Freelin is the femslash ship between Freya Mikaelson and Keelin Malraux from the The Originals fandom.
Canon[]
The pair initially met in the fourth season following Keelin's introduction. When Keelin was trapped as Freya's prisoner, Freya sought out advantages in her fight against Marcel Gerard and the Mikaelsons harvested werewolf venom from Keelin in order to have a safeguard against Marcel's bite. While in captivity, Keelin and Freya grew closer to each other. The two of them bonded when Freya treated Keelin's injuries and learned about the measures Keelin had taken to suppress her werewolf powers in the past. During her captivity, Keelin made multiple appeals to Freya's sense of Humanity, understanding through she was that Freya was acting to protect her family. And through knowing Keelin, Freya did begin to question her methods. Hayley initially freed Keelin, but in her escape she was once again caught by Freya and the pair came to an agreement. They kissed after Keelin realized her feelings for Freya were more profound than she previously believed when Freya is nearly killed. Even though Freya initially tried to keep things separate between them after they parted ways, her feelings quickly changed her mind and she kissed Keelin back. Despite concerns about Keelin being a werewolf and Freya's family being vampires, the pair began a relationship. They also started referring to themselves as "Juliet and Juliet" in reference to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette. During The Feast of All Sinners, Freya had been prepared to transition into a vampire. Although she was afraid to hurt her girlfriend, Keelin had loved her enough to be willing to kill her painlessly in order for Freya to turn. However, to both their relief, this was unnecessary.
After a long relationship, the pair break up for a short time as Keelin's wishes to travel to help other people across the United States with medical treatment conflicted with Freya's duties to her family, and although the pair were not together they reunited when Keelin returned to New Orleans in order to support Freya through the loss of her friend, and the mother of her niece, Hayley. Spending time together, the pair realized the love was still there and Freya proposes to Keelin. Keelin accepts, and after talking through Freya's fears of what would happen to any children they might have and Keelin's desire to be a mother one day, the pair get married shortly after among friends and family, with Freya's brother Kol officiating their marriage.
It is revealed in Legacies season two, episode six entitled That's Nothing I Had to Remember that they have a son named Nik together via a paternal donor likely to be Vincent Griffith; who had agreed to be the biological father of any future children they had when asked.
Fanon[]
The ship name Freelin is a portmanteau of their first names Freya and Keelin. Freelin quickly became a fan favorite during The Originals release, and fans were excited to see the pair grow closer and eventually begin a relationship together. They currently have 278 works on AO3 and are the second most popular sapphic ship in The Originals tag. Many fans liked the inclusion of a sapphic romance in the TVDU, particularly when their story-line resulted in a happy ending wherein both parties survived well into the timeline of Legacies. Until that point in time, inclusion of sapphic women had been limited to Heretics Nora Hildegard and Mary Louise, both of whom were killed during the seventh season of The Vampire Diaries. Although among the first same sex couples in the TVDU and the first to have been awarded a happy ending, they are considered a rarepair when compared to those of it's spin-off Legacies, such as Hosie.
