Aladdin (1992)[]

Aladdin ventured into the Cave of Wonders after Jafar tries to trick him into retrieving the lamp for him under the pretense that he could make Aladdin's marriage to Jasmine a reality. After braving the danger of the Cave of Wonders, Aladdin retrieves the lamp and almost escapes the cave, but when Jafar demands the lamp from him, he tosses Aladdin back into the cave, trapping him. Aladdin is devastated, but then his monkey Abu reveals that he managed to snatch the lamp out of Jafar's grasp and Aladdin inspects the lamp, seeing an inscription, but finding it hard to read, he absent-mindedly rubs the lamp. This frees the Genie, who introduces himself to the boy and takes an immediate shine to him, calling him "Al". He calls himself his friend within a minute of meeting him and performs a song number just for him, telling him that he will grant three wishes to him. Not wanting to waste one of his wishes to escape the cave, Aladdin casts Genie's abilities in doubt, tricking him into escaping the cave without making a wish.

When Aladdin and his entourage land in an oasis, the Genie tells Aladdin that he has two wishes left, only to be dumbstruck when Aladdin tells him that he never made a wish. The Genie is a good sport about it, merely telling Aladdin to never trick him again. The Genie then tells him that though he has "phenomenal cosmic power" at his disposal, he's actually miserable since him being trapped in the lamp not only robs him off his freedom, but also makes him claustrophobic. Empathizing with the Genie, Aladdin promises him to use his last wish to free him. When the Genie asks about Aladdin's first wish, Aladdin tells him about Princess Jasmine, with the Genie warning him that he can't make Jasmine fall in love with him (among other things). Aladdin tells him that he never had that in mind, he merely wants to be a prince so that Jasmine would consider marrying him, believing that she merely sees him as a friend. Upon hearing that, the Genie prepares an elaborate entrance for Aladdin by transforming his monkey into an elephant to ride on, giving him an entire circus of animals and disguising himself as a civilian to shill him as "Prince Ali Ababwa" to the citizens of Agrabah.

When Aladdin lives the high life as Jasmine's betrothed, having already confessed his true identity to her, he still keeps the Genie's lamp on his person, which comes in handy when Jafar and his henchman capture Aladdin and attempt to drown him by throwing in the sea. The Genie appears when the lamp is accidently rubbed, with Aladdin being unable to make a wish due to having trouble to keep his breath in. The Genie interprets Aladdin's panicked noises as a wish to be rescued and complies, carrying Aladdin back on shore. When Aladdin returns to Agrabah and exposes Jafar as a villain and a fraud, Jafar is promptly exiled, but not before he sees the Genie's lamp and realizes that the boy he sent to retrieve is in fact the prince that caused him trouble.

After Jafar is seemingly dealt with and Aladdin got pretty much everything he ever wished for, he forgot about his promise to the Genie and brushes off his requests at making his last wish. This comes back to bite him when Jafar'S parrot Iago sneaks into the palace, stealing the Genies lamp, allowing for Jafar to become the Genie's new master. When Aladdin notices the Genie reshaping Agrabah into Jafar's liking, he confronts him about it, with the Genie lamenting that Aladdin can't do anything about it, it's part of Genie's predicament to only grant the wishes of the person who last rubbed the lamp. Jafar in turn exposes Aladdin as a fraud and exiles him, but Aladdin returns to battle Jafar, with the Genie cheering for him while clearly rooting against Jafar. Aladdin is cornered, but then hatches a plan when he looks at the Genie, he tells Jafar that the Genie is still more powerful than him, with Jafar falling for Aladdin's trick, wishing to become a more powerful genie. Aladdin then clears him up about the limitations of a genie's power, namely that he will be stuck in a lamp before someone rubs it, with Genie then taking Jafar's lamp and tossing it far out of the window.

After everything is dealt with, Genie then offers to use his last wish to turn Aladdin into a prince again, saying that Aladdin's happiness is more important than his freedom, along with saying that he wouldn't find a girl like Jasmine in a million years (he has looked). But Aladdin makes a selfless choice and decides to free the Genie, like he promised. The Genie embraces Aladdin and then celebrates his new freedom, the Sultan is so touched by Aladdin's choice that he gives him his blessing, saying that while Aladdin isn't a prince, he's better.

People have certainly noticed the chemistry between Aladdin and the Genie. The platonic ship between them is still more popular, though the romantic ship is no slouch. Often people draw these two as they look in the original 1992 designs
