GiyuTan is the slash ship between Giyu Tomioka and Tanjiro Kamado from the Demon Slayer fandom.

Canon[]

First Meeting[]

The two first met after Nezuko became a demon. While Tanjiro was carrying Nezuko through the snow, he suddenly saw Giyu in front of him. Giyu tries to kill Nezuko, which results in Tanjiro begging him to spare her. Giyu gets angry and tells him to never give others a chance to murder you, and asks why he didn't use his hachet to fight back. As Giyu stabs Nezuko, Tanjiro throws a stone to try to get him to stop. Giyu knocks out Tanjiro, but then sees his hachet swinging at him from above. He tries to fight Nezuko but she kicks him away and runs towards her brother. At this moment, Giyu thinks that she's about to devour Tanjiro. Instead, she goes in front of him and shields him from Giyu. This is when he realizes that these two siblings are different and starts caring for them. Giyu then sends Tanjiro to Sakonji Urokodaki so that he can train to become a demon slayer.

Mount Natagumo Arc[]

During the Mount Natagumo Arc, Shinobu tries to kill Tanjiro and Nezuko. Giyu blocks her with his katana to protect the siblings. This shows how much he cares for Tanjiro and Nezuko, even going against the corps rules protecting a demon. He tells Tanjiro to take his sister and run. Shortly after, Giyu and Shinobu start to fight.

Hashira Introduction[]

During the Hashira Introduction, the nine Hashira are introduced. Giyu is seen standing alone far from the others. Tanjiro feels guilty, thinking that even Giyu is here because of him. Obanai is holding down Tanjiro to make sure he doesn't escape, however he mangages to break the rope tied around his wrists. Giyu grabs Obanai's hand to prevent him from doing anything to Tanjiro. After Kagaya arrives, his children read a letter from Sakonji Urokodaki that says Nezuko has not eaten a human for two years and if she does then Tanjiro, Giyu and himself will all commit sepukku.

Hashira Training Arc[]

During the Hashira Training Arc, Giyu and Tanjiro bond and talk a bit.

Tanjiro tries to talk with Giyu

Every Hashira is participating in the Hashira training, except for Giyu. He is seen sitting alone in a house, when Tanjiro calls out to him from outside. Giyu doesn't answer but Tanjiro goes in anyway. Tanjiro sits down and tries to talk with him, although he is not very interested. He asks Giyu to train him and he replies with a simple no. Giyu says he's mad because Tanjiro didn't fully master water breathing. He says someone needs to become the Water Hashira, since the spot is vacant. This confuses Tanjiro, as Giyu is the current Water Hashira. Giyu tells Tanjiro to go away. Tanjiro then remembers Kagaya's message which states that he wants to talk to Giyu.

Tanjiro kept talking to Giyu all afternoon and night. On the fourth day, Giyu finally decided to talk. He tells Tanjiro about how he entered final selection with Sabito who single-handedly killed every demon on the mountain. However, everyone besides him got accepted in the selection. Giyu thinks that he is not worthy of being a Hashira because he thinks he only passed due to Sabito saving him. Tanjiro tries to cheer him up by inviting him to have a soba eating contest. After spending time with Tanjiro, Giyu is committed to the Hashira Training.

Giyu and Sanemi are seen fighting as a part of training. Tanjiro mistakens it for a real fight and tries to intervene. Sanemi gets mad and punches Tanjiro, knocking him out. When he wakes up he sees Giyu beside him. They start talking about what Sanemi likes, and Giyu says that he'll make sure he has ohagi in his pocket the next time he sees him. Tanjiro eventually gets Giyu to smile.

Later, during the Infinity Castle Arc, Tanjirō and Giyū continue to walk throughout the castle. Tanjirō notices that him and Giyū have not encountered any Upper Ranks yet, and is curious about where Muzan and the rest of the Hashira are. As Tanjirō tries to motivate himself, the hallway they are in begins to rapidly shake. Tanjirō then begins to smell something familiar, and Giyū warns him to stay back, signalling that something was approaching from above them. Akaza makes his entrance as he emerges from the celling and immediately begins to mock Tanjirō. Tanjirō and Akaza ultimately recognize one another as they yell each other's names. Tanjirō and Giyū both begin their fight against Akaza. After Tanjirō slices Akaza's face vertically using Sun Breathing, Giyū watches and notes in amazement how much Tanjirō's techniques have improved. Giyū even recognizes Tanjirō's newfound strength as the same as a Hashira. Giyū continues to praise Tanjirō for how much damage he's done to Akaza, despite his rank as Upper Moon 3, leading Giyū to recall his first ever meeting with Tanjirō and compare it to how Tanjirō is now. Giyū remembered how Tanjiro bowed his head and pleaded with him to spare his sister. Giyū reminds himself that Tanjirō can now fight and that his life and dignity will not be taken away.

Akaza then declares that they should actually begin fighting, and they do just that. Giyū starts to attack Akaza using Water Breathing and remains quiet for most of the battle, meanwhile Akaza spews rapid questions and actively tries to engage in conversation with him. Tanjirō then attempts to land a blow, but to his dismay, Akaza suddenly appears behind him and tries to decapitate Tanjirō with his bare fist. Tanjirō struggles to get a hold of his breathing technique, but is saved by Giyū after he cut through Akaza's arm. Tanjirō attempts another blow but Akaza kicks him backwards, leaving Tanjirō with a bloody nose. Giyū jumps in front Tanjirō to cooperate with him in attacking Akaza while Tanjirō is down. Akaza continues to engage in conversation with Giyū, repeatedly asking Giyū for his name, but he only dismisses all his questions and refuses to answer. Akaza then kicks Giyū through a wall, warranting Tanjirō to call out for him. Giyū was left out of the battle for a while due to be stuck somewhere behind the wall. As Tanjirō and Akaza continue their battle, Giyū appears out of nowhere and saves Tanjirō again after slashing through Akaza's arms. Tanjirō happily greets Giyū, as he is glad to see him. In the next chapter, Tanjirō calls out for Giyū and right then and there, Giyū unlocks his Demon Slayer Mark. Giyū slashes at Akaza, which leads Akaza to realize that the Demon Slayer Mark had appeared. Tanjirō sat in the sidelines, detailing everything that he noticed during their fight. Tanjirō saw that Akaza immediately matched Giyū's increased speed, he also remarked on the fact that Giyū will lose stamina soon, and that they shouldn't waste all their energy on fighting Akaza.

When everyone thought that Tanjiro died, Giyu mentioned that he failed to protect another person. When it turns out that Tanjiro has become a demon, Giyu decided that he has to kill him. After a while of fighting, Kanao Tsuyuri injects him with wisteria and he turns back to normal. The battle was over. While Tanjiro was waking up, all of the Hashiras hands were reaching out for him, and Giyu's hand can be seen.

After the final battle, Giyu's demeanor became happier and he would go on to exchange letters with Tanjiro.

Fanon[]

GiyuTan has a fairly large fanbase, due to the fact that their friendship is the one of the most fleshed out in the series. With this many people started to take a liking to the pairing, due to them sharing a great bond. It is one of the most popular slash ships for both characters. There are numerous fan fictions and fan art depicting their relationship and immense care for each other.

People either have them becoming a couple somewhere during the story. While others have created AU's of the two where it has either Giyu aged down or Tanjiro aged up.

Whilst there are many people who like to pair Tanjiro and Giyu romantically, there are also many people who prefer the two as just friends. This is mainly because of the age gap between Tanjiro and Giyu and due to the fact that many also see Giyu as a older brother figure for Tanjiro.
