth. Though at first reluctant, Lyney eventually agreed, and the two became orphans under Arlecchino's care who they from then on adressed as "Father". Gaining a new identity as Fatui, Lyney and Lynette began to carry out missions assigned to them and developed into important members of the House of the Hearth.

After watching a magician named Cesar perform, Lyney and Lynette approached him with the intention of learning more about magic. Seeing their young age, Cesar first told them learning how to do magic was difficult, but the two appeared very determined, hence the former agreeing.

Act I - Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur[]

The Traveler and Paimon first meet Lynette upon arriving in Fontaine. The two spot her standing on the edge a lake, and worriedly presumes she is about to jump in. When Lynette is approached by the two, she stoically responds she is fine. As Paimon comments she seemed to be troubled by something, the former explains she was reminiscing about a place on top of a hill where she would play with her brother during childhood. She recalls the beauty of the hill and how her brother would happily play, appearing upset it is now submerged by water.

In the middle of their conversation, Lyney walks up to the three, wondering if Traveler and Paimon are Lynette's recently gained friends. He introduces Lynette to them as his sister, assuring them there is no need for concern regarding her behaviour. Paimon greets Lyney, explaining they were just talking with Lynette, though struggled to understand her words. Lyney smiles and comments on the rarity of Lynette willingly speaking to others, as she usually only talks to him. Hearing this, Paimon states the two are just like her and the Traveler, with one often talking much more than the other. Lynette and the Traveler both agree their respective companions are quite talkative. Lyney then explains the situation about the prophecy circulating around Fontaine, seeing Paimon's curiousity regarding it. Afterward, both twins lead the Traveler and Paimon to the Opera Epiclese in order to meet the Hydro Archon, Furina.

Just then, Furina appears to personally welcome the Traveler. She accuses them of breaking a Fontainian law by releasing a flying object within the first three days of the month, with the "flying object" referring to Paimon. Lyney comes to their defense and states Paimon is a balloon due to a string he attached to her earlier. At the sight of this act, Furina amusingly laughs and states she will not press charges against someone innocent, before expressing her anticipation for Lyney and Lynette's upcoming performance in the Opera Epiclese.

After this brief encounter, Lyney explains his identity as a magician with Lynette functioning as his assistant. He invites the Traveler and Paimon to attend his performance mentioned by Furina. Additionally, he tasks them with distrubting magic pockets to nearby citizens while also providing them with further insight concerning Fontaine's prophecy. He then makes another request for the Traveler to find Romaritime Flowers. Upon their completion at this, Lyney praises them for their speed at gathering, and advises Lynette may feel like providing her help next time as well. The latter asserts she has to save her energy for their performance, Lyney accepting her choice with a sigh. As they are about to leave for the Court of Fontaine, Lyney notices a thief he works with his sister and the Travleler to catch. However, Lyney twists his ankle running after the thief which gives her time to flee. Lynette lectures her brother to be more cautious of getting injured in these ways as it may impact their performances.

The twins take an aquabus to the Court of Fontaine with the Traveler and Paimon, encountering Charlotte after she abruptly jumps on. She excitedly greets Lyney and Lynette, already aware of who they are due to their fame. The two both politely exchange her greeting, and everyone on the aquabus begins to converse. Charlotte mentions the "serial disappearances of young women" case, which she has been observing. Lyney adds on to her thoughts while also stating he would do anything to rescue Lynette if it were her to be taken. Soon, the aquabus arrives at the awaited city. Lyney suggests heading to their home first, where the Traveler and Paimon meet their younger brother Freminet.

The twins are seen again when the time for their performance comes at last. Lynette first meets the Traveler and Paimon by the Fountain of Lucine, suggesting they go into the Opera Epiclese to meet Lyney for a chat. Once inside, Lyney gives the two their tickets and they head off to find their seats. As the performance officially begins, Lyney starts off with a grand introduction while Lynette simply gives an unenergetic hello. The former assures the audience this is just a sign of her nervousness, and continues the show with both twins taking off their elemental Visions. After displaying a few simple tricks with his hat, Lyney announces he will make Lynette completely disappear using a water tank, raising anticipation and curiosity in the crowd. With a snap, Lynette vanishes from the tank leaving only her clothes behind. She then seamlessly appears back on stage behind Lyney, deeming the trick successful. The next trick Lyney performs is a position swap, involving two magic boxes, himself and a random audience member. The crowd chants a countdown for the swap to happen, but Lyney appears to step out of the box too early.

Right when the trick is about to be executed, the water tank from the previous magic trick crashes down onto the box of the audience member. The show is called to a stop and the area is investigated. Furina accuses Lyney of being responsible for this incident and thus presses charges against him. She immediately assumes the Traveler will act as his attorney, which they confirm. After meeting up and talking, the twins decide they need to reveal the function of their magic trick in order to prove Lyney's innocence. The Traveler and Paimon go off to look for clues on what happened, returning with Navia who has agreed to assist the twins with their case. The twins take everyone to a passage below the stage where their trick is done. They thoroughly explain how it works, even revealing Lynette was the one walking out of the magic box during the show, disguised in Lyney’s clothing. A Garde shows up and instructs the twins they are not allowed to be at the scene of the crime, leaving the others to investigate on their own.

The next day, The Traveler and Paimon face Furina in court on behalf of the twins. Furina manages to build up reasonable points against them, causing the Ortatrice to tilt in her favor. She even publicly exposes Lyney and Lynette as members of the Fatui under the House of the Hearth. After learning this, The Traveler and Paimon become less trustful of the two due to their past experiences with the Fatui, but still decide to side with them. The trial is adjourned so the four can sort things out. The twins try to explain themselves while asking for forgiveness and trust, and Lyney discloses he was really in the basement of the Opera Epiclese during the performance, trying to figure out how the Ortatrice operates. In the end, The Traveler still chooses to defend Lyney in court. After thorough thinking, explaining and refuting, the former provides proof Lyney is not responsible for the incident, and Navia even finds the presumably missing audience member “Liliane” to explain the rest of the truth. This officially confirms the twins to be innocent. After the trial, they catch up with The Traveler and Paimon to thank them for their defense. Lyney assures they have no ill intentions, explaining the goals of the House of the Hearth and their hard past as orphans. He ends by stating he is willing help the Traveler whenever they need it, and the latter leaves with Paimon after a goodbye.

Fanon[]

Fontaine Twins is a very well received and appreciated familial ship within the fandom. Their intimacy and deep understanding of each other has greatly helped uplift the popularity of the two. Revealed all the way back in 2020 before Genshin Impact itself was released, Lyney and Lynette's relationship and identities attracted curiosity early on. Theories regarding the two began circulating, many about their connection to each other as they appeared to be close in some way. They were widely presumed to be related due to having the same hair and eye colors, as well as having similar color palettes overall. The release of the Fontaine Archon Quest proved this theory to be true, delighting fans who had already begun to grow fond of Lyney and Lynette as a familial pairing.

In the fandom, their backstory is perceived as quite tragic yet touching at the same time. Although they lost their parents early in life and were brought up by an exploitative aristocrat, Lyney and Lynette went through all of this together, strengthening their already close relationship. They are often depicted providing each other with words of encouragement and much needed support through their hardships. Their character stories feature one another many times, and reveal otherwise hidden details about the two. Though they are rather reserved about their genuine emotions, particularly Lyney being recognized as a great magician, they are able to comprehend and read each other well, allowing them to feel at ease when sharing their feelings. There is a sense of complete trust, ease, and reliance between the two, frequently touched upon in fan works.

Fontaine Twins is known to be a more prominent ship within the familial ship Fontaine Trio, consisting of Lyney, Lynette and Freminet. This majorly derives from the fact that Lyney and Lynette are biological twins while Freminet is merely their adoptive brother, hence the two naturally being closer with one another. As they began increasingly appearing in official content without Freminet, more fans have taken notice of how the two stand out as a duo in this trio. Moreover, Freminet is often jokingly referred to as the "left out" or "forgotten" sibling.

The pairing currently has 350+ works under the gen tag on AO3.
