Green Mushrooms is the friendship between Luigi and Toad from the Super Mario fandom.

Canon

Luigi and Toad have been established to be friends since Super Mario Bros. 2, where them discovering a door to an alternate dimension from Mario's dream while on a picnic together leads to the two of them becoming part of the game's playable roster. Though the events of the game were revealed to be another dream of Mario, Toad's friendship with Mario and Luigi was later canonized anyway. Toad would assist the brothers throughout the series, either as a playable character or as an ally through the Toad Houses.

The Luigi's Mansion series is the first time the franchise had put specific focus on Luigi interacting with the Toads by himself. In the first game, Luigi meets a Toad crying in the mansion's foyer, comforting the little guy. Toad says was sent by Princess Peach herself after Mario reportedly went missing, he was crying because he couldn't find him. Toad offers to help Luigi find him by staying in the foyer and saving Luigi's progress. Other Toads in the mansion fulfill the same purpose, aside from one who is found by Luigi in a washroom, crying because he dropped something important into the toilet. Luigi reassures him and uses his plumbing abilities to retrieve the key the Toad had dropped.

In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Luigi encounters multiple Toads who were sent to investigate the new mansions by Professor E Gadd. However, due to King Boo shattering the Dark Moon keeping the ghosts docile, he had the ghost imprison the helpless Toads in paintings. Luigi finds out that he can use his flashlight to color the paintings, causing the Toads to fall out of them in the flesh again. What follows is an escort mission, in which Luigi has to protect Toad from the ghosts, while simultaneously using Toad as ammunition for his Poltergust to solve puzzles. Since Toad can't swim, Luigi has to carry him through any larger bodies of water they encounter. When the two happen to find a stationairy teleporter, Luigi figures that it makes more sense for E Gadd to teleport Toad to his lab first and fetch Luigi when his work is done later. Luigi has to save four other Toads in the next three mansions, repeating the escort missions until the teleporter is found. At the end of the game, the five Toad assistants present the pieces of the Dark Moon, with the main Toad handing his piece to Luigi so he could have the honor of restoring it. The Toads then join Luigi, Mario, E Gadd and the pacified ghosts for a photo.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, three Toads join Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach on vacation in a new hotel. The owner Hellen Gravely then separates the group by escorting them to their rooms. However, when Luigi is awoken by strange noises, he finds the hotel in a state of disrepair and is pursued by King Boo holding paintings depicting all five of his friends. Luigi narrowly escapes through the vent, meeting E Gadd in the basement, asking him for help. Yet again, it's up to Luigi to find the paintings and turn his friends back to life, but when saving Toad this time, E Gadd reports that Toad got lost when trying to recover an upgrade for Luigi. Luigi goes to rescue him, which leads to another escort mission of having to prevent the ghosts from snatching Toad back until Luigi manages to get him back to E Gadd, being rewarded with the upgrade when he succeeds. However, at the end of the game, King Boo had captured everyone yet again, but Luigi manages to slip away and save them.
