- As the festival draws to its close, why do I feel somewhat lonely? Should the outcome be the same if we were to take it from the beginning? If I were to meet you in a dream, would my feelings be unresolved still?
- —Gentaro’s line to Dice in their duet, Once Upon a Time in Shibuya
GenDice is the slash ship between Gentaro Yumeno and Dice Arisugawa from the Hypnosis Mic fandom.
Canon[]
Gentaro and Dice are close friends and members of Fling Posse alongside Ramuda. Despite their little quarrels, they have a deep and important friendship. Their interactions are also used as a device for comedic romance. Gentaro and Dice have two duets, “Murder at the House of Magic” and “Once Upon a Time in Shibuya.” Their first impressions of each other were fairly positive as Fling Posse was formed. Although Gentaro and frowns upon Dice's disorderly lifestyle and thinks him slow-witted, he makes it evident he enjoys his company, as well as using him as source material for his novels.

Dice pets Gentaro who’s pretending to be a cat
Despite their contrasting personalities, with Gentaro being an elegant and renowned novelist while Dice is a lively and broke gambler, they get along fairly well and express their mutual care for one another. Although Dice is fairly childish around Gentaro, he's forced to play the straight man when Gentaro joins Ramuda in his troubling antics, like running around and pretending to be cats, driving Dice mad. Gentaro and Dice often meet up outside of team meetings, with Gentaro normally remains calm and withdrawn while Dice greets him fervently. Gentaro also has no qualms in spending money on Dice, frequently lending him money or taking him out to restaurants. Even when Gentaro threatens Dice to pay back, he makes it clear he means a friendly rapport, engaging in constant teasing and unconventional ways of helping Dice.

Gentaro in Dice's bed to mess with him
A main aspect of their relationship is Gentaro teasing Dice, eyes sparkling as Dice often doesn’t catch onto his lighthearted insults or gets annoyed. Gentaro manages to rope Ramada into teasing Dice, bringing down his guard to provoke his lack of wit, easily making up stories or lies, which Dice learned to recognize. Gentaro easily shifts the tone of the interaction to something more comedic, much to Dice’s annoyance. A prime example is when Gentaro teases saying they’re lovers from a past life, to which Dice huffs and denies thoroughly. Gentaro often terrifies Dice purposefully, such as suggesting to sell his organs after a lost game or bringing up ghost stories. Gentaro frequently joke-flirts with Dice, who is asleep, getting in bed with him and using a cheesy lovey-dovey dialect. Side F.P. & M shows more of their dynamic, with Gentaro quick to jump at any chance he has of teasing Dice.

Gentaro daydreaming about his “past life” with Dice
Despite their rather comedic interactions, they have a deep bond and care for one another with a fair amount of intimate moments showcasing their youthful friendship. They care and appreciate the relationship they’ve built over the course of Fling Posse, evident in their teamwork and day-to-day banter. Despite finding Gentaro insufferable at times, Dice gets easily defensive on his behalf and enjoys listening to Gentaro’s novel ideas and shows great excitement after Gentaro claims he’ll base his next protagonist off of Dice. Ramuda also teases the two, calling them the “bestest of BFFs”, which later prompts Gentaro’s teasing towards Dice. They often pick each other back up in battle, fighting together with Dice showcasing his worry for Gentaro, running up to him when he’s knocked down and expressing his concern.
However, overtime, their relationship turned absolutely firm and resolute, with Gentaro trusting Dice in every way possible, even giving his brother’s manuscript to Dice. With their combined spirit of wanting to save Ramuda, they’d end up coordinating their attacks even more, with Gentaro believing in Dice no matter what and trusting in his ability to perform the most arduous tasks. Even with all his teasing, Gentaro promptly notices when Dice is off and tries to avoid prying into his past, valuing his feelings and virtues.
FP & M[]
In Side F.P. & M. Chapter 10, Dice’s care for Gentaro is shown in full. Dice, naked after losing another match, calls Gentaro for help and starts begging on the floor for money. Gentaro is unamused and asks him to stop groveling, agreeing to help him buying back Dice’s clothes despite his protest. Afterwards, they end up being chased by a crowd of fans, crossing paths with Hifumi and Doppo as the four hide in an alleyway. After Doppo apologizes for the mishap, Hifumi takes note of Gentaro’s outfit and begins to call it old-fashioned and funny. Gentaro grows enraged and yells at Hifumi, grabbing his collar, trembling from fury. Dice quickly separates the two and asks Gentaro what’s wrong in a scolding tone; Gentaro hunches over in a sorry state, apologizing for letting his emotions get to him, leading Dice to soften his expression and ease Gentaro’s worries by assuring him everyone has their moments.

Gentaro thanking Dice for defending him earlier
After another snide remark directed to Gentaro from Hifumi, Dice explodes and yells at him to shut up, screaming at him in toppling anger. Dice is enraged by Hifumi’s disrespect and Gentaro’s subsequent distress, ignoring Doppo's repentance and instead gripping his collar and yelling at him to stop giving worthless apologies. Gentaro grabs Dice’s shoulder and thanks him for his defense but asks him to calm down. Dice begrudgingly lets go, but his remark towards Doppo—calling him baggage—results in Hifumi’s rage as they commence into a rap battle, with both duos backing each other up. As they fight fiercely, their battle is cut short as they're found and separated by fans. After the fight, the two are strolling beside one another and Dice whines about his hunger, leading to Gentaro smiling saying he’ll treat him to a meal. Dice is confused and asks, “Huh? That’s one of your pretty lies again, I bet.” to which Gentaro confirms he’s serious. Dice smiles with a blush, cheering as Gentaro explains he wants to thank Dice for earlier. Dice doesn't catch his words and asks what he said, leading for Gentaro to brush it off as they head to a nearby restaurant.

Gentaro leans in to mess with a sleeping Dice
After losing the Division Rap Battle against Matenro, Gentaro is dressing up when he spots a snoring and drooling Dice on his bed. Gentaro remarks to himself how Dice is still abed, hearing him sleep talk about winning the next big jackpot. He laughs, calling Dice’s sleeping slovenly while guessing he’s having a pleasant dream. He then decides to mess with him; Gentaro leans in, and the bed creaks as he whispers to Dice that he’s lost it all in the next game, making him groan as he starts to sob as he believes himself to have lost his next gamble. Gentaro starts laughing more about how simple Dice is, now on his bed and leaning against him. Gentaro shakes Dice and begins to call him, “My sweet Dice…” while talking in an old dialect, urging Dice to “awaken from his slumber.” The entire scene has Gentaro using hearts and flowers float around them before Dice feels it and wakes up; in a split second Gentaro is sitting away from him as Dice splutters and gets up in a hurry.

Gentaro is contemplating his next novel idea when he observes a news program discussing underground casinos. Instantaneously, Dice comes to mind, so Gentaro chases him down. After losing 2000 dollars in a match, Dice is sulking around when he’s horrified to see Gentaro standing behind him, who guesses that Dice lost another round, teasing, “My, my. How unfortunate.” Dice bows and opens his mouth to speak, but Gentaro cuts him off by stating he won’t give Dice any money. Dice is more devastated, now startled that Gentaro predicted his question as he sulks around. To this, Gentaro states he’s willing to lend Dice some money if he does a favor, and Dice instantly perks up and excitedly shouts that he’s down. Gentaro is amused by Dice’s willingness and asks if he’s willing to lay his life on the line for money, and Dice agrees fervently. Gentaro sighs, smiling and telling Dice he should reconsider his priorities, but nevertheless bringing Dice to a restaurant after noticing his growling stomach.

Dice agrees to show Gentaro
Gentaro asks Dice about underground casinos at the restaurant, noting down Dice’s answers attentively throughout the discussion. Afterwards, Gentaro shows his excitement upon the knowledge given, but asks Dice how he even learned all the information. Dice starts laughing nervously, saying it’s a long story. Gentaro asks Dice if he could learn more about the underground casinos, and Dice exhales smoke before denying his request. However, Dice pauses and says he’ll bring Gentaro to one place he knows, eliciting the latter’s profound gratitude.

Gentaro smiling at Dice’s eagerness
Once arrived at the casino unit, Gentaro and Dice observe the place in silent awe as they’re showed around the place. Afterwards, Gentaro thanks Dice for his help, who’s laughing in glee and saying they should get home. However, Gentaro snatches Dice’s wrist and begs the question of whether they should look for the casino’s owner. Dice is confused by the question but changes his mind instantly, smiling widely after Gentaro says they’ll gain 300 dollars, watching with a smile.

Dice on the look-out while Gentaro rests
Later as their plan goes into operation, they take turns watching on the lookout, and Dice tells Gentaro he should sleep first. Gentaro agrees and falls asleep leaning on a counter, and later Dice gently grabs his shoulder and urges him to wake up. After following their suspect and coming across a Party of Words building, the next day they’re left in shock wondering if the Party of Words is behind the casino.
Eventually, Gentaro and Dice resolve to the wary whatever plan the Party of Words is mustering after a close encounter and rap battle against a head member. Back at a restaurant, Dice brings up Ramuda’s odd behavior around them lately. Gentaro agrees with him and explains they should wait for Ramuda to talk to them about whatever is on his mind, and Dice agrees before Gentaro walks off; this prompts Dice to nervously peep up, leading Gentaro to tell Dice he already paid the tab, reading his mind. Dice laughs heartily and thanks him, before frowning in worry after Gentaro says he’s heading to the hospital. Gentaro assures that he’s only visiting a friend there, prompting Dice to give his condolences to whoever it is. Gentaro looks back with a glint in his eyes and thanks Dice, smiling.

Gentaro pretends to be Dice’s mom
Dice gets a message from Ramuda to meet up with him, and he encounters Gentaro at their rendezvous. Ramuda offers the two sweets, and Dice begs in to scarf them down, making Gentaro scold him for his bad diet. Ramuda giggles and says Gentaro is like Dice’s mom, before Gentaro switches into a lovey-dovey voice and swing his arm around Dice, pretending to be his mom saying, “That's right. This one doesn't listen to anything I say. Ramuda, as his friend, could you say something to my little Dice as well?” Dice is horrified and tries to get Gentaro off him, annoyed and calling him creepy before Gentaro jokes more about Dice’s “rebellious phase.”

Gentaro realizes he went too far after taking note of Dice’s reaction
However, Dice pauses and begins to talk about how his mom was nothing like that, until he cuts himself off. Gentaro then returns to normal and stares blankly as he speaks aloud that his own joke went too far. However, Ramuda pries into Dice’s words, asking about his relationship with his mom; with this, Gentaro hits Ramuda on the head and begins to darken. Ramuda whines about the uncalled attack, and Gentaro suddenly exclaims that he’s Dice’s brother, making the two horrified before Gentaro plainly says he was lying.
Ramuda is shocked for a second before he asks Dice again about his mother, and Gentaro looks down, and in the drama track he says, “Goodness, even though I steered the conversation off-course, you're going to put it back on track, hm?” Gentaro then lightly scolds him for prying into Dice’s past, so as a result, Ramuda apologizes to Dice, who’s now relieved.
However, the scene shifts almost instantly as Ramuda finds himself reeling over and vomiting blood. Gentaro and Dice both panic, as Gentaro orders Dice to call the cops, who follows. However, Ramuda screams at Dice to bring him his candy, and the latter refuses, indignant and trying to call an ambulance. In a haze, Gentaro jumps to get Ramuda’s candy without a doubt and hands it to him, saving his life.
Afterwards, Dice desperately makes sure Ramuda is alright while Gentaro announces they should go to a hospital, but Ramuda screams at them and insists otherwise. Dice is still adamant, but Gentaro tells him they should give Ramuda time. Still anxious, the duo leaves Ramuda to himself, despite growing anxious over his condition and beginning to brainstorm ways to get through to Ramuda, as the two were unaware of Ramuda’s origin.
FP M+ one-shot[]

Gentaro greets Dice
This one shot is a bonus chapter centered around Gentaro and Dice.
Dice is walking in a park, humming and content after his good luck streak. However, while he’s looking away, Gentaro starts singing, “Ohhh Miiiisssteeerrrr Dice!!” with a smiling, slapping Dice on the back as he jumps forward screaming. Dice asks Gentaro not to scare him like that, terrified while Gentaro casually greets him. Gentaro claps his hands and leans against Dice with a blush, fawning about how lucky he is to have met him here, explaining he needs help with a deadline.
Dice waves his fist around, scolding Gentaro to keep his deadlines when he’s a “Mr. Hotshot Author”, and to this, Gentaro sighs and drearily states he’s short on any ideas. Gentaro then comedically mimics Dice and declares that he’s a “veritable treasure trove of life experience”, making Dice clench his teeth in a sigh, as Gentaro drops his mocking act and observes that Dice is in a humored mood. Dice starts laughing maniacally, reading out all the lucky events that he encountered that day, overjoyed.

Gentaro and Dice in the “fanservice” scene.
However, Gentaro cuts his happiness short as he poses dramatically, explaining that Dice’s luck is bound to hit a dead end after the succession of victory. Dice believes him and begins to panic. Gentaro hums as he gets a notification from his phone and reveals he signed up for a giveaway contest under Dice’s name. This makes Dice scream in misery as he realizes his luck was used up, dropping to the floor in defeat. Gentaro picks him back up and declares that Dice has to undergo a trial to get back his luck, making the later nod vigorously and follow Gentaro to their first destination.
Gentaro brings Dice to an agency to show him all the possible job options, and the scene switches to move through different roles and time periods of the two in different outfits. Dice cuts it off and asks what the visions were all about, and Gentaro answers with a half drawn face, “Fanservice.” Dice shrugs it off and asks him for a reasonable occupation to take to keep his luck streak, so Gentaro runs off and urges Dice to sell cow bells on a street.

Dice realizes his luck was too good
Dice is incredulous by this preposition but Gentaro reminds him he needs to undergo the trials, posing and pointing dramatically at the crowd as Dice jumps up and begs in to rally an audience of explaining the utility of cow bells. Afterwards, Gentaro praises Dice’s business acumen, and Dice returns the compliment, blushing and looking over his money happily. However, Gentaro brings his sleeve to his mouth and prompts that Dice’s luck was far too good, and that now he fears what consequence will spring from this.

Dice begs Gentaro to hit him
Dice drops to the floor crying, desperate and jumping at Gentaro, gripping his shoulders. Dice asks him to hit him, leaving him stunned. Dice explains if he’s hit it could knock all the bad luck out of him, and bystanders start observing the two as Gentaro shakes his head and refuses repeatedly. Dice shakes Gentaro’s shoulders, crying and begging him as Gentaro explains he can’t hurt any of his wrists since he needs to write—Dice ends up dropping his money and it flies away into someone’s donation bin, making the two of them pause and watch in horror.

Gentaro gives a thumbs up and says, “Nice shot!”
Gentaro turns into a basketball player and gives a thumbs up, saying, “Nice shot!” as Dice freezes. Gentaro quickly comforts Dice, reminding him that now all his good luck is canceled out, and Dice returns to good spirits with a cheer.
Gentaro reminds Dice that he just lost all his money, making him horrified and swan dive to Gentaro’s feet, begging him for money. This time, Gentaro refuses, storming off as Dice clings to his feet and begs continually as Gentaro eventually lets Dice drag himself around.

Gentaro leads on Dice again
Later, Dice is eating the rice crackers supplied by the contest Gentaro won under Dice’s name, reading the novel Gentaro write that was based off of him. Dice claims he doesn’t see the resemblance of himself in the book, and Gentaro happily explains he garnered inspiration from Dice’s tales. Before their conversation continues, Gentaro reminds Dice that he borrowed money from Ramuda, making him panic and sob dramatically as Gentaro explains his fate is coming near. Gentaro sighs and claims he’ll assist Dice this time, so he perks up excitedly. Gentaro quickly says he lied, and Dice sinks into further misery as Ramuda passes by their conversation, commenting that the two are being “buddy-buddy” again.

Fanon[]
GenDice is mainly shipped for their contrasting personalities and tone alike, though it came to a rise after more of their dynamic was revealed with a more romantic undertone. Gentaro and Dice’s dynamic is favored in the fanbase, though since the two are teammates with a fair amount of fanservice and intimate moments, GenDice grew to be one of the most popular mainstream ship within the Hypnosis Mic fandom with around 830 works on Ao3. GenDice is considered as the main Fling Posse pairing, though it’s rivaled by others, notably RamuGen. Often, GenDice is shipped alongside Hifudo after the two duos’ encounter, or sometimes split into Dicedoppo and HifuGen. A common criticism is that Gentaro messes with Dice too much, but this has been alleviated after Gentaro was shown to back off whenever he felt he was crossing the line.
Since Gentaro was initially viewed as an elusive and uptight individual, fans were surprised to see him get goofy whenever he teases Dice, which added to the popularity, as fans saw it as a good aversion to Gentaro's character. GenDice was mainly shipped for their comedic and endearing dynamic where Dice is rather dense and hotheaded where Gentaro is levelheaded. Fans enjoy Gentaro’s thorough teasing towards Dice and notice how the two are constantly out together, less as teammates but more as companions. GenDice is mainly known for certain scenes, mainly ones displaying their close bond as well as their iconic duet lines or when Dice barks and meows for Gentaro. Fans also enjoy the variety of tropes GenDice fits into, such as Dice being a tsundere denying his feelings and the classic “Himbo x Smart” trope.
As a result, most fan works involve Dice being the sweeter and kinder half of the pair while Gentaro remains emotionless though amused. Angst is common in the fanbase, as it’s noted how Gentaro frequently lies about his true emotions towards Dice, leading to this concept being used in more heartbreaking and creative fanon works. Fireworks, festivals, and olden themes in general are a common theme due to Once Upon a Time in Shibuya. Fans also interpret Gentaro to be legitimately flirting with Dice when joking, as well as pointing out how genuine and interested Gentaro seems to be when discussing their past lives as lovers.
