Gokusere is the het ship between Son Goku and Usagi Tsukino (Serena Tsukino from DIC Dub localization) from the Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon fandoms.
Canon[]
There isn't much to say in canon about Gokusere because neither of the characters has officially met in a significant canon or non-canon work that has an exclusive focus on them specifically, whether from Toei Animation or commentary by the late Akira Toriyama or the still-present Naoko Takeuchi.
Despite this, there have been a few official promotional animation calendars by Toei Animation from 1993-1994 that have showcased both Son Goku and Usagi (Serena) near each other, along with numerous characters from Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and other anime under Toei Animation. However, Goku and Usagi during this time were the most noticeable stars being focused on the calendar.
As for the ship's popularity. Gokusere began somewhere around the 2000s after the television block of Toonami began airing Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon back to back around the same time.
Due to this introduction by Toonami to western audiences, some people associated Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon with each other due to found similarities of origin despite the shows' tonal and genre differences of Material Arts Shonen and Magical girl adventure.
Fanon[]
For the personality compatibility appeal for Goku and Usagi from their cheerful, upbeat, and humorous antics in their average daily life, with a mix of their intense duty or being up for the challenge of world-ending stakes. However, sometimes the element of Son Goku and Sailor Moon being heroes for the world does come into play for their relationship across the fanfics or fan arts, mainly angst or reflection of Goku, despite being a hero by his actions doesn't see as himself as hero and have thoughts leaving the world because danger always follow him in shape or form. As for Usagi, it is mainly from a duty responsibility she never asked for, and she must face the many low points (despite the highs in her life) of heartbreak and loss.
Also, sometimes the element of Sailor Moon and Son Goku's connection with the moon is brought up. (Usagi as the moon princess and Great Ape/Oozaru power along with Super Saiyan 4/SSJ4.)
Also, due to the popularity of Gokusere in the 2000s and the overall idea of Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon has spawned some sequel ships like Gohan x Chibiusa. It should be noted that Gohan x Chibiusa, when shipped, the ship of Gokusere is a notable absence to avoid confusion.
(When shipping is involved, a character who canonically has a child in the future sometimes, if the child is compatible with the other partner's personality by sharing traits in the relationship. Sometimes the fandom makes the person the child of that person in the Au.)
For example, Son Gohan is commonly in fan AUs, is the son of Bulma and Son Goku, because Gohan's nerdy behavior could fit as a good connection from Bulma's intelligence, or Chibiusa is the daughter of Rei and Usagi because her fiery and sassy personality. In case of this context, and if Gokusere is present could make Gohan x Chibiusa look like incest, so the ship is usually optimized out.
As for a rival ship for Gokusere, because it is a crack ship, there isn't a proper rival pairing that exists outside of canon, like GoChi or MamoUsa. As for main fanon, rivals for Gokusere would be between GoBul and ReiUsa as fan favorites. Lastly, for equality of crack ship pairing for Gokusere would be Rei x Vegeta.
Despite the number of people shipping Goku and Usagi romantically, with a healthy number of people who ship them platonically as good ol' friends.
Despite Gokusere being a popular fandom ship, it remains largely a relic of early 2000s internet shipping culture. However, some fans still actively create Gokusere fan art and content even today, keeping the pairing alive in niche corners of the fandom.
Controversy[]
As for the controversy, for Gokusere, the only constant controversy that is brought up a lot is the age difference between Son Goku and Usagi (Serena), which that Goku is usually age around his late 20's to 40's across the entire Dragon Ball Z, while Sailor Moon in the anime is 16 at the end the series.
However, it should be noted that the Gokusere is mostly characteristic of shipping for Goku after his run in Classic Dragon Ball from the 23rd world tournament, making him 18 years old while Sailor Moon is still 16, thus removing the massive age gap between them. However, some people use the Sailor Moon manga age in the series, which is already in her 20s, and use Goku's average normal age (in Dragon Ball Z) to ship with.
