Frothel is the het ship between Claude Frollo and Mother Gothel from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tangled fandoms.
Canon[]
As they come from different canons, Frollo and Gothel have never met each other. They both appeared in the Once Upon a Studio anniversary short from Disney, but did not share any interactions together.
The main driving force behind this ship is the similarities between the two characters. They are both known for stealing a baby, and raising it as their own. This child is kept locked away inside a tower (Quasimodo due to his ugly appearance, and Rapunzel due to her magical hair). Frollo and Gothel are both incredibly selfish individuals, and portrayed as the villains of their respective stories. Despite that, they attempt to gaslight their children into believing that they are the only ones who could ever possibly love them, which helps to keep their children isolated from the rest of the world.
Both Frollo and Gothel are shocked when they discover that their child has disobeyed them and left their tower. They both try and trick their child into believing that what they experienced in the outside world wasn't real. They especially like to emphasize that they could not have possibly experienced "real love".
By the end of their films, Frollo and Gothel are forced to confront their adopted children. They both eventually fall to their deaths from the top of the high building that their children have been forced to live their entire lives within.
There are some small difference between the characters of Frollo and Gothel as well. Frollo adopts Quasimodo after accidentally killing his mother, and believing it to be the only way to wash himself of his sin. He despises Quasimodo, and tries to kill him on at least two occasions. Gothel, on the other hand, abducts Rapunzel from her parents so that she may use her hair to keep herself young. Her goal is to keep Rapunzel alive at all costs, and she seems to hold at least some sort of positive feelings for the girl. While Quasimodo knows that Frollo adopted him, Rapunzel fully believes that Gothel is her biological mother.
Fanon[]
Frothel is not a very popular ship, but the two characters do often draw comparisons in fan discussions about Disney films. Many fans see the similarities between the two, almost wondering if Mother Gothel was directly inspired by the Disney interpretation of Claude Frollo. Fans of this ship may also think of Frollo being the father to Gothel's biological daughter, Cassandra. This ship can sometimes be seen as a parallel to Quasipunzel.
There are currently over 5 works for this pairing on AO3. It is Mother Gothel's sixth most popular ship.
