Girlpai is the het ship between Girlfriend and Senpai from the Friday Night Funkin' fandom.
Canon[]
Senpai is a video game character within Girlfriend's favorite dating sim. When Girlfriend decides to play the game with Boyfriend, her romantic partner, they are sucked into it and meet Senpai in person as pixelated characters. Girlfriend instantly catches Senpai's eye, and he refers to her as "fine maiden". He challenges Boyfriend to a rap battle to see who will earn Girlfriend's affection. If he loses, Senpai loses his polite, handsome demeanor and becomes furious, going as far as threatening to force Girlfriend into participating in carnal activities with him despite her current relationship with Boyfriend.
Reaching his breaking point, Spirit breaks free from Senpai's body, ultimately killing the sim. It's depicted that since Senpai's sole purpose of existing is to swoon the player, it explains his determination to win Girlfriend's heart. This suggests that his love may not be genuine and is merely programmed into tricking him into believing otherwise. Girlfriend has also played his game many times before the events of the week. His sudden outburst may suggest he isn't used to losing or being rejected as a romantic parnter.
PhantomArcade, official creator of the game, explained the reason into making Senpai was to put Boyfriend and Girlfriend in a Dragon Quest-esque game but intended to keep it romance themed to fit with the game. He explained it was difficult to avoid inflicting a yandere trope into the week, which likely could take inspiration from Yandere Simulator. He settled with making Senpai into a "bishonen pretty boy" and the twist is he becomes an "evil pretty boy". The yandere trope generically depicts a schoolgirl and or female falling for her Senpai and or male love interest. In this concept, however, the roles are swapped with Senpai swooning for Girlfriend and threatening to castrate Boyfriend for being with her.
Fanon[]
Girlpai isn't a widely acknowledged ship, but it is decently popular within the fandom. Fanart depicts Girlfriend in a schoolgirl outfit dating Senpai to fit the dating sim's overall theme. Other media showcases the battle between Boyfriend and Senpai for Girlfriend's love in reference to their original game plot in Week 6. The ship can become confused with GirlSpirit, the ship between Girlfriend and Spirit, since Spirit is a soul embedded within Senpai's coding and remained dormant until it finds a substitute to free itself. The ship is easily overshadowed by rival canonical pairing, BoyGirl.
In other depictions, they are paired alongside Boyfriend in a polymarous relationship, SenBoyGirl.
