FuyuOno is the femslash between Ichie Ono and Shiori Fuyumura in the Sanda fandom.
Canon[]
History[]
The two of them became roommates and best friends during their time at school with one another. While the exact details are not clear, it is clear that Ono became attracted to Fuyumura. However, she was insecure because of her belief that the feeling may be one-sided.
Fuyumura and Ono were in bed together looking through images in a book. In particular, both of them were expressing curiosity in adult naked bodies of a man in particular. While looking at one another, the two lean in towards one another as though they were about to kiss. However, Fuyumura pulls away at the last minute before their lips touch.
While bunking together, Ono used to watch Fuyumura sleep in wonder because the children of Japan are fed specific diets so that they do not need to sleep to preserve their youth. In her internal monologue, Ono states that she did not want Fuyumura to sleep because she got lonely without her being awake alongside her. While they're lying next to each other, Ono confessed her love to Fuyumura. It is suggested that what happens next with Fuyumura waking up and the two embracing one another and implicitly having sex, was all a dream of Ono's.
When Ono wakes up, she saw that her body had matured. Overcome with shame and fear that she had undergone puberty (which is against school rules), and that she had a wet dream about her best friend, Ono disappeared of her own volition.
Main Story[]
The reason Fuyumura initially shows interested in Sanda and wants him to become Santa Clause is because she wants him to help her rescue her best friend, Ono. Fuyumura expresses concern and her usual stoicism is only broken when someone mentions Ono. Over time, it becomes clear that the girls had a rather close relationship to one another.
There is a brief reappearance of Ono, though she disappears swiftly before the altercation between Fuyumura, the others, with the principal. Fuyumura is shocked but does not run after Ono. Instead, she stays in the classroom with Amaya as she sorts through her feelings from seeing Ono again. Even so, Fuyumura continues desperately searching for Ono as she is heavily dependent on Ono.
Episode 5[]
Ono makes a reappearance at the laundry mat that Fuyumura is at. Fuyumura is shocked by her reappearance and comments in surprise by how different Ono looks. Ono leaps onto Fuyumura and kisses her. Ono expresses her desire for herself and Fuyumura to never grow up so that the two can be together in their current states. Ono pulls out a knife as though expressing a desire to commit a murder-suicide of the two of them. However, Fuyumura tells her not to be rash which causes Ono to think that she has grown up while she was gone. Fuyumura tells Ono that there is nothing wrong with growing up. However, Ono is startled by Principal Oshibu appearing before and watching them.
Episode 8[]
In episode 8, Ono and Fuyumura are sitting the infirmary bed together. Fuyumura speculates on how much the other changed upon undergoing puberty, considering she did so before everyone else. She seems to lament how much Ono changed, whereas she remained the same. Ono tells Fuyumura that she plans on leaving soon because she became an adult and can no longer stay. Ono says that she wants to make one final memory at the Peak of Youth ceremony. Ono tells Sanda that she is glad Fuyumura will be left in good hands when she is gone. Ono prepares alongside Fuyumura, Sanda, and Amaya for the ceremony.
Episode 9[]
Fuyumura visits Ono in the infirmary once more and paints her nails. She admits that she is bad at stuff, with Ono saying she is doing fine and reminiscing. Ono thanks her and the two plan on when to meet up for their date at the ceremony. Fuyumura feels awkward when Ono stares at her during silent pauses. Ono says that she can never make fun of her, partially because she is an adult but also because she likes her. Fuyumura's eyes widen, and she blinks, but says that she likes her too and that she nearly went crazy looking for her.
Ono says that she thinks they mean completely different things when they use the word 'like'. Ono strips and asks how Fuyumura feels upon seeing her naked. Ono says that her heart would pound if she saw Fuyumura without her clothes on. She says that wouldn't be the case for Fuyumura, though. Fuyumura says that likely wouldn't be the case, because of her insecurities about her body. Ono tells Fuyumura to take off her clothes to demonstrate. Fuyumura nervously removes her own clothing and covers herself, sitting across from Ono in silence. Ono express that she feels like a creep. Fuyumura feels insecure about Ono growing up and developing curves, whereas she is just getting taller.
Ono asks Fuyumura if she likes Sanda or not. Ono says that she was happy that Fuyumura made more friends and wouldn't blame her if she had started to like Sanda. This startles and angers Fuyumura, who slaps Ono's hand away and is frustrated with all the discussions about love and hate. Fuyumura questions whether that's all that matters when someone becomes an adult. Fuyumura loudly proclaims that she likes all her friends and storms out of the room, not even bothering to put her clothes back on as she runs away.
Fuyumura runs to Sanda, pleading with him to bring 'Ono' back. She questions whether an adult can become a kid again after having undergone puberty. Fuyumura is uncomfortable with her best friend growing up without her. Fuyumura cries in Sanda's arms, upset over her conversation with Ono earlier.

Fanon[]
FuyuOno is a popular ship in the SANDA fandom, at least among anime watchers, because of the two clearly having some sort of feelings for one another. This becomes more blatant in flashbacks and the scenes where Ono kisses Fuyumura. The popularity has skyrocketed since the anime adaptation from SCIENCE SARU has released, with people being particularly interested in their relationship. Even so, the newness of the anime and obscureness of the manga mean the ship is relatively small as of the anime's release. They have at least 2 fics on A03 so far.
The ambiguity of Fuyumura's sexuality makes the ship somewhat contentious as to whether the feelings between herself and Ono are mutual. As Ono herself questions whether the love between them is the same or not. There is a lot of speculation whether Fuyumura is lesbian, bisexual, and/or on the aromantic or asexual spectrum. There are also people who ship Fuyumura with Sanda, the protagonist, because of his brief crush on her and characters like Niko questioning whether Fuyumura loves him or even prefers him over Ono.
Due to SANDA sharing a mangaka with Beastars, there is an overlap in the fanbases who ship FuyuOno and those who ship Lougosi and JunoHaru.
