Canon[]

Overview[]

As the Super 4 protagonist's nature is, Ruby and Gene personalities are very different but they are good friends and teammates thanks to uniting their strengths. Althought sometimes argue specially when Ruby requests to pilot The Chameleon or when they don't agree on how to proceed with the plan. Since Ruby is a pirate and grew up on her island which is set many centuries before Gene's modern city of Technopolis, Ruby is unfamiliar with technology at first (just like Alex and Twinkle) and so her sometimes cheeky and clumsy nature caused to break some of Gene's most important inventions, but nonetheless on the battlefield they were able to cooperate many times and Ruby's superior strength compared to the other pirates and outstanding fighting ability impressed Gene as he went to call her twice, the Queen of the Pirates. On Gene's turn, his several inventions have impressed Ruby as well throughout the series. It is more common for Gene to allow Ruby to pilot the Skyjet, a motorcycle-like vehicle that the Chameleon has stored.

Additionally, one unique fact they have in common is that they are the two only protagonists to have their respective personal origin story of 4 episodes. Alex only had one episode being the first part of the origins of the foundation of the Super 4.

Season 1[]

Unicorn Lady[]

The Super 4 had to capture an evil witch who hated love, and Alex though that in order to lure her out of her house, sending two lovers in front of her home would make her fall into the trap.

When Gene realized that Alex wanted him to play the boyfriend, he refuses, then Ruby asks the two why they are arguing but suddenly she realized as well that Alex wanted her to be the girlfriend and so she refuses as well.

A moment later, the "couple" finally accept by force and starts walking towards the house of the witch and reluctantly start pretending to be lovers.

As Alex is asking Twinkle if she's ready to undo the spell with her magical wand, Twinkle answers so, but doubts about what if the witch doesn't come out. Alex tells her that she doesn't have to worry since they are going to lure her with "a lot of love and sweetness".

Alex orders now to Gene and Ruby to hold one of their hands, which causes the two to look disgusted to each other for one moment but hold their hands right after. Ruby looks at him while telling that he is gonna pay for that.

And for the final touch, Alex starts making signs with his lips giving the sign that he wants them to kiss, but since the couple are far away they misunderstood it, as Ruby first thought that he wanted them to blow towards the house, but Gene tells her that he thinks Alex wants them to whistle. The couple starts whistling, but Alex tells them that what he actually meant is a kiss. The two react surprised and as they look at each other with their eyes wide opened thinking on what to do (also Ruby appeared to be blushing a little), a second after, Gene gets mentalized while closing his eyes and kisses Ruby on her cheek, much to her disgustment.

The witch comes out and transforms Gene and Ruby into unicorns. After Alex is able to undo the spell by kissing the witch, they return back to normal. In the end of the episode, Ruby still agrees with the witch that kisses are a bit disgusting.

Since the series doesn't really follow any storyline, the kiss between Gene and Ruby doesn't have any especial meaning and the characters do not seem to remember the scene later in the series.

Season 2[]

Chasing the Chameleon[]

During this episode the pirates set a trap to fool and distract the Super 4 in order to steal the Chameleon, their vehicle of transportation. And so Gene blames Ruby for not letting him calculate all the risks due to her wanting to jump into action recklessly. The Super 4 needed to pursue the Chameleon with any other medium of transport, and so they also fooled the pirates from one big ship in order to steal it from them. Ruby then tries to train her friends into the basics of navigating. Whenever they get close on retrieving the Chameleon, Gene and Ruby start arguing about which is the right time to jump onto it. After several times, Alex orders them to stop as the actual trouble is their arguments. When Gene and Ruby realise the facts, they try to cooperate by trusting and combining their timing and instincts. After Gene is retrieving the control of the Chameleon through his holo-pad from the distance, Ruby is fighting and kicking out all the pirates inside, one of the fights caused to accidentally press the button of auto-destruction of the Chameleon, and so Gene tells her that now it all depends on her. He guides and tells her which wires must be pulled out in order to stop the auto-destruction, but since he didn't remember, Ruby pulls all them out as she followed her pirate instinct. After realising how good their teamwork turned out, Ruby said that they make "such a great couple", and Gene complements her as well by saying that she saved the Chameleon all alone.

Moments[]

  • On Season 1 Episode "Dragon Raiders", Ruby couldn't stop teasing Gene when he knew that he did a mistake, as Gene was often saying that he never makes any mistake which caused Ruby to feel a bit annoyed. Even though in the end Gene proved to be right an funnily called Ruby "pulp-head".
  • In the ending of Season 2 Episode "Saving Pirate Sharkbeard", Twinkle compliments Ruby by telling that she had been "truly sensational!" and then Gene added "Yes, as always."
  • In the ending of Season 2 Episode "Chasing the Chameleon" Ruby told Gene that "they make such a great couple" even though she just meant it as that their team-work was excellent. Additionally, Gene was right when he said that most of the work was done by her, she kicked all the pirates outside and stopped the Chameleon's auto-destruction.
  • On Season 2 Episode "Pirate Virus" Gene ironically called Ruby "dear" when she was asking him to open already a door from Technopolis, to which Gene responded to her "Dear Ruby, you must know that there are up to 72 thousand million of different codes and so it's impossible to open this door in less than one minute..."
  • On Season 2 Episode "Saturday Knight Fever", Ruby taught Gene how to dance (like a pulp) at the beginning but he failed how to do so. When Gene accidentally lost control over his foot, Ruby was holding his head so keep him down when they were observing the Black Baron's plans.
  • On Season 2 Episode "Super Fast", Gene nicely asked her while rolling his eyes for if she was too disappointed for not having won that diamond trophy, to which she responded him with "well, a diamond is always fine but glory and chocolate isn't half bad either."
  • Gene while piloting the skyjet, saved Ruby from the dragon territory by carring her from her waist in episode "The White Rabbit" since Alex was transformed into the rabbit and couldn't be there to help.
  • Gene has called her twice the "Queen of the Pirates", first on episode "Rage of the Dragon" (which he claimed that she was the "Queen of the Pirates and not of punctuality") and second in episode "Sharkruby", whom after Ruby had defeated every pirate, she said she was proud that she proved to the pirates that a girl can be as strong as them, but Gene proudly told her that she is even stronger than them, since she defeated Sharkbeard!
  • Gene has also showed in episode "Sharkruby" that Ruby is way more smarter than the other pirates as he showed to her in his holo-pad an analysis from her brain and another from the brain of another pirate, and Gene explained that "the red represents the brain and green represents the intersideral empty". The images showed Ruby's brain fully in red proving her smartness and the other pirate's brain was almost green with just a few red points, which Gene added as well that, unlike her, the other pirates are undisciplined per nature and uncapable of learning nothing.

Fanon[]

Geneby remains one of the popular pairings within the community. Since they shared many memorable moments together and most specially the highlighting of episode Unicorn Lady, recognition skyrocketed and fan works scoring. They're called on for their Opposites Attract prompt among Red Oni, Blue Oni tendencies.

Even though this is just fan speculation, it's interesting that Gene was the one who took initiative when Alex ordered them to kiss in Unicorn Lady, it could possibly mean that Gene was interested on kissing someone since he never did it, specially because all the scientists in technopolis are rational and don't seem to believe in emotions as love.
