Gladrioca is the slash ship between José Carioca and Gladstone Gander from The Three Caballeros and DuckTales fandoms.

Canon[]

José and Gladstone are both characters that exist within the wide-encompassing "Disney Ducks" universe. José is a parrot from Brazil and a close friend of Donald Duck, first introduced in the 1942 Disney animated movie Saludos Amigos. Since then he has gone on to appear in two more theatrical films, as well as a number of animated series and his own popular comic series in Brazil. Gladstone is the cousin of Donald, first introduced in the Donald Duck comic series in 1948. He has since appeared in both iterations of the DuckTales series, and is a popular character in Italian comics. José and Gladstone have crossed over a few times in comic, but have notably never met in animation. Although they both attend Webby's birthday party in the series finale of DuckTales, the two are not shown interacting with each other.

The 1969 Zé Carioca comic "O Desastronauta" is one of their earliest appearances together. José reads in the newspaper that anyone who does not pay their debts will be sent to prison. He sees Gladstone walking down the street, and notes that he owes him money. He decides to run in the other direction so he doesn't get caught. José decides to get himself a job, and answers a listing for a position as a chauffer. However, he soon learns that the vehicle he will be driving is a rocketship. He is shot off into space, but soon the scientists that hired him realize he doesn't know how to get back to Earth. They gather José's friends, including Gladstone, and tell them that José will be lost forever in space. Gyro Gearloose says that he would forgive José's debt, if only he would come back, but Gladstone disagrees. He says that a debt is a debt, and that if José does not pay him back then that would be very unlucky for him. Gladstone's unnatural sense of luck causes a meteorite to hit José's rocket and send him back to space. Once he lands, Gladstone says that his luck has never failed him and that he now forgives José's debt. José smiles at his friends, then asks if someone can lend him $20.

In another Zé Carioca comic entitled "Sorte, Azar e Malandragem", José takes a trip to Duckburg to visit with his friend Donald. They run into Gladstone in the park, and he and José exchange pleasantries. Gladstone takes a jab at Donald, saying he's unlucky, then tells them that he has a date with Daisy later. Donald flies off the handle, and José attempts to calm him down. Gladstone shows off an enourmous diamond ring he found on the ground, which he intends to give to Daisy. Donald, feeling defeat, walks away. José follows, asking if he's going to give up so easily. José thinks Gladstone too conceited, and thinks they should teach him a lesson. José dresses up as a fortune teller, and sets up shop in the park. Gladstone and Daisy drop in to get their fortune told, and José tells them that the ring belongs to someone in the financial district. Imagining the reward, Gladstone takes the ring back from Daisy and runs off. José laughs, then encourages Donald to give his own, smaller ring to Daisy. The trio take off in Donald's car, but halfway to their destination they run out of gas. José hops out and tries to flag down a passing motorist; who just turns out to be Gladstone, in a brand new car he got for returning the ring. José is flabbergasted that his fortune telling worked, and watches as Gladstone invites Daisy into the car and drives off with her.

Despite having minimal interactions, the two are sometimes compared to one another. In the Zé Carioca comics, José is lazy, and often somewhat down on his luck. He often relies on random strokes of good luck to get by in life. Gladstone can also be considered lazy, as his own sense of good luck is supernatural in nature and he's never had to work for anything in his life. The two dress similarly, with both wearing hats, jackets, and bowties, and walking with some sort of apparatus on their arm (José's umbrella and Gladstone's cane). Both José and Gladstone are considered to be "opposites" to Donald, which makes them similar in nature to each other.

Fanon[]

Gladrioca was pioneered by Tumblr user Jorated (blog since deleted), who envisioned José and Gladstone as either a college fling or long-time exes. The majority of the fandom ran with this interpretation, and enjoy putting Glastone into awkward situations where he is forced to confront José again when he learns that his ex is dating his cousin.

Fans enjoy the similarities that can be drawn between the two characters, and the rivalry that they are sometimes shown to have in the European and Brazilian comics. This ship is most popular with fans outside of the United States, as neither character is very popular in English language material. Some also enjoy shipping the two characters simply for their visual aesthetics, which work well together in fanart.

There is currently only 1 work for this ship on AO3.
