Chapter 1: Act V: Rewinding Raindrops.[]

The Battle Beneath the Crescent.[]

Geshu Lin Introduction

Geshu Lin bravely rises to fight against Ovathrax.

The Northfall Barrens of Jinzhou have been a battleground for centuries, and three years ago, Geshu Lin stood revered as a mighty and victorious General of the Midnight Rangers in this never-ending battle against Ovathrax, a Threnodian capable of transforming fallen soldiers into Tacet Discords using the frequencies of weapons. Geshu Lin is credited with devising crucial battle strategies and commanding a charge that ventured into the deepest parts of the Suspended Ruins. From the retellings of his story, Geshu Lin is described to be courageous, headstrong, and strongly valuing victory above all else, rising to face the threat of Ovathrax fearlessly.

Geshu Lin Sacrifices Himself

Geshu Lin sacrifices himself.

However, "The Battle Beneath the Crescent" would dictate the beginning of what was the end of Geshu Lin's winning streak. This battle saw humanity's first recorded encounter with Retroact Rain enhanced by the Threnodian power, which led to the rise of violent phantoms of deceased soldiers and Tacet Discords to swarm the battlefield, causing mass chaos and confusion. During the Chaos, Geshu Lin, branding his greatsword of black flames, issued his final command for his soldiers to remain steadfast no matter what happened, and sacrificed himself to the black flames for power before charging straight at Ovathrax, never to be seen again.

Jiyan takes up the mantle

Jiyan leads the soldiers to safety.

While the remaining soldiers despair over the loss of their general, Jiyan, a field medic and soldier, bravely stood up to lead in Geshu Lin's absence and fought a hard-won retreat, accompanied by the deafening roar and striking lighting of the Teal Dragon (Qingloong). Wielding wind energy channelled into the shape of a fierce teal dragon, he is considered invincible by his soldiers and commands the entire army with both determination and courage.

Jiyan is chosen by the sentinel

Jiyan is chosen by the sentinel to be the next general.

It is subsequently after this battle that Jiyan officially becomes the youngest General of the Midnight Ranges at 20 years old, handpicked by Sentinel Jué. As a person born into a medical family and extremely adept at the craft, Jiyan is especially emphatic and values the preservation of human lives above all, which is reflected in his military strategies. On the other hand, despite his sacrifice, the legacy of Geshu Lin is stained, with many blaming him for the massive losses that occurred under his command, resulting in him gaining a notorious reputation among those in Huanglong.

Chapter 1: Act VI: Grand Warstrome.[]

Encounter with Geshu Lin.[]

Act Six opens with Jiyan's perspective as he and his soldiers prepare for outbreaks of Tacet Discords, this time armed with antidotes to counter the phantoms caused by the Retroact Rain. Jiyan plans to march to the Northfall Barrens as soon as the rain clears, noting to himself how a stronger emotional connection to an area leads to more intense hallucinations.

Emotional Connection to Phantoms

Jiyan explains how emotional connection affects phantoms.

While conducting an inspection of the base and seeing several phantoms of past soldiers created by the rain, Jiyan reflects on how, after becoming General, he revamped the Midnight Ranger's recruitment tactics to ensure that the primary combat units consisted of Resonators, while the more at-risk Non-Resonator members were reassigned to support roles. Jiyan solemnly remarks that he saw admirable courage in the eyes of ordinary people but ultimately could not allow any more unnecessary casualties. This may not have been the case under Geshu Lin's command, which might have contributed to the large number of casualties recorded during his lead. Jiyan also acknowledges the continued value of Geshu Lin's previous battle strategies but expresses a desire to revise them to better suit the current situation. As he moves through the base, Jiyan notices an illusion of Geshu Lin's greatsword and questions why he is seeing it.

Phantom Soldier

Jiyan is confronted by a phantom soldier of the past.

After completing the inspection, Jiyan encounters a phantom of a soldier from three years ago, created by the Retroact Rain. The phantom believes they are preparing for the Battle Beneath the Crescent and reports that conditions are unfavourable, but it may be their last chance to organize another attack. The soldier also says their medic, who is revealed to have been Jiyan, advised against proceeding with the attack. The phantom then begins to beg for Jiyan's help before disintegrating from sight.

Geshu Lin Appears

The phantom of Geshu Lin appears to Jiyan.

It is then that a phantom of Geshu Lin materializes behind Jiyan and remarks that perhaps Jiyan was right to advise against attacking. However, he reiterates that it was their only chance to strike at the time and expresses that he could not stand to sit back and do nothing. When Jiyan remains silent, Geshu Lin grows irritated and stresses that Jiyan is no different—they all bleed and suffer on the battlefield.

No other choice

Geshu Lin argues there is no other choice.

He insists there is no other choice but to push forward and keep fighting until every Tacet Discord is killed. Geshu Lin declares that he would not allow his soldiers to succumb to hallucinations and that he alone would pave the way forward using his Forte. As Jiyan turns to face him, Geshu Lin holds his head in his hand and fiercely states that, even if thousands of his men die, they must win the battle by any means necessary.

Cut from the same cloth

Geshu Lin remarks they are cut from the same cloth.

Looking Jiyan in the eyes, Geshu Lin asks what he would have done on that day in his position. Jiyan replies that they fight to protect what they cherish, including their comrades' lives. With conviction, Jiyan tells Geshu Lin that they must never build their victory upon endless sacrifices. Geshu Lin smiles and laughs, stating that he and Jiyan are cut from the same cloth. Jiyan agrees and swears that he draws his blade to fight for what he believes in and will stop at nothing to see it through, just like Geshu Lin. After this final conversation, Geshu Lin's phantom vanishes. A soldier remarks that Jiyan appears pale, but he brushes it off and prepares to engage in the next battle against the incoming waves of Tacet Discords.

Fanon[]

With the official release of Wuthering Waves, Geshuyan has steadily climbed in popularity amongst fans of the game who have reached the later acts of Chapter 1; it is especially popular within the CN and EN fandoms. The appeal of the ship is broadly centred on the lore connections between the two characters, as Jiyan was a medic under Geshu Lin's command, and when Geshu Lin disappeared, Jiyan took up the mantle in his stead and became a renowned General in his own right. Their contrasting personalities, ideologies and conditions for victory, make character exploration for this ship ripe for interpretation. Especially considering that, despite Geshu Lin and Jiyan acting as literary foils, the characters consider each other to be somewhat similar and, at least based on Jiyan's inner thoughts, appear to hold some level of respect for one another as Generals. Geshu Lin's bold and fearless demeanour contrasts with Jiyan's thoughtful and attentive nature, providing a rich backdrop for emotional depth and character development. Additionally, fans have noted how it appeared only Jiyan could see Geshu Lin's phantom, and if that could suggest a stronger connection, considering the multiple remarks Jiyan has made about stronger emotions making for stronger illusions.

Although, not much is known about Geshu Lin aside from what is shown in cutscenes and in-game text. From reading Jiyan's character stories, his personality is made very clear. He is described as having an unyielding will, yet suffers from nightmares about failing his soldiers. He is a silent caretaker carrying around medicines in his gourd in case anyone is in need, showing tenderness to his comrades that sometimes goes unnoticed. He is haunted by the voices of the dead but continues to fight for both the living and the deceased. From analysing these character stories and contrasting them against what is available of Geshu Lin's character traits, fans have sparked many discussions and interpretations within the fandom about the potential dynamics of this ship, often exploring tropes such as Hurt/Comfort, Protective/Supportive dynamics, Slow Burn narratives, and the possibility of Enemies to Lovers scenarios.
