Gonfumbine is the het ship between Gonff and Columbine from the Redwall fandom.

Canon[]

Gonff and Columbine met in Mossflower after her arrival in Mossflower Woods. The two would be sent as part of a mission to recruit Chib the Robin as a spy against the Woodlanders’ enemies. Columbine quickly became taken with Gonff’s roguish charms, and was encouraged in her interest by Gonff’s friend Martin the Warrior. Gonff would pretend to snatch two of Columbine’s whiskers off her face, but actually tricked her with a pair of his own.

Gonff would later bid farewell to Columbine as he, Martin, and Dinny the mole departed for Salamandastron. Throughout their ensuing separation, Gonff speaks frequently of Columbine and often makes up songs about her. Columbine, for her part, also misses Gonff and becomes melancholy over his prolonged absence. At one point she takes to standing sentry near Brockhall, hoping to be the first to see Gonff and the others returning home.

At Salamandastron, Gonff waves away the female hares’ attempts at flirtation by citing his relationship with Columbine. Martin, Dinny, and their comrade Log-a-Log are quick to tease Gonff, embarrassing him. Later, when they capture the Bloodwake and Dinny renames her Wuddship, Gonff remarks that he would have liked to name the vessel after Columbine. The male hares then jokingly question whether Columbine herself resembles a ship, irking Gonff.

When Wuddship arrives in Mossflower and is challenged by the inhabitants, Dinny announces them by declaring Gonff’s affection for Columbine with a loud shout. Gonff promptly throws him overboard into the River Moss. Later, as Gonff tells the story of their adventures, Columbine sits next to him and holds his hand so tightly that he is unable to free it for gesturing along with his account. Columbine is briefly jealous at hearing that Gonff danced with a crab but is reassured when Gonff voices the belief that the crab was a male. She is then touched when Gonff presents her with a necklace of seashells, though when Dinny admits to having collected them Columbine makes a joking reference to Gonff’s crab dancing.

After the end of the Great Mossflower War, Gonff and Columbine were married. During the celebration feast, Columbine ordered Gonff to assist her with a task, to which he agreed with outrageous declarations of his affection. Columbine would later claim that she had put an end to Gonff’s thievery. The pair were also found a home to stay in, a building that appeared to be a church called St. Ninian’s.

However, in The Legend of Luke Columbine and Gonff, together with their son, appear to be living-or else making an extended visit-to Redwall Abbey. Columbine once again remains behind as Gonff sets out on a quest, though this time she has their son to keep her occupied. Gonff expresses a longing for his wife and son during his journey. The family is later joyously reunited when Gonff and the others return.

Children[]

Gonff and Columbine had at least one child together, a son. In Mossflower he is called Gonff, son of Gonff. However, in The Legend of Luke the character is called Gonflet. In this book they also adopt the orphaned Trimp, a hedgehog, and Chugger, a squirrel.

Fanon[]

Gonff and Columbine, as a canon pairing in the Redwall series, enjoys a fair amount of popularity. This, however, is confined to fans of the books, as the Nelvana animated series never adapted Mossflower and thus the pairing never appeared onscreen like MarRose or MattiFlower.

There are 7 five tagged with the pairing on AO3, two of which are rated Mature.
