Canon[]

Lute with Adam after abandoning Vaggie in Hell
Lute is Adam’s right-hand loyal lieutenant and subordinate in the exorcist army who takes over his role after the finale and his subsequent death. It is unknown when they met or how their relationship devolved before the series. However, in the Pilot, two exorcists are seen next to each other, resembling Adam and Lute. At some point, Adam and Lute were acquainted with Vaggie in the army, whom they would later abandon in Hell heartlessly during one of the yearly exterminations. While Vaggie's past is revealed in the sixth episode, when Lute rips out the latter's wings and eye, she is seen handing Vaggie's halo to Adam. She then walks away with him, leaving Vaggie in Hell.
As his subordinate, Lute was always by Adam’s side, portrayed with an exceptionally comedic and friendly dynamic. They share the same views and goals, both enjoying their status as Exorcists and detesting the concept that Angels can make mistakes, with a highly bigoted view towards sinners. They are both cruel and sadistic, finding enjoyment in killing demons and gladly stranding Vaggie in Hell together after the latter spared a single child. Lute joins Adam in his antics and dramatic moments but makes sure to balance out his recklessness. While taking Adam’s immature self seriously, she appears very indifferent and unbothered by his arrogance and exaggerated insults and over-the-top behavior, although she is shown to scold Adam when he is being careless, reminding him of the seriousness of their duties.
However, they are rather opposite in demeanor, as Lute is highly stoic and hardly shows emotion while Adam is excessively expressive and rather a loud-mouth. With contrasting personalities, Adam displays a more childish and carefree approach and is often the one to engage in conversations or fights, while Lute is very responsible and chiding. Lute finds Charlie and Vaggie’s relationship as blasphemous and openly expresses how she looks down upon it, while Adam agrees but finds it “hot as fuck.” Despite this, outside of work they are shown hanging out together, which suggests they get along as friends, with Adam complimenting her kill count and jokingly calling her “Danger Tits.” Lute follows Adam’s orders at all times as a subordinate and shows a strong loyalty, respectfully calling Adam by "Sir". However, Lute desperately calls Adam by his name while he dies.
They are portrayed as the antagonistic duo of the first season, demeaning Charlie together and refuting all her ideas. Lute is always by Adam’s side and would follow him in all his endeavors to shut down Charlie, mutually supporting each other in song.
Overture[]
In the first episode, Lute wordlessly stands by Adam who mocks Charlie amusedly for a while long. Lute adds in snide remarks supporting Adam’s argument throughout the exchange, and their shared view of Angels’ perfection are revealed. Even while Adam makes a ridiculous statement of how he’s the “Dickmaster” and childishly laughs at pranking Charlie, Lute nods in agreement sternly. During the meeting, Adam asks Lute about her kill count, to which she responds with her number of 275, making Adam praise her work and fist-bump her.
Later, Adam and Lute glance at each other in disbelief as Charlie starts to sing. To this, Adam interrupts and begins to sing “Hell Is Forever.” Lute joins Adam pointing at him fervently during his “guitar solo" and fending off Charlie. At the end, they fist-bump each other before they kick out Charlie and announce that they're coming back in 6 months, a shortened date. At the end, Lute angrily argues to Adam they should move the extermination date higher after revealing the sinners managed to kill an exorcist. However, Adam assures Lute that they’ll kill every sinner by then.
Welcome to Heaven[]

Lute shushes Adam
In the sixth episode, Adam and Lute are walking together in the streets of Heaven. Adam is sipping a drink and Lute has her mask off, and they both are stuck in disbelief seeing Charlie stride by. Adam recklessly declares he’ll handle the situation before Lute pushes him back, grabbing his collar and shushing him before changing his mind. Right after, Adam groans and begrudgingly agrees, but not without sarcastically calling her a bitch and telling her not to shush him. Later, Sera appears and suggests Adam to listen to his lieutenant, making him glance back at Lute.
Later, Adam and Lute break into Vaggie’s room to threaten her. Adam chastises and mocks Vaggie while Lute sternly stands beside. Lute angrily declares Charlie and Vaggie’s love as blasphemous, making Adam add, “Hot as fuck though.” which doesn't bother her. They leave the room after the confrontation and reveal of Vaggie’s past as an Exorcist with Adam and Lute.

Adam poses behind Lute as they refute Charlie
Afterwards, Adam and Lute smugly sit next to each other at the court. Adam makes many crude remarks while Lute watches unaffected. Later, she grins at Adam refuting all of Charlie’s arguments. As “You Didn’t Know” starts, Lute cuts in to sing and insult Angel Dust, making Adam pose behind her vigorously and posing while she continues to sing. They break into a duet, a reprise of “Hell Is Forever”, and later Lute hangs behind Adam to add onto his remarks. Later, upon Adam's prompting, Lute drags Vaggie to the front to reveal her angel identity.
The Show Must Go On[]
- NOOOOO!! Sir! Sir! Stay with me, sir! Adam!
- —Lute's pained reaction to seeing Adam dying
Adam and Lute plan the next extermination. Together, Lute stands next to Adam who vigorously lectures the army, and Lute continually adds onto Adam's statement and eventually gets overly excited, screaming to rip Vaggie's "𝔠𝔲𝔫𝔱 mouth out of her ass", making Adam stare in shock and tell her to calm down, looking confused. Later as the army descends and Charlie's forces fight back, the duo fly together while Lute observes the Hazbin Hotel's shield and alerts Adam of it. Adam sarcastically yells saying he hasn't noticed it, making her deadpan in irritation. Adam and Lute are separated as the battle progresses as Lute violently jumps to fight Vaggie, while Adam is elsewhere. Lute loses her arm, Adam's mask is half shattered - Lucifer mistakenly says he's going to fuck Adam, so the whole cast of the Exorcists and the hotel stares quizzically, and Lute is no exception, as she looks the most concerned, as she even stops her battle with Vaggie to gape.
Later as the battle comes to a draw, where Adam is brutally stabbed by Niffty, Lute lifts her head up to spot this sight of Adam bloodied on the ground, as she screams in agony. She quickly sprints to him and shakes him, begging for him to stay, repeatedly calling him by sir until she yells out his name. Lute is shown to have tears streaming down her cheeks as she displays her concern and heartbreak. To this, Adam gives a soft smile, either greatly moved or at the least amused by her care. When ordered to leave, Lute gazes down angrily, complying and grabbing Adam's fallen halo before she orders all forces to retreat.

Lute throws Adam's halo to the ground
After the battle and the Hotel being rebuilt, various sequences ensue showcasing the aftermath of the final battle. At the end of the episode, Lilith is revealed as Lute approaches her. Lute throws Adam's halo at her feet, confronting her fervently. Lute announces Adam's death, angrily explaining what Charlie's actions resulted in.

Fanon[]
GuitarSpear is considered a popular and mainstream ship in the fandom where it is common for fans to jokingly reference romance between the two or treat the ship as canon. The pairing quickly became a popular ship, platonic or romantic, ever since Adam and Lute's debut. From the very start, fans found their dynamic very entertaining as a classic goofball boss x the serious and responsible assistant and an example of partners in crime. Their shared sadistic, ruthless and even maddening views of sinners proved an interesting plot point due to their similarly bigoted viewpoints. Both Adam and Lute being scumbags together was a reason for fans shipping them, similar to a partners in crime situation. Popular headcanons or interpretations include Lute’s loyalty to Adam being love, and Adam being overly clingy and affectionate towards Lute. Many fan works portray Lute as a tsundere towards Adam while the latter gets flustered easily, while Lute either plays into it or doesn’t notice. Fans play into a sort of tragic romance after Adam’s death.
With the release of the finale, Lute’s shocking tearful reaction to Adam’s death startled fans and increased the popularity for GuitarSpear. Likewise, Adam's caring smile for Lute shown as he died was extremely popular, as a common theory surfacing is that Adam realized Lute was the only one who stayed by his side until the end, compared to his ex-wives, which also sparked many fan works of the parallels. Another theory is that Lute is actually Eve. Fans also joke about how they were excited to see Adam die, only to be struck with regret after Lute’s reaction. Additionally, fans wondered how deep their relationship was for the egotistical Adam to smile that fondly and the merciless and cruel Lute to cry over his death. Hell is Forever is also considered GuitarSpear’s song, due to the reprise they sing of it during You Didn’t Know.
The most popular guess from fans is that Adam will be reincarnated as a sinner demon in Hell in the second season, and it is guessed by fans that Lute will be distraught to see Adam become one of the things they worked against together.
There are very few rival ships other than AdamsApple. Most discourse surrounding GuitarSpear comes from some fans who claim that Lute may be Adam’s descendant and that the exorcists were all created by Adam, claiming the ship incestuous.
Most shippers see GuitarSpear as a sort of platonic soulmates situation, where the pairing is equally appreciated as a platonic and romantic relationship. There are many fans who see their relationship as a sibling bond or Adam being Lute’s mentor/father figure. However, shippers have noted that their relationship seems to portray more of a romance and it has been discussed whether Adam and Lute’s relationship was meant to indicate a romance. GuitarSpear is sometimes shipped alongside other mainstream pairings such as StaticMoth and Chaggie.
On AO3, there are currently 240+ romantic works and 230+ gen works.
